The world’s most powerful smartphone packs the power and capabilities of a PC in your pocket through Motorola’s revolutionary webtop
LAS VEGAS – CES — Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI), and AT&T unveiled Motorola ATRIX™ 4G, the only smartphone that allows you to carry the power of mobile computing inside your pocket. Motorola’s revolutionary webtop application changes mobile computing forever by unleashing the power of the smartphone like never before. Designed to bring unprecedented computing to your smartphone, Motorola’s webtop application runs a full Mozilla Firefox 3.6 browser and supports Adobe® Flash® Player to open up all the rich graphics, animations and video on the web. Motorola ATRIX 4G includes a dual core processor with each core running at 1 GHz, delivering up to two GHz of processing power. Put simply, Motorola ATRIX 4G is the world’s most powerful smartphone.
“Consumers are increasingly using smartphones as their primary digital screens,” said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer, Motorola Mobility, Inc. “Motorola ATRIX 4G ushers in a new era of mobile computing. ATRIX comes loaded with the Motorola webtop application, and when used with one of our exclusive docks, enables consumers to extend the capabilities of their smartphones. Together, these provide a revolutionary interactive computing experience that empowers individuals in new ways for staying connected, informed and entertained at home, on the job and anywhere in between.”
"With ATRIX 4G, we are rethinking what a smartphone can be, and literally changing the game with a new device category that combines the power of a laptop with the latest smartphone features and 4G speeds," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T mobility and consumer markets. "With Motorola Mobility, we're delivering on our commitment to provide customers with the best mobile broadband experience and best smartphones."
Motorola ATRIX 4G is designed to essentially become a user’s primary digital hub to create, edit and interact with documents, media and content. This is facilitated by Motorola’s webtop application and incredible new accessory docks, such as the Laptop Dock, that provide users with a larger screen, keyboard and trackpad enabling them to have an enhanced and more interactive computer-like experience with their devices.
While in the webtop application users can run their Android applications in a window, browse their favorite websites with a full Firefox desktop browser, send instant messages and make phone calls, all at the same time. Calls continue uninterrupted if Motorola ATRIX 4G is removed from a dock. Users can take advantage of the ability to surf the web, view social networking, and use HTML5 web-based applications and supported cloud computing services. Plus, the new Entertainment Center feature lets you show all of the photos, music and videos you already enjoy on-the-go on a big screen in your living room. In the U.S., ATRIX 4G will feature the AT&T U-verse® Mobile application, which allows users to schedule recordings, and for qualifying TV customers, download and watch hit TV shows on their smartphones.
Motorola ATRIX 4G provides consumers with instantaneous access to all their emails, files and media. While using the webtop application, business users with an existing Citrix account will benefit from the integrated Citrix Receiver application that provides secure, high performance access to virtual desktops as well as Windows®, web and office applications hosted on Citrix XenDesktop. In addition to the full suite of office productivity applications and email applications, users can also access a great number of web applications such as Salesforce.com, Google Docs, and any HTML application or service from the full desktop browser.
Motorola ATRIX 4G runs Android™ 2.2 with access to more than 100,000 apps and games in the Android Market™.
Motorola is introducing two industry-leading companion docks for ATRIX 4G:
The Motorola HD Multimedia Dock has three USB ports and an HDMI port enabling connections to a keyboard, mouse, speakers and HDMI-compatible monitor for working at your desk/office, or connecting to an HDMI-compatible television and home theater audio system for interacting with content and enjoying video, music, games and more in your living room.
The Motorola Laptop Dock has an incredibly thin design with an 11.6-inch screen, full keyboard, stereo speakers, 36Wh three-cell battery that delivers up to eight hours of battery life and weighs just 2.4 pounds. Users simply dock their Motorola ATRIX 4G into the back of the Laptop Dock to turn it into an active, connected machine to experience true mobility at work, home and playing on-the-go in a form factor that’s lighter and smaller than most laptops on the market.

AT&T Deploys Next-Generation Services for Windsor West Apartment Residents
Through New Agreement, AT&T Will Deliver AT&T U-verse TV, U-verse High Speed Internet and U-verse Voice Services to Champaign, Illinois Apartment Complex.
Bringing residents cutting-edge services over a fiber-to-the-unit network, AT&T* and Regency Apartments announced a new agreement that will deliver AT&T U-verse® TV, U-verse High Speed Internet and U-verse Voice to the 316 units at Windsor West Apartments in Champaign, Ill. This agreement marks one of the first Illinois communities to receive AT&T's next-generation services over fiber directly to the apartment unit.
Located at 2502 Fields South Drive in southwest Champaign, Windsor West is a newly constructed apartment community offering one, two and three bedroom floor plans. The complex overlooks a five-acre lake, and each unit is equipped with environmentally-friendly features including geothermal heating and cooling, energy-efficient windows and doors and more.
“We are excited to announce that we're delivering AT&T's cutting-edge services to Windsor West residents through one of the first fiber-to-the-unit network builds in Illinois,” said David Fine, vice president and general manager, AT&T Illinois and Wisconsin. “For customers, this means seamless access to our triple-play services from the moment they move in.”
This agreement with Regency Consolidated Residential, LLC is part of the AT&T Connected Communities® program — a strategic marketing initiative between AT&T and regional or national single-family builders, developers, real estate investment trusts, apartment ownership and management groups, and home owners' associations to provide next-generation communications and entertainment solutions to residents and homebuyers.
"This announcement is great news for Champaign. When I supported the state's Video Reform Law, I knew it would help bring consumers more choices for TV and video," said state senator Mike Frerichs. "Today's announcement from AT&T once again demonstrates that this public policy is working as more consumers are getting what they want: more choices and competition. This is the next generation of communications and I couldn't be more pleased AT&T is bringing it to Champaign."
“We're pleased to offer AT&T's advanced communications and entertainment services to our residents at Windsor West,” said Bob Pratten, president and CEO of Regency. “Together with AT&T, we're anticipating the needs of our residents even before they move in to bring them a suite of the latest offerings in technology to meet their lifestyle needs.”
AT&T U-verse brings together your TV, broadband, digital home phone and wireless services — all on one bill — with unique features that provide a new level of integration, convenience and control. AT&T U-verse offers multiple combinations of TV, Internet and Voice packages to customize your experience.
U-verse TV customers can enjoy numerous TV benefits, including the ability to manage your home recordings, and download and watch hit TV shows from your qualifying smartphone with U-verse Mobile; the freedom to watch and manage recordings from a single DVR on any connected TV in the home with U-verse Total Home DVR; the ability to choose and watch up to four of your favorite channels at one time with the exclusive My Multiview app; an extensive High Definition (HD) channel lineup with access to 130 HD channels; the ability to program DVR recordings from their Web-connected mobile phone or PC; personalized, on-screen weather, sports, traffic and stock information via AT&T U-bar; and more.
With AT&T U-verse Voice, customers receive unmatched calling features that provide deeper integration across their bundle of services. For example, customers have a single, combined voice mailbox for convenient access to their AT&T U-verse Voice and AT&T wireless messages. They can also view their call logs on their PC or their TV screen, and initiate a call from their PC or TV.
AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet offers faster available speeds. All U-verse Internet customers receive a wireless access point with their installation, so Windsor West residents will be able to connect Wi-Fi enabled devices to their home broadband connection.

AT&T Ready for Hurricane Earl
Offers Communications Tips for Consumers and Businesses.
AT&T* announced it stands ready for the impact of Hurricane Earl, as it passes North Carolina, with an arsenal of disaster response equipment and personnel that enable a quick response post landfall. To help local consumers and businesses prepare, AT&T is also providing important communications tips for use before, during and after the storm.
AT&T has invested more than $500 million in its Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) organization since it was formed. The NDR function includes more than 300 technology and support trailers that AT&T is able to deploy quickly to respond to disaster situations such as severe hurricanes. AT&T invested $145 million in recovery and restoration efforts related to the 2008 hurricanes that included the opening of a third NDR equipment warehouse in the Southeast.
A critical element of AT&T's efforts to maximize network reliability is its ability to respond swiftly when disaster strikes, made possible by extensive preparations. These include: ongoing readiness drills, topping off fuel at generators positioned at cell sites and switching centers, testing high-capacity back-up batteries, distributing additional extended battery life and portable generators, using natural gas in a portion of permanent generators to eliminate need for refueling, adding capacity to the wireless network as able, and staging of additional emergency response equipment in strategic locations near the anticipated landfall area.
AT&T continues to enhance network redundancy in hurricane-prone areas. These efforts include installation of more back-up and permanent generators at critical cell sites and switching facilities, location of critical equipment to less vulnerable areas, upgrade of electronics in many locations, replacement of copper wiring with fiber optic cable, elevation of switches critical to network operations above expected flood levels and protection of physical facilities against flooding.
AT&T offers the following recommendations for consumers and small business owners before and after the storm hits:
Consumer Tips:
Be sure you have a “hurricane phone.” It's a good idea to have a wireless phone on hand and at least one corded (landline) telephone that is not dependent on electricity in case of a power outage. Cordless telephones usually have receivers that are electronically charged, so they won't work if you lose your power.
Have a family communications plan in place. Designate someone out of the area as a central contact, and make certain that all family members know who to contact if they become separated. Most important, practice your emergency plans in advance.
Program all of your emergency contact numbers and e-mail addresses into your mobile phone. Numbers should include the police department, fire station and hospital, as well as your family members.
Keep your wireless phone batteries charged at all times. Have an alternative plan to recharge your battery in case of a power outage, such as charging your wireless device by using your car charger or having extra mobile phone batteries or disposable mobile phone batteries on hand.
Keep your wireless phone dry. The biggest threat to your device during a hurricane is water, so keep your equipment safe from the elements by storing it in a plastic bag or some other type of protective covering.
Forward your home number to your wireless number in the event of an evacuation. Because call forwarding is based out of the telephone central office, you will get incoming calls from your landline phone even if your local telephone service is disrupted at your home. In the unlikely event that the central office is not operational, services such as voicemail, call forwarding, remote access call forwarding and call forwarding busy line/don't answer may be useful.
Track the storm and access weather information on your wireless device. Many homes lose power during severe weather. If you have a wireless device that provides access to the Internet, you can watch weather reports through AT&T Mobile TV or keep updated with local radar and severe weather alerts through My-Cast® Weather, if you subscribe to those services.
Camera phones provide assistance. If you have a camera phone, take, store and send photos — and even video clips — of damaged property to your insurance company from your device.
Take advantage of location-based mapping technology. Services such as AT&T Navigator and AT&T FamilyMap can help you seek evacuation routes or avoid traffic congestion from downed trees or power lines, as well as track a family member's wireless device in case you get separated.
Small Business Tips:
Set up a call-forwarding service to a predetermined backup location. Set up a single or multiple hotline number(s) for employees, employees' families, customers and partners, as appropriate, to call so that all parties know about the business situation and emergency plan. For this to be most effective, maintain an updated contact list, including mobile and home phone numbers and e-mail addresses, for all employees.
Protect hardware/software/data records/employee records, etc. Routinely back up these files to an off-site location. Use a generator for supplying backup power to vital computer hardware and other mission-critical equipment. Prearrange the replacement of damaged hardware with vendors to ensure quick business recovery.
Outline detailed plans for evacuation and shelter-in-place plans. Practice these plans (employee training, etc.). Establish a backup location for your business and meeting place for all employees.
Assemble a crisis-management team and coordinate efforts with neighboring businesses and building management. Be aware that disasters affecting your suppliers also affect your business. Outline a plan for supply chain continuity for business essentials.
Maximizing Service During and After a Hurricane:
During an emergency, many people are trying to use their phones at the same time. The increased calling volume may create network congestion, leading to “fast busy” signals on your wireless phone or a slow dial tone on your landline phone. If this happens, hang up, wait several seconds and then try the call again. This allows your original call data to clear the network before you try again.
Try text messaging. During an emergency situation, text messages may go through more quickly than voice calls because they require fewer network resources. All of AT&T's wireless devices are text messaging capable. Depending on your data or text plan, additional charges may apply.
Keep non-emergency calls to a minimum, and limit your calls to the most important ones. If there is severe weather, chances are many people will be attempting to place calls to loved ones, friends and business associates.

AT&T U-verse TV Customers Denied a Fair Deal by Hallmark
AT&T U-verse® TV customers have been denied a fair deal for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel programming by Crown Media. AT&T* issued the following statement to update its customers:
“We are very disappointed that Hallmark has refused to provide AT&T and its customers with a fair deal — one that is no worse than similarly-sized and smaller providers — and refused to adhere to key obligations under our current deal. We offered to extend the current deal while talks continued, and Hallmark rejected that offer. Hallmark has forced us into a position where we no longer have the rights to carry the Hallmark channels as of 12:01 EDT. We don't want customers to lose their programming, but we believe strongly that our customers should not have to pay more than their fair share for Hallmark's channels, which is exactly what Hallmark is demanding.”
In the place of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, AT&T U-verse customers will be able to enjoy a free preview of the popular family programming from Starz Kids & Family on channel 176 and Turner Classic Movies on channels 794/1794. And since several of Hallmark's programs are available on other U-verse channels, customers will be able to find these programs using the U-verse Search feature, by hitting “Menu” on their U-verse remote and selecting “Live TV” and then “Search.”
U-verse TV customers can get more information at att.com/fighting4you or can call Hallmark at 1-877-677-6385.

More details, plus a new color, on the AT&T Motorola Flipout
We brought you the first pictures of the AT&T version of the Motorola Flipout, and now it's time to drop off a truckload of info on the device. Let's do so in handy bullet form, shall we?
* The phone runs the updated version of Motoblur 1.5 -- but it's not what you find on the Droid X and Droid 2.
* The operating system is Android 2.1 (update1, we presume).
* Widgets are resizeable, like on the Droid X and Droid 2.
* There are filtering options for your social networks, so you're not completely deluged with information.
* The 2.8-inch screen (at the old-school 320x240 resolution) is described as "garbage" with a low, low 120 pixels per inch. (Hey, it's not mean to be high-end.)
* That said, the body of the phone and build quality are said to be top-notch, which is no surprise for Motorola. We may not like the design, but, dammit, they can certainly build things well.
* Benchmarks: 26FPS on nenamark, 444 on quadrant, 5.8MFlops on linpack, but it's topping out on gears and 2dfps at 30FPS.
* The phone is pretty speedy, with its OMAP processor running at 720MHz and PowerVR SGX 530 GPU.
* This is AT&T we're talking about, so there is no app sideloading, but like the Backflip and Aria and Captivate, you can use ADB or the Android Sideload Wonder Machine to install the .apk files.
* Google Navigation is in, and Google is the default search,
unlike on the Backflip. Yahoo is the homepage, but that is changed easily
enough.
So there you go, folks. We're looking at a small, speedy, pocketable Android phone.

AT&T Teams With Location-Based Game SCVNGR To Help Launch Samsung Captivate
A few weeks ago, location-based game SCVNGR launched a new feature called Rewards that makes it an increasing threat to the likes of shopkick, Foursquare, and every other company looking to combine the power of coupons and deals with location. The premise is simple: complete SCVNGR challenges to earn points, which you can in turn redeem for rewards at select merchants like Journeys. And today SCVNGR is adding a key new partner to its Rewards program: AT&T.
Over 50 AT&T stores across the midwest will be promoting SCVNGR as part of the launch of the new Samsung Captivate. AT&T will be using SCVNGR to offer three rewards: if you earn two SCVNGR points, you’ll get a free giftcard for a ring tone. Earn five points and you get 20% off accessories. And, in an especially compelling offer, if you earn 15 points at a store you get $50 off the phone — not too shabby. The deal is currently only running in the midwest, but SCVNGR CEO Seth Priebatsch sounds optimistic about AT&T pursuing a wider deployment depending on how this goes. Oh, and SCVNGR is getting paid for the AT&T deal, though Priebatsch unsurprisingly wouldn’t get into specifics.
Unlike check-ins on Foursquare and Facebook Places, which aren’t especially engaging, SCVNGR revolves around more interactive challenges. For example, one challenge might ask you to take a goofy photo of a friend holding his new Android phone at the AT&T store. Other challenges include the recently-launched social check-in, which entails getting a few friends to tap their phones together to ‘check-in’ at the same place.
Each of these actions earns points, which can be used toward SCVNGR rewards. Once you’ve earned enough points to redeem a reward, SCVNGR displays a screen on your phone instructing the cashier on how to give you your discount (this is more straightforward than having to print out a separate coupon).
Priebatsch says that one interesting observation the company has seen since the launch of Rewards involves the distinction between coupons and rewards. He explains that many retailers aren’t particularly found of coupons, because they can cheapen the value of a given item in the buyer’s mind (he says the term “race to the bottom” frequently comes up in this context). Rewards, on the other hand — where the buyer needs to complete some tasks before they’re given access to the discount — don’t have that effect, because the buyer feels like they had to earn it, even if the net effect is the same at the cash register.
Partnerships like the AT&T deal are important for SCVNGR, because the war over location looks like it will increasingly be fought through deals, rewards, and other partnerships. The basic act of checking into a venue is becoming commoditized, especially with the launch of Facebook Places and services like SimpleGeo — now startups are going to be adding additional layers like rich gameplay to attract more eyeballs and more businesses.

Dell Aero Android Smartphone Arrives on ATandT
Dell introduced the Android-running Aero smartphone, calling it its first U.S. smartphone — a designation that puts the Streak in clear tablet terms. With an AT&T contract, the Aero is just $99.99.
The Dell Aero is now available on the AT&T network, Dell announced Aug. 24. The smartphone, which Dell is calling its first in the United States, runs version 1.5 of Google’s Android mobile operating system, also known as “Cupcake.” It’s priced at $100 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $300, via the Dell Website without a contract.
The launch of the Aero follows the Aug. 13 debut of the Dell Streak — a “hybrid” device that in size and pricing is something of a large smartphone or a small tablet. The Streak is also available on the AT&T network, or unlocked at an unsubsidized price. With the Aero, however, there’s no second-guessing — it’s a smartphone all the way.
“The Dell Aero is built with a focus on style and performance to help people find new ways to connect with friends and express themselves socially, supported by the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network,” Ron Garriques, president of Dell Communications Solutions, said in a statement.
Long and lean, the Aero measures 4.8 by 0.46 by 2.28 inches and weighs just 3.67 ounces. By comparison, the Streak measures 6 by 0.4 by 3 inches and measures 7.7 ounces, and the Apple iPhone (still the measuring stick for all smartphones) is 4.5 by 0.37 by 2.31 inches and weighs 4.8 ounces. It features a 3.5-inch multitouch display (same size as the iPhone) with pinch-to-zoom functionality and a resolution of 640 by 360 pixels. (Last comparison: the iPhone display, notably, is 960 by 640 pixels.)
Staying focused on the Aero, Dell has packed in the features usually arriving on phones at twice the price. The 3G-running Aero supports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100MHz) networks. There’s also WiFi connectivity — users going for the AT&T contract will receive “free” access to the carrier’s 20,000-plus hotspots — as well as Bluetooth, GPS and assisted GPS.
Dell has included its own user interface on top of Android, and the Aero ships with Quick Office, Facebook, Twitter and a number of Google applications already installed. Facebook and other social-networking apps are additionally accessible with a single tap.
The Aero also comes with a 5-megapixel camera with 8-times zoom, flash, a dedicated camera key, and shooting and editing capabilities. Also on board are a 2GB microSD card expandable to 32GB and support for Adobe Flashlite, a full HTML browser, POP, IMAP and Webmail email accounts, and Microsoft Active Sync Email.
Dell was recently rumored to also have a smartphone called the "Thunder" in the works. While also long and lean and running Android, Engadget reported that the Thunder features a 4.1-inch display and an 8-megapixel camera.
Like rising smartphone giant HTC, Dell appears to have placed its smartphone bets with Android OS, which has proven to be the fastest-growing OS in the country. Dell’s Mini 3 smartphone — the very first phone offering from the Texas PC maker — was introduced in November 2009 and debuted on Brazil’s Claro network and in China on China Mobile.
Dell has not yet shared sales figures for the Streak, and during a conference call to announce revenue for its fiscal 2011 second quarter, executives kept the focus primarily on the company’s commercial business, offering little more than to express that it expects the tablet market to grow, and that there’s major buzz connected with Android.
“Certainly there’s a lot of excitement around Android,” CEO Michael Dell said during the call, “and we’re participating in that.”
EDITOR'S NOTE: The text has been corrected to reflect that the Aero runs Android 1.5, not 1.6.

AT&T Statement on Hallmark Programming Agreement
Despite Crown Media's unreasonable and inflexible demands, AT&T* is working to keep Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel on AT&T U-verse® TV at a fair price for its customers. AT&T's existing contract with Crown Media expires at 12:01 a.m. EST Sept. 1. AT&T has provided the following statement to update customers on its programming negotiations with Hallmark:
We are making every effort to reach a fair agreement and continue providing these channels to our customers. Frankly, we're surprised that Hallmark has decided to take its negotiations public, instead of working with us in good faith, especially since we've made numerous offers to Hallmark. We're disappointed that Hallmark is acting in a way that may punish viewers and is trying to charge AT&T more than what similarly-sized and smaller TV competitors pay for these channels. We want to continue to carry the channels under terms similar to our current agreement.
We don't want customers to lose their programming. We're fighting for a fair deal because our customers deserve the programming they want, at a fair price. We want to reach an agreement that is fair to our subscribers and for all parties, as we have with numerous other content providers.
U-verse TV customers can get more information at att.com/fighting4you or can call Hallmark at 1-877-677-6385.

"Voice" Becomes application on Enterprise VPN.
AT&T* announced that new and existing virtual private network (VPN) customers may add VoIP service to the network solution delivered over AT&T's global network cloud.
This converged solution will enable customers to consolidate their separate voice and data networks, reduce equipment and maintenance costs, and simplify migrating these complimentary capabilities to a common, secure infrastructure. By migrating to a common infrastructure, customers are able to take advantage of additional applications as AT&T makes them available, such as unified communications capabilities.
The AT&T VoIP portfolio is also certified for interoperability with leading industry providers of IP-PBX systems, such as SIP Trunking services qualified for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2, providing support for businesses planning to incorporate a comprehensive unified communications solution in the future.
AT&T VoIP portfolio is also certified for interoperability with leading industry providers of IP-PBX systems, including Microsoft, providing support for businesses planning to incorporate a comprehensive unified communications solution in the future.
The company's portfolio of VoIP services includes AT&T IP Flexible Reach, a SIP trunking service, which allows businesses to continue to use the capabilities of their existing IP-PBXs, optimizing their equipment investment. AT&T Voice DNA®, another product in the VoIP portfolio, is a fully hosted network-based service with advanced features, applications and management tools for customers.
VoIP calling plans include unlimited local and “on-net” long-distance calling, as well as “off-net” long distance international calling, and provide the local calling features customers have come to expect such as: caller ID, voice mail, conferencing, local number portability and E911. Customers are able to monitor and manage their network through AT&T BusinessDirect®, an award-winning Web-based suite of secure, interactive tools which allows customers to perform a multitude of functions from network monitoring and performance optimization, to customer service and bill management.
“Voice service is as mission-critical for businesses today as it's ever been, and customers expect their VoIP service to perform as well as their traditional telephone service,” said Shawn Conroy, vice president, AT&T Business Solutions. Adding voice to the network cloud gives customers the ability to determine their optimal level of security, architecture, cost and performance objectives -- key differentiators for AT&T,” he said.
Business customers want a single network and platform to deliver voice, data, video and applications to their end-users. VPNs are quickly becoming the strategic platform to deliver on the goal of a networked enterprise -- anytime, anywhere, reliable, and highly secure networking. With AT&T's VPN portfolio, businesses can use a single infrastructure (their VPN network) to connect branch offices, headquarters, remote users, and third parties such as suppliers and customers.
Remote workers and road warriors have the same functionality as their co-workers in the company's headquarters or branch-based co-workers through the VPN network. They have seamless access to business functions, applications and intelligence, including customer service to order processing, procurement, and now, voice services, over a single network, including the same voice mail and the corporate dialing plans,
AT&T customers can access their VPN using virtually any access technology, such as mobile, Wi-Fi, DSL, dial-up and Ethernet.
AT&T's innovative IP network is the lynchpin to delivering a comprehensive set of solutions necessary for enterprises to operate in today's global environment. AT&T delivers unmatched scale, reach and reliability over a converged, global MPLS network. Through both science and discipline, AT&T uses data and analytics from call handling, routing, congestion and performance to detect and manage services proactively for optimized availability. This intelligence is coupled with specific routing capabilities that are layered on top of basic IP routing to provide quality of service and improved performance for customers.
Today, AT&T offers Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based services to 163 countries over 3,800 service nodes, and operates 38 Internet data centers around the world. AT&T Enlists SunEdison to Add 2MW of Solar Power in California by 2011
Trade Street site in San Diego, first of 6 California based solar power installations to be activated.
AT&T* and SunEdison announced that SunEdison, a leading worldwide solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE: WFR), will expand AT&T's national solar initiative by activating a new roof top solar power installation in San Diego. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders as well as executives from AT&T and SunEdison were on hand to officially flip the switch on the solar power system. In addition to this installation in San Diego, AT&T has contracts with SunEdison to deploy five other solar power installations in California by the second quarter of 2011, equating to approximately 2 megawatts (MW) of total solar capacity for all six sites. The additional California solar deployments will be located in Dunnigan, Commerce, Mojave, Santa Ana and West Sacramento.
The solar power installation in San Diego is a 296 kW rooftop mounted photovoltaic system that will generate an estimated 420,000 kWh of energy in its first year of operation alone. Over 20 years, the power installation will generate more than 7.7 million kWh of energy – enough energy to power more than 720 US homes for one year. The environmental attributes associated with the solar power installation will avoid more than 8 million pounds of carbon dioxide during the initial 20 years of operation – the equivalent of taking more than 800 cars off the road according to SunEdison projections.
“Partnerships such as this one between AT&T and SunEdison show why San Diego continues to be the national leader in solar energy,” said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. “Our residents and businesses have embraced clean energy, which not only benefits our environment, but also our region's economy.”
The program is made possible through a strategic power purchase agreement (PPA) between SunEdison and AT&T under which SunEdison will construct, monitor and maintain an additional five solar power installations in California. In return, AT&T will buy the energy produced from the solar systems to offset their grid demand. Once activated, the six systems will total an estimated 2 megawatts of solar capacity and will generate over 3.2 million kWh of energy within the first year of operation. According to SunEdison projections, the environmental attributes associated with the six systems will avoid an estimated 62 million pounds of CO2 over 20 years of operation.
“We are continually seeking opportunities to add renewable energy resources to power our business operations, and this agreement provides more sustainable solutions for our energy needs in California,” said John Schinter, director of energy, AT&T.
"SunEdison makes solar a reality for commercial clients throughout the world," said Brian Jacolick, general manager, Americas for SunEdison. “Through smart design, proven technologies and our strong financing capabilities, SunEdison helps clients like AT&T realize the benefits solar energy offers. “
AT&T recently released its 2009 Citizenship and Sustainability Report highlighting the company's progress toward up to $865 million in multi-year commitments for important education, environmental and volunteerism programs that help strengthen communities and stimulate economic growth.
