I won't pay more on a TV Stand than the TV

This blog entry's subject line was a quote from a friend in a recent conversation. My friend, lets just call him D, is considering to buy a new flat panel TV and retiring his 27" tube that he purchased 9 years ago. Considering HDTVs are more affordable than ever, I'd say his patience has paid off big time. With 42" 1080P LCD and Plasmas costing $700 or less, he is very tempted.

With young children in his household, he wants to be very cautious with the new TV setup. For one, he doesn't want his boy to pull that new TV down if left on a basic stand. Mounting on the wall is out of question to avoid any wall damage that his landlord would not like. So we start to research for a stand w/ built-in mounting wall with some nice aesthetics. We found some units like this one and this one.

As cost of technology deflates, flat panel TVs are becoming so affordable. Its likely a household can start to purchase multiple units. Flat panels are space saving and somewhat energy efficient. But to keep up that streamline look, one must pay a good chunk of change for a nice looking TV furniture. Its amazing how the furniture business have not deflated much over the years so one potentially has to budget more on the stand. Sometimes, depend on the TV price, your TV Stand budget may take up 50% or more of the total spend. Crazy!

BTW, if you were to look into some serious stands, my buddy Mike told me about BDI and Bello.

Avoiding memory leaks

Android applications are, at least on the T-Mobile G1, limited to 16 MB of heap. It's both a lot of memory for a phone and yet very little for what some developers want to achieve. Even if you do not plan on using all of this memory, you should use as little as possible to let other applications run without getting them killed. The more applications Android can keep in memory, the faster it will be for the user to switch between his apps. As part of my job, I ran into memory leaks issues in Android applications and they are most of the time due to the same mistake: keeping a long-lived reference to a Context.

On Android, a Context is used for many operations but mostly to load and access resources. This is why all the widgets receive a Context parameter in their constructor. In a regular Android application, you usually have two kinds of Context, Activity and Application. It's usually the first one that the developer passes to classes and methods that need a Context:

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle state) {
super.onCreate(state);

TextView label = new TextView(this);
label.setText("Leaks are bad");

setContentView(label);
}

This means that views have a reference to the entire activity and therefore to anything your activity is holding onto; usually the entire View hierarchy and all its resources. Therefore, if you leak the Context ("leak" meaning you keep a reference to it thus preventing the GC from collecting it), you leak a lot of memory. Leaking an entire activity can be really easy if you're not careful.

When the screen orientation changes the system will, by default, destroy the current activity and create a new one while preserving its state. In doing so, Android will reload the application's UI from the resources. Now imagine you wrote an application with a large bitmap that you don't want to load on every rotation. The easiest way to keep it around and not having to reload it on every rotation is to keep in a static field:

private static Drawable sBackground;

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle state) {
super.onCreate(state);

TextView label = new TextView(this);
label.setText("Leaks are bad");

if (sBackground == null) {
sBackground = getDrawable(R.drawable.large_bitmap);
}
label.setBackgroundDrawable(sBackground);

setContentView(label);
}

This code is very fast and also very wrong; it leaks the first activity created upon the first screen orientation change. When a Drawable is attached to a view, the view is set as a callback on the drawable. In the code snippet above, this means the drawable has a reference to the TextView which itself has a reference to the activity (the Context) which in turns has references to pretty much anything (depending on your code.)

This example is one of the simplest cases of leaking the Context and you can see how we worked around it in the Home screen's source code (look for the unbindDrawables() method) by setting the stored drawables' callbacks to null when the activity is destroyed. Interestingly enough, there are cases where you can create a chain of leaked contexts, and they are bad. They make you run out of memory rather quickly.

There are two easy ways to avoid context-related memory leaks. The most obvious one is to avoid escaping the context outside of its own scope. The example above showed the case of a static reference but inner classes and their implicit reference to the outer class can be equally dangerous. The second solution is to use the Application context. This context will live as long as your application is alive and does not depend on the activities life cycle. If you plan on keeping long-lived objects that need a context, remember the application object. You can obtain it easily by calling Context.getApplicationContext() or Activity.getApplication().

In summary, to avoid context-related memory leaks, remember the following:

  • Do not keep long-lived references to a context-activity (a reference to an activity should have the same life cycle as the activity itself)

  • Try using the context-application instead of a context-activity

  • Avoid non-static inner classes in an activity if you don't control their life cycle, use a static inner class and make a weak reference to the activity inside. The solution to this issue is to use a static inner class with a WeakReference to the outer class, as done in ViewRoot and its W inner class for instance

  • A garbage collector is not an insurance against memory leaks

Mount a filesystem read-write

Very often when you want to write files to a particular partition on ADP1, you will get a "Permission Denied" if the partition is mounted read-only.
To get around this, you need to mount the partition read-write. Typically this is done with /system partition

$ adb shell
$ su
$ mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

(Replace /dev/block/mtdblock3 & /system with appropriate device path and mount point, as obtained from cat /proc/mounts)

Android Dev Phone 1 Button Combinations

The following are the ADP1 / G1 button combinations for booting in various modes.

Regular mode: Power button

Fastboot mode: Power on with Camera + Power button. Wait until Android on skateboard image appears with text "SERIAL0", and press Back button. It'll enter FASTBOOT mode.

Alternatively, Power + Back button takes you directly to fastboot mode

Recovery mode: Power on with Home + Power button.
In recovery mode,
Alt + L - toggle log text display
Alt + s - apply sdcard:update.zip
Alt + W - wipe data/factory reset

Safe mode: Power + Menu button

The 3-button salute (Call + Menu + Hangup) causes a reboot in any of the above modes.

Using ADP1 without sim card

You know that Android Dev Phone 1 is fully unlocked.  But if you've just opened your box and don't have a sim with a working data plan, you'll be greeted with a "No sim card" "Emergency dial" screen on first boot. Now, if you had a sim card with a working data plan, it'd allow you to go ahead and and sign in with your Google account, but you don't. So you cannot do anything at the "No sim card" screen.

There's a workaround, however. You can use wifi to setup your account. It requires you to use the adb tool available from the android sdk.
  • Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable. You should be able to see a listing for your device if you run adb devices. Then execute the following commands.
  • adb shell
  • $ su
  • $ cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
  • $ sqlite3 settings.db
  • INSERT INTO system (name, value) VALUES ('device_provisioned', 1);
  • .exit
  • $ reboot
After reboot:
  • $ adb shell
  • am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.settings/.Settings
Go ahead and setup your wifi and then sign up using your Google account.

http://code.google.com/android/download.html

This includes many important tools, most notably adb - android debug bridge, which allows me to run all kinds of commands on the device directly from my computer, ie without typing on the device. It also eliminates the need to run telnet or ssh server on the device.

News flash: Microsoft lied

"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!" --Claude Rains, Casablanca

I'm a little late in getting to this item, but I recently came across James Plamondon's online confession that he lied while working as a technology evangelist for Microsoft (link). Actually, "lied" is probably the wrong word. James systematically misled and manipulated software developers, and enthusiastically taught others at Microsoft how to do the same. Some samples from his work there:

Working behind the scenes to orchestrate "independent" praise of our technology, and damnation of the enemy's, is a key evangelism function... "Independent" analyst's report should be issued, praising your technology and damning the competitors (or ignoring them). "Independent" consultants should write columns and articles, give conference presentations and moderate stacked panels, all on our behalf (and setting them up as experts in the new technology, available for just $200/hour). "Independent" academic sources should be cultivated and quoted (and research money granted). "Independent" courseware providers should start profiting from their early involvement in our technology....

Analysts sell out - that's their business model. But they are very concerned that they never look like they are selling out, so that makes them very prickly to work with....

The key to stacking a panel is being able to choose the moderator. Most conference organizers allow the moderator to select the panel, so if you can pick the moderator, you win. Since you can't expect representatives of our competitors to speak on your behalf, you have to get the moderator to agree to having only "independent ISVs" on the panel....Sounds marvelously independent doesn't it? In fact, it allows us to stack the panel with ISVs that back our cause....

Get a well-known consultant on your side early, but don't let him publish anything blatantly pro-Microsoft. Then, get him to propose himself to the conference organizers as a moderator, whenever a panel opportunity comes up. Since he's well-known, but apparently independent, he'll be accepted....

A Jihad is a road trip. in which an evangelist visits a large number of ISVs one-on-one to convince them to take some specific action. The classic Jihad is one focused on getting Tier A ISVs to commit to supporting a given technology by signing the technology's Letter of Agreement...As in sales, the purpose of the exercise is to close – to get the mark the ISV to sign on the dotted line, in pen, irrevocably.

The Role of ISVs
* Pawns in the struggle....
* Valuable pawns
o We can't win without 'em
o Must take good care of them
* Can't let 'em feel like pawns
o Treat them with respect (as you use them)

Developer Conferences....
* Subvert independent conferences
o Love them to death

Developer Magazines
* Same as developer conferences
* Infiltrate and subvert

You can see the details here. Be sure to skim the comments at the bottom. They're a hoot.

Speaking as someone who led the competitive teams at Apple and Palm for many years, I guess I ought to get worked up about this stuff. But mostly I think it's just old and tired. The whole "Microsoft is evil" theme is kind of pathetic these days, like the trial of an 85-year-old mobster. Yeah, I know, they deserve everything that Google's doing to them. Let's move on.

It's also not really news that a lot of analysts and conferences are on the take. For the record, you should always understand who's paying the bills when any "authority" talks.

I'm usually not moved by someone who apologizes only after being exposed in court and abandoned by his employer (link). But I'll take James at his word that he's trying to make amends.

Apology accepted, James.

That doesn't mean, though, that I agree with his prescription on what the industry should do about the situation. James says the best way to prevent a recurrence of Microsoft's misdeeds is to set professional standards for evangelism:

Microsoft...is this week launching its first public volley in the Mother of All Standards Battles, to control the de facto standards of cloud computing. For Microsoft, this is a life-or-death struggle. When Microsoft's back is to the wall, can it reasonably be expected to refrain from using the TE tactics that it KNOWS will help it win, if its use of those tactics is unrestrained?.... This problem can only be treated, I believe, by professionalizing TE, and thereby inoculating platform vendors against unethical TE practices. That's why I felt compelled to come forward now. Only now have I realized how wrong I was, and by coming forward now, in the opening skirmishes of the Cloud Computing Wars, I can begin to make amends for my past wrong-doing.

James is even writing a book on what he thinks those professional standards should be. That ought to be an interesting read. Maybe Amazon could do a two-for-one offer with the Martha Stewart Guide to Ethical Investing.

But I think the real problem isn't missing standards, it's missing morality. I believe James was able to thrive at Microsoft because the company's hypercompetitive culture condoned dishonesty, as long as you didn't get caught in public. Everybody in the industry believed they worked that way. I think the problem wasn't just in Microsoft's evangelism, it also included the company's marketing, business development, and so on.

Unfortunately, they're not the only company in the tech industry that thinks that way.

The real cure here is not to read a book or professionalize anything. Just take a course in business ethics. Or better yet, save your money and memorize this rule:

Never mislead a customer or partner.

And if an appeal to morality isn't enough to move you, keep in mind that even the cleverest liars eventually get outed. Just ask James Plamondon.

(By the way, James, if you really want to make amends, how about sending the royalties from your book to the stockholders of the companies you damaged or destroyed?)
