Ultimate Portable Entertainment System Makes Its Debut This Year,
Further Expanding the PlayStation® Business in the Portable Gaming Market
Tokyo – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience. NGP will make its debut at the end of the year 2011.
NGP is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation®. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by leveraging SCE's experience from both PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3®) entertainment systems.
Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStation's DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to "encounter," "connect," "discover," "share" and "play" with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.
・Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface
NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" moves of the fingers.
・Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks
While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users' hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.
・LiveArea™
Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called "LiveArea™" where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation®Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an "Activity" log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users.
・Near
SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilizing PlayStation Network. The new application called "Near," developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance.
・New Game Medium
NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.
NGP will also come equipped with two cameras on its front and rear, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy the world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.
PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android™ based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.
SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

Common chargers are on the way
You may well have seen news
emerge of a new standard for a Common Charger for mobile phones with which major players in the phone manufacturing business have agreed to make their new devices compliant. That includes Nokia, of course. If it isn’t already obvious, click through to find out why this is good news for you, the industry and the environment.
Following the recent publication of charging standards, the new chargers will use the micro-USB connector – already in use for the data connection in many smartphones.
The majority of current Nokia devices already support micro USB based charging, going forward this will be the industry standard. In addition Nokia’s standard 2mm charger will continue to be supported, so standard Nokia chargers will still be useable as well.
This is good news in three ways:
- It makes life easier. You won’t need to buy a new charger for your new device, hunt through your drawer of old chargers or hope that someone in the office has the same brand of phone when you need a top-up away from home.
- The waste and environmental impact created by old, discarded chargers that no longer work when you change manufacturer for your new device, will be eliminated.
- Environmental impact may be reduced by the ability to sell phones without chargers (a development currently being piloted by Nokia to gauge customer reaction).
Do not forget, old unneeded chargers can be brought to one of the 50,000 Nokia Recycling Points – where they can be completely recycled to make new components.
This is all good news, of course, and eminently sensible. What’s your view?
There’s a video introducing the initiative here. Update: Since we published this post, the European Commission has launched an entire website about the development. Head over to OneChargerforAll.eu for more information.
Footnote;
A memorandum of understanding – indicating their intention to adopt the new standard – was signed by Nokia was in June 2009 and to date 13 other companies including Apple, Emblaze Mobile, Huawei Technologies, LGE, Motorola, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion (RIM), Samsung, SonyEricsson, TCT Mobile (ALCATEL mobile phones), Texas Instruments and Atmel.

Computing industry leaders form Asia Cloud Computing Association to drive regional adoption, security, and policy
Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, EMC Corporation, Microsoft, NetApp, Nokia Siemens Networks, PLDT/Smart, Rackspace, REACH, Telenor, and Verizon, today announced they have formed Asia Cloud Computing Association (Asia Cloud), an open collaboration forum based in the Asia Pacific region.
The non-profit, vendor-neutral organization will address regional issues and challenges to adoption of cloud computing in Asia including privacy and security concerns, compliance and regulatory mandates, licensing models, service levels, and other market risks.
The research firm IDC estimates that the market for cloud computing in Asia outside Japan will grow to around US$1.3 billion this year and will continue to expand at a rate of approximately 40 percent a year until 2014 (Source: IDC, 2010), whereas in Japan, currently the second largest IT market globally, the cloud computing market is expected to grow to US$29.2 billion in 2015 (Source: Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry 2010). However, security concerns, data storage regulations, low penetration of bandwidth in some countries, and government policies oriented to traditional computing models are inhibiting market growth.
“Cloud adoption in the Asia Pacific region has yet to reach its full potential. The regulatory landscape and varying market maturity levels have fragmented the adoption of cloud computing in the region,” noted Asia Cloud chairman and REACH chief information officer, Sundi Balu. “Organizations in Asia have voiced several concerns, particularly around security, service levels, and regulatory positions. There is a strong sense of urgency to have these concerns resolved by an open industry collaboration focused on the actual market realities and conditions in Asia. With Asia Cloud as a platform, key stakeholders can collaborate on issues specific to Asia and enable faster and more efficient adoption of cloud computing.”
The organization will evaluate global cloud standards produced by other industry associations and determine which can be adapted or advocated regionally. Initial working groups include those for public policy and regulatory issues, security, taxonomy, and carrier-grade applications. Anticipated deliverables for 2011 include best practices, a cloud-readiness index, development of a taxonomy, and the establishment of formal relationships with other organizations in cloud computing.
“Cloud computing will play a fundamental role in re-shaping how telecommunications service providers offer applications to end users and how their internal systems are implemented,” said Mike Murphy, initiator of the Carrier-Grade Cloud Computing Working Group and head of Technology APAC, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Asia Cloud Computing Association is a great vehicle for industry leaders to direct that re-shaping in a consistent manner.”
Asia Cloud welcomes computing service, hardware, and software providers, end users, and government/policy, research/academic organizations to join the effort. More information about Asia Cloud and a membership prospectus are available at www.asiacloud.org.

Operators can now crowdsource data on mobile broadband quality
Nokia Siemens Networks launches ‘Mobile Quality Analyzer for Mobile Broadband’
Operators can now get real-time data on connectivity bottlenecks in their networks to improve service quality and their customers’ experience. Nokia Siemens Networks has launched a Mobile Quality Analyzer (MQA) for Mobile Broadband that uses a mobile device client to report on the quality of 3G connections. It can combine this data with subjective feedback from subscribers, as they download data or surf the Internet, to get a clearer picture of their mobile broadband experience, effectively ‘crowdsourcing’* mobile network optimization. The application is part of the company’s Insight & Experience Framework**.
"The mobile broadband market is growing rapidly and improved broadband service quality is fast becoming a differentiator for operators globally," said Ludovic Magne, customer operations for business solutions sales at Nokia Siemens Networks. "MQA for Mobile Broadband provides operators with information to plan and efficiently adjust their network capacity as well as speed up resolution of customer complaints."
The application is one of the most cost effective systems to measure mobile broadband performance. Nokia Siemens Networks recommends that operators clearly outline to subscribers the client application’s use, exactly what sort of data it collects and how their privacy is protected. Take-up rate could be improved by offering bonuses such as additional SMS and voice minutes or data allowances to those who accept its use. MQA for Mobile Broadband can also provide real-time insight into device and network operation to customer service agents helping them accurately troubleshoot and resolve user issues.
MQA for Mobile Broadband consists of a client-server architecture based on technology from Ciqual. The measurement client can be downloaded by subscribers to their laptops, netbooks or notebooks with external or embedded 3G Modems. The client app evaluates signal strength in the cell and measures if broadband throughput rates are sufficient for the online services being accessed. The results are then sent to a measurement server for real-time display and analysis.
To complete the active tests that measure connectivity quality, MQA for Mobile Broadband can also periodically present an optional, brief questionnaire to assess the user’s personal experience. The client-software can be used without affecting price plans or causing tangible effects on speed of the broadband connection or even battery life.
In addition to the software solution, Nokia Siemens Network provides Server Hosting, Consultancy Reporting, Detailed Network Performance and End User Experience Analysis Services using Mobile Quality Analyzer for Mobile Broadband. Each of these service solutions is customized according to customer needs.
About Ciqual
Ciqual delivers technology which helps Mobile Operators to improve the services delivered to end-users through actual knowledge of the customer experience. Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ciqual is a privately held, venture-backed company with offices in the UK and Australia.

Motorola Acquires Aloqa GmbH
Acquisition to Enhance MOTOBLURTM with Context-Aware Mobile Platform and Related Services.
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that it has acquired Aloqa GmbH, a privately-held, leading developer of location-based software and technologies that are designed to enable the discovery of relevant web content by mobile smartphone users. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Aloqa has joined Motorola Mobility, which is comprised of Motorola’s Mobile Devices and Home businesses. Motorola Mobility is expected to be spun off from Motorola, Inc. in the first quarter of 2011.
Aloqa’s technologies and services utilize the user’s context (location, identity and social relationships) to proactively inform them of places, events, bargains and other opportunities of which they may choose to take advantage. For example, if Aloqa’s software recognizes the user is in a certain region, it will offer him the top events of the day or special offers of leading discounters in the vicinity. Aloqa distributes its product as a mobile application for smartphone platforms, including Android, and more than one million users have already downloaded its software.
Aloqa will further enhance Motorola’s MOTOBLURTM, which delivers customized content to mobile device homescreens and allows users to access Facebook™, MySpace and Twitter updates -- along with emails, news and favorite apps and widgets -- all in one place. MOTOBLURTM will integrate Aloqa’s open, location-triggered mobile push platform to connect users and publishers of location-aware content in real-time.
“Aloqa is an exciting addition to Motorola Mobility as its specialized engineering talent and location-tracking technology will significantly accelerate the release of our context-aware mobile services platform,” said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services product management for Motorola Mobility. “Aloqa’s core technologies, user database, and specialized skills are a strong fit with our planned server-side context delivery architecture and will further enhance Motorola’s MOTOBLURTM capabilities. We welcome Aloqa’s highly skilled personnel to the Motorola Mobility team.”
"We are proud that a global mobile giant like Motorola chose the Aloqa platform as a core part of its future in location technologies. Like every startup, we have always dreamed of our technology and product being used by tens of millions of satisfied users everywhere. Being a part of the Motorola Mobility team will help us achieve this goal," said Sanjeev Agrawal, chief executive officer of Aloqa.
