One year of compression technology shows the need for browsing speed.
Results from the first year of the compression technology Opera Turbo show a universal demand from users for increased browsing speeds at lower costs.
More than 5.2 million users turbo charged their browsing in August, with more than one in 10 of Opera’s 50 million monthly desktop users activating Opera Turbo to unclog a slow Internet connection.
In the past year, Opera Turbo users have browsed 25.8 billion compressed pages in total, letting Opera Turbo do the heavy-lifting by serving more than 1697 terabytes of compressed data. In that time, Opera Turbo’s total compression has spared users data equal to the printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress 191 times over, or 319 times the entire contents of Wikipedia.
Released in September last year as part of Opera 10 for PC/Mac/Linux, Opera Turbo is a unique compression technology that rescues users from the frustration of slow connections. If users are stuck on a dial-up connection, rely on 3G cards in their netbooks or get crowded out in a busy Wi-Fi area, activating Opera Turbo gives a browsing boost by reducing the size of webpages by up to 80 percent. This means faster surfing and lower browsing costs.
The top 20 countries taking advantage of faster surfing with Opera Turbo are (in order): Russian Federation, Ukraine, India, Germany, Indonesia, Poland, China, United States, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, France, Czech Republic, Iran, Slovakia, Romania and Spain.
These country results demonstrate that Opera Turbo works for anyone bound by a slow connection and that users across the globe are united by the goal to save time and money when browsing.
“Prior to the launch of Opera Turbo, we expected that this technology would be adopted first and foremost by those with dial-up connections and limited broadband,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “We are delighted to see Opera Turbo helping users to power-up in a wide variety of countries for a wide variety of needs. It is rewarding to celebrate the anniversary of Opera Turbo with such significant speed gains and cost savings for users across the globe.”
Countries in focus
We spoke to the Opera community to find out how people from the top 20 user countries are taking advantage of Opera Turbo.
Topping the list of Opera Turbo devotees is Russia. Russia has approximately 26 percent broadband penetration (according to AC&M, H1-2010), with territories outside Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities experiencing slower connection speeds. Smaller cities and business travelers access the Web through 3G USB modems, for GPRS/EDGE/3G connection to the Internet via mobile networks. Most Internet users have pre-paid traffic limits and must pay by megabyte beyond this limit; with Opera Turbo, both city and regional users get more data per megabyte and save money.
2G networks are predominant in India, and 3G has only recently become available in certain regions. As in Russia, India has solid broadband speeds in larger cities and workplaces, but speed suffers when Internet users rely on datacards for traveling to other areas. “I use Opera Turbo due to the unreliable broadband connections in India,” said user Abinash Bishoyi. “I use it as my proxy service, to compress unnecessary web media and save a lot of bandwidth.”
What Opera fans say
Stefan, software developer, Germany: “I use Opera Turbo on my netbook. When no Wi-Fi network is around I use the 3G modem and Opera Turbo allows me to save money and make the best of the slow connection.”
‘airiRin’, Indonesia: “I use Opera Turbo because my connection speed will go down from 1 mbps to 128 kbps after 3GB of usage. Opera Turbo is really essential when I pass the limit, and makes me feel like I have a 512 kbps connection speed when browsing.”
Ryan, student, United States: “The Wi-Fi at my college is a joke, but Opera Turbo bumps the dial-up connection speed to DSL levels and it makes it usable. It’s very handy!”
Daniel, student, United Kingdom: “When I get stuck on a slow connection, with Opera Turbo I can look smug while everyone else grinds to a halt.”
Mağruf, logistics manager, Turkey: “While on holiday last week with no Internet connection, I needed to connect to my company to check email and other work. I used my phone as a modem to connect. With a quota of just 150 megabytes, I enabled Opera Turbo... I surfed three times faster, and at the end of the holiday still had 60 megabytes to spare.”
The Opera Turbo report, published bi-monthly, provides information on the leading global trends generated by Opera Turbo users. The report for August was released today, available from www.opera.com/otr/ (English only). In addition to country snapshots, the report highlights issues affecting turbo browsing around the world.
What is Opera Turbo?
Opera Turbo is a unique compression technology available in both Opera 10 and Opera Mobile. Opera Turbo reduces the size of webpages by up to 80 percent, dramatically improving browsing speeds over slow networks and saving money on “pay as you go” connections. To activate Opera Turbo, simply click the Opera Turbo speedometer icon in the lower, left-hand corner of the Opera 10 browser. Then sit back and surf the Web at turbo speeds.

Opera and MMH to provide web-based TV content solutions
Opera Software and NetRange MMH reveal an easier way for device manufacturers to give consumers a wide variety of content on their connected TVs and set-top boxes. Opera and NetRange MMH have announced a partnership to deliver the Opera Devices SDK and a pre-qualified suite of web-based TV content to be deployed on TV platforms supporting HbbTV and other pan-European initiatives.
This partnership allows Opera and MMH to package a system to OEMs and partners who seek an expansive portfolio of content, with the shortest time-to-market for new connected TVs.
MMH provides a ready-made portal solution including UI design, portal architecture, backend solution, hosting and portal operations for letting the end customer access content on various platforms, including HbbTV-based platforms.
HbbTV merges the two worlds--Internet content and traditional TV broadcast content--on one platform, the family TV. This means end users will have easier access to the content they choose. Content suppliers, on the other side, will have the opportunity of delivering content directly to users via Internet-based channels and applications.
“Having a complete package for OEMs to deliver new TV models and STBs quickly to market gives the manufacturers an advantage early in the process,” says Opera’s Chief Development Officer, Christen Krogh. “We are often approached by TV manufacturers who would like to package their new connected TVs or STBs with more content. With an out-of-the-box portal from MMH containing hundreds of applications qualified to run on the Opera browser, Opera will be able to deliver a complete web content solution for OEMs. It is simply one less step in the process to worry about.”
Standards are the driving force behind the quick and easy integration of MMHs portal on Opera-powered connected TVs and set-top boxes from tier-1 suppliers and OEMs. By adhering to standards from W3C, HbbTV and CEA-2014, the MMH portal solution fits effortlessly on to the Opera platform for connected TVs.
“This proves that standards make different providers work together in a more creative manner,” says Jan Wendt, CEO, MMH. “The two parts of the connected TV ecosystem work together seamlessly and provides end users with the best possible experience on their TVs. This is key to meeting the rising demand for connected TVs. MMH is proud to partner with an industry leader like Opera.”
Opera will show a demonstration of the solution at IBC in Amsterdam, at stand 4 A95 in hall 4.

Content is King
Opera launches CDK for Connected TVs and set-top boxes.
Opera Software has just lowered the threshold for TV content development by unveiling the Opera Devices Content Development Kit (CDK) at the IBC Show in Amsterdam today. The Opera Devices CDK is now available for download from http://dev.opera.com/sdk/.
An important asset to Opera customers and partners, the Opera Devices CDK will now allow any web developer to create content for TVs and other Internet-powered devices, without requiring access to the physical device. Developing HTML5 and HbbTV-enabled content will now be a breeze on the PC platform, rather than the device itself, and debugging will become easy with Opera Dragonfly — the world’s most powerful debugger — which comes as part of the package.
The Opera Devices CDK can be installed on any standard Linux PC and will empower OEMs, content developers, content service providers and Opera partners to create and debug portals, applications, widgets and webpages for TVs and other Opera-powered devices.
OEMs and operators can also use the Opera Devices CDK as a “reference platform”, so, once they develop for one device, they can ensure it works on any device that runs Opera’s widely-used browsers. Opera Devices CDK supports the latest W3C, HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV), OIPF, and CEA-2014 specifications unlocking a new dimension for content developers who can write content for all standards and deploy on Opera TVs anywhere.
“Until now, developers did not have a simple way to create applications for TV,” said Frode Hernes, VP Products, TV and Connected Devices, Opera Software. “With Opera Devices CDK, they can now bring reliable, fine-tuned applications to market much more quickly. Opera has always been on the forefront of innovation. The Opera Devices CDK comes at an optimal time when demand is high and will only grow for TV Apps and other Internet-connected devices.”
Opera Devices CDK provides the following content:
* Supports all features of the Opera Devices SDK
* HTML/CSS/JavaScript/DOM
* SVG, Canvas
* W3C Widgets
* HTML5

The HTML5 revolution will be televised
HTML5 video comes to connected devices with new Opera Devices SDK.
Opera Software released Opera Devices SDK 2.8. Designed for television and other consumer electronics manufacturers, the new software development kit (SDK) features support for HTML5 video and includes Opera’s newest and fastest JavaScript engine, Carakan.
Connected device manufacturers benefit from Opera’s versatility. Opera Devices SDK 2.8 makes it easy to embed a web browser and utilize the full power of the browser engine. Using the SDK, manufacturers can create immersive, yet adaptable, user interfaces and can offer a complete multiscreen web-application and widget experience.
“Today, manufacturers are creating a new generation of connected devices,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Rather than the traditional ‘lean-back’ model of TV interaction, today’s ‘lean-forward’ devices engage the consumer with interactive content and downloadable widgets and applications. Opera’s newest Opera Devices SDK allows manufacturers to build all of those new revolutionary experiences on top of the browser engine. There is no solution that offers the same combination of control, ease of integration, and time-to-market as the Opera Devices SDK.”
The Opera Devices SDK update includes the same rendering engine, Opera Presto 2.6, found in Opera 10.62, the company’s industry-leading desktop browser. Additional features include:
* Four times the JavaScript execution speed with the new Carakan JavaScript engine
* Integration with Opera’s new Content Development Kit
* Improved support for HbbTV and application delivery over broadcast streams
* A new API to integrate native, hardware-accelerated video codecs, offering a substantial improvement in time-to-market

Giving the freedom to choose
Opera Mobile is on Toshiba’s Android-based “Folio 100”.
Opera Software today announced that its browser has been selected to be preinstalled on Toshiba’s Android-based tablet computer “Folio 100”, which will be available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa during the fourth quarter of 2010. Users will now have the option to select the browser they want to use, either Opera Mobile or Android’s default browser. The Folio 100 will be available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa only.
Tablets are attracting a lot of attention all over the world, and the market has become highly competitive. Having high-speed Internet functionality on devices is the key to offering a great user experience. Brazil sings the Opera Mini tune
Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile browser, is now available on more than 60 mobile phone models in Brazil through a partnership with TIM — one of Brazil’s leading carriers. Dubbed as “Navegador TIM,” the co-branded application will be available either as a free download or will be preinstalled on phones used by TIM subscribers.
As part of the Infinity Web promotion, TIM is now offering prepaid subscribers unlimited Internet access on their phones for browsing through the co-branded “Navegador TIM” browser for just R$0.50 a day. For postpaid subscribers, TIM will offer the Liberty Web promotion, a free subscription to unlimited data for six months when a customer buys a handset equipped for mobile Internet, followed by a nominal charge of R$28 a month. This wide distribution of Opera Mini browsers is part of TIM’s big push in Brazil to get its subscribers to access the mobile Web on their phones as opposed to cybercafes — a popular way for Brazilians to access the Internet.
“We are very happy that TIM has chosen Opera Mini to be part of this large rollout of its mobile Internet strategy,” said Roy Satterthwaite, Senior VP, Americas, Opera Software. “Opera Mini’s unique features coupled with TIM’s competitive pricing will allow Brazilians to have the power of the Internet at their fingertips while on the move — at rates much lower than cybercafes.”
Opera Mini is the closest experience to desktop surfing on the mobile phone, used by more than 60 million people the world over. The latest version, Opera Mini 5, offers innovative features such as Speed Dial, bookmarks, tabbed browsing and password manager. Apart from its user- friendly features, Opera Mini also gives users a fast browsing experience through its compression technology, which shrinks webpages by up to 90 percent before they are delivered on the mobile device.
To install Opera Mini, subscribers need to visit the TIM mobile portal at m.tim.com.br and download “Navegador TIM”, which is one of the featured apps. The data plans from TIM will also work on the public and co-branded Opera Mini versions that are available for download from www.opera.com.
“One third of Brazilians access the Internet from cybercafes. We want to change that and give the power of the mobile Internet to our users through Opera Mini,” said Rogerio Takayanagi, Marketing Director, TIM. “Our pricing is the best in the market and so are the applications we offer our subscribers, including Opera Mini.”
Opera’s association with TIM is not new. In 2009, TIM sold two devices that came with the preinstalled version of Opera Mini. In August 2010, Opera Mini users in Brazil increased by 278% compared to the same period in 2009. Also during July 2010, Opera Mini page views in Brazil increased 350% compared to the same period the previous year.
About TIM
Eleven years ago in Brazil, TIM became the first mobile operator to be present in all the country’s states. With a consumer-focused approach and seeking to meet market demands as effectively as possible, the company saw its client base leap from 36.1 million to 41.5 million between March 2009 and January 2010, representing a growth of over 14% and which can be attributed to its brand repositioning strategy. Its improved performance is a reflection of the concern with the user and launch of innovative and customized products and services, such as the Infinity and Liberty plans.
In December 2009, TIM acquired 100% of Intelig, including its own infrastructure with an extensive transportation network (backbone of 14,500 kilometers) and metropolitan networks in 15 capitals. Among other benefits, this infrastructure will allow TIM to accelerate the expansion of its 3G network, reduce operating costs such as with the rental of circuits and enter new voice and data markets, both residential as well as corporate.
TIM also invests in its commitment to society: included in the BM&FBOVESPA Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) portfolio, the company maintains collection and forwarding actions for the recycling of devices, batteries and accessories, and also sells devices with a low environmental impact, among other initiatives. Women flock to the mobile Web
New Opera State of the Mobile Web Report showcases greater gender equality.
In just two years, the number of women on the mobile Web has risen 575%, according to Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report, published today. South Africa leads the world’s push for gender equality on the mobile Web, with women accounting for nearly 44% of mobile web users.
Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report, published monthly, provides information on the top global trends affecting the mobile Web. The full report is available from http://www.opera.com/smw/ (English only). This month’s report includes the first results from a survey of more than 300,000 Opera Mini users, as well as a snapshot of mobile web trends in Southeast Asia.
Opera Mini demographics
Starting in late July and running over the course of several weeks, we conducted a survey to learn more about Opera Mini users around the world. In addition to collecting user demographic data for this report, the survey sought to quantify various aspects of their online/mobile lifestyle. Those lifestyle issues will be discussed in future reports, but one relevant question is discussed below as a special preview.
Methodology
The survey, displayed to Opera Mini users on their handsets, was deployed in 9 languages (Russian, English, Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, German, Polish and Japanese). Every Opera Mini user in those languages was offered the survey. Data was collected from users in 15 listed countries, as well as “other”. The data below is from the top 10 countries according to Opera Mini usage (as of June 2010).
As of 8/10/2010, over 300,000 survey responses were collected.
Highlights
* Using data from the top 10 countries, we estimated the global ratio of male to female mobile Web users to be 77% (male) to 23% (female). Two years ago, the ratio we reported was 88% (male) to 12% (female). While male users still clearly outnumber female users, females on the mobile Web are increasing at a faster rate — catching up to their male counterparts. Between May 2008 and July 2010, we estimate that the number of male users increased by 233%, while the number of female users increased by 575%. Looked at another way, the percentage of female users nearly doubled (from 12% to 23%) in that time period. This seems to indicate a trend towards greater gender equality when it comes to mobile Web browsing.
* South Africa has the most female users (43.5%), followed by the United States (35.6%), Russia (32.4%) and the United Kingdom (31.5%).
* India has the fewest female users (4.0%), followed by Nigeria (5.4%), China (11.6%) and Vietnam (17.9%).
* Compared to the last time we surveyed Opera Mini users, some significant changes were observed. In Russia, the percentage of female users increased from 12.5% to 32.4%. In China, the percentage of female users increased from 5.5% to 11.6%. In the United States, the percentage of female users increased from 19.4% to 35.6%. In South Africa, the percentage of female users increased from 24.7% to 43.5%. In Ukraine, the percentage of female users increased from 8.5% to 24.2%. In the United Kingdom, the percentage of female users increased from 16.6% to 31.5%.
* Ukraine and Vietnam have the most users under 18 (34.8% and 23.7%, respectively).
* Across the board, 18-27 is still the biggest age group of Opera Mini users. That said, when looking at the previous survey results, one will notice that the under-18 user base in the United States and the United Kingdom grew (proportionally) at the expense of the 18-27 group.
* The United States and the United Kingdom have a lot of users who are 38 and older (26% and 21%, respectively).
Lifestyle question
Users were asked “Do you have online friends you’ve never met in real life?”
In general, “yes” responses for this question were relatively common (the lowest rate of “yes” responses was 64.6% of respondents in the United Kingdom), indicating that mobile Internet users tend toward having online friends they have not met in person.
On the high end (more “yes” responses): Nigeria (87.3%), Indonesia (83.7%), and Ukraine (83.1%)
On the low end (fewer “yes” responses): United Kingdom (64.6%), United States (65.6%)
Global trends
* In July 2010, Opera Mini had over 62.3 million users, a 4.8% increase from June 2010. Since July 2009, the number of unique users has increased 114.3%
* Those 62.3 million active users viewed over 29.6 billion pages in July 2010. Since June, page views have gone up 8.5%. Since July 2009, page views have increased 146.3%.
* In July 2010, Opera Mini users generated over 445 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since June, the data consumed went up by 6.9%. Data in Opera Mini is compressed by up to 90%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed over 4.1 petabytes of data in July. Since July 2009, data traffic is up 138.1%.
* Kenya joins the list of top 10 countries for Opera Mini users, replacing Nigeria. The current top 10, in order, is: Indonesia, Russia, India, China, Ukraine, South Africa, the United States, Vietnam, the United Kingdom and Kenya.
Southeast Asia trends
* The top 10 countries using Opera Mini in Southeast Asia are Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
* Some numbers: From July 2009 to July 2010, page views in the top 10 countries in Southeast Asia increased by 238%, unique users increased by 205%, and the amount of data transferred increased by 227%
* Growth rates in Southeast Asia: Malaysia and Singapore lead the top 10 countries of the region in terms of page-view growth (1,003.7% and 412.0%, respectively). Vietnam and Malaysia lead the top 10 countries of the region in growth of unique users (328.5% and 242.3%, respectively). Brunei leads the top 10 countries of the region in page views per user, with each user browsing 1,824 pages on average each month.
* Google and Facebook compete for the top spot in several Southeast Asian countries. In Thailand and Laos, Google is #1, followed by hi5 and then Facebook. In Vietnam, where My Opera is very popular, Facebook is not in the top 10 list at all.
* Opera Mini users in Southeast Asia tend to prefer Nokia handsets. That said, the Apple iPhone is the most popular handset used by Opera Mini users in both Singapore and Myanmar.
What we say
“We believe access to the Web is a universal right and the mobile Web is all about breaking down barriers to access,” said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder, Opera Software. “Seeing more women on the mobile Web is important to ensuring the mobile Web remains the rich tapestry of ideas it is. Further diversity can only improve things for everyone.”

Telenor and Opera to co-operate on mobile Internet growth worldwide
The Telenor Group and Opera Software announce a non–exclusive Global Frame Agreement aiming to stimulate rapid growth of mobile Internet services across Telenor’s business units. Telenor’s business units can co-brand, distribute and run the Opera Mini mobile browser across its mobile handset and subscriber portfolios. As a result, Telenor’s customers in all geographies will be able to enjoy a fast, affordable and user-friendly mobile web experience on their favourite handset.
Under the agreement, Opera Software and any of Telenor Group’s business units may develop a co-branded version of Opera Mini that is adapted to the local operator. Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile phone browser with 60 million monthly users.

“Telenor has a vision to provide mobile Internet with a great user experience to everyone. We are confident that this agreement will help us provide Internet to a larger user group across the world,” says Morten Karlsen Sørby, EVP and Head of Corporate Development, Telenor Group. “We are thrilled to work closely with Opera, a company that spun out of Telenor in the late 1990s, and have grown to become one of Norway’s most successful technology exports.”
“Our goal is simple: help Telenor grow its user base and revenues by delivering an unparalleled Internet experience to every local operator in the Telenor network. Telenor’s strong global position is a result of their relentless commitment to the customer, in markets as diverse as Sweden, Russia, Bangladesh and Hungary,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, in Opera. “We are proud of our heritage from Telenor’s research labs. Opera.com welcomes Vietnamese speakers
Users in Vietnam can now enjoy browsing the Opera.com website in Vietnamese and get easier access to downloads.
Starting today, all Opera.com visitors who have Vietnamese set as their browser language will be automatically redirected to the native language site ( vn.opera.com ).
With new languages constantly being added to the Opera portfolio, Vietnamese enjoys an elevated status as a Tier 1 language. The Tier 1 status ensures a commitment from Opera to make its browsers as well as website available to Vietnamese speakers. This is a joint effort by Opera and members of the fast-expanding Vietnamese Opera community who assisted Opera employees in the process.
“Reaching out to emerging markets and welcoming them in the native language is key to providing an attractive service for our 130 million users,” says Opera Co-founder, Jon von Tetzchner. “Providing our increasing Vietnamese user base with a native language option will ease the information flow and download process.”
Opera has increased its reach in Vietnam in last the year with the popular Opera Mini browser , which works well with low-end phones. Providing the Vietnamese user group with native language tools to get access to Opera's browser family is the next logical step for expansion in Southeast Asia. Opera 10.61 for desktop and Opera Mini are both available in Vietnamese. The Opera Mini mobile web browser has proven popular in Vietnam, with an increase in users of more than 10 percent so far in 2010 over last year.
The Vietnamese-speaking people form a big part of the My Opera community of more than 5 million users. They are also among the most active - sharing photos, blogging and enjoying all the advanced features of the community.

A browser with unlimited possibilities
Opera Nalakuvara, community-made Opera browser, caters to the needs of Taiwanese Internet users.
One of the great features of Opera desktop browser is customization. Opera Nalakuvara, an Opera browser made by the Taiwanese community, today received official recognition from Opera Software. This is the first Opera browser designed especially for Taiwanese Internet users and there are currently nine packages available for various operating systems including Windows, Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, and generic Linux), and FreeBSD. Download it from http://jedi.org/opera/download.html
Opera Nalakuvara provides many thoughtful features that cater to the needs of Taiwan's Internet users for web browsing. It not only tweaks Opera's default settings, but also revolves around the third party components and menus of Opera Nalakuvara, including connecting to BBS sites via the telnet:// protocol within the browser. Also, Opera Nalakuvara has replaced the default Hotclick searches with popular, local web dictionary services such as Yahoo! Taiwan Dictionary and Merriam-Webster OnLine dictionary. For the ease of reading in either traditional Chinese or simplified Chinese, Opera Nalakuvara offers a hot button that can easily convert Simplified Chinese characters within a web page to Traditional Chinese characters, or vice versa.
"People have their preferred ways of browsing the Web. Opera's options and ability for deep modification gives the flexibility users need," says Jan Standal, VP Desktop Products, Opera Software. "We are impressed by Opera Nalakuvara. The effort of the Opera Taiwanese community to create such a quality product underscores their initiative and proves the unlimited possibilities of the Opera browser."
"There are many customized Opera versions around the world. It comes as no surprise that users from Taiwan have similar, yet different needs," says Jedi Lin the creator of the Opera Nalakuvara project. "This is why we began the Opera Nalakuvara project. I hope this version can not only make browsing the Web more convenient for all Taiwanese web users, but also attract more users to create their own Opera."
Opera Nalakuvara was first released in September 2009 and attracted more than 5,000 downloads in the first two weeks. Now Opera Nalakuvara has been updated to Opera 10.60. The customization is also well documented in the Chinese and English versions. For more detailed information, please visit the project website at http://jedi.org/opera/buildingoperanalakuvara.html

Opera Browser w/ Skyhook Wireless Position Function
I have always been a big fan of Skyhook Wireless' technology. These guys powered the iPhone/Google Maps faux-GPS technology using WiFi address to triangulate your approximate location. I just received word today that Opera Browser will team up with Skyhook wireless to enable Geolocation API suuport which allows you to provide your location to websites; enabling customized content based on your whereabouts.
The first thing that comes to my mind was that how is this different than using my LAN IP address to get my geo-location? I am guessing Skyhook's technology differs in that it can hone in closer to your true location since there are way more WiFi IP addresses scanned in their DB. Take a look below for my comparison.
Using my Statcounter account, I can identify myself as being in New York when I visited my blog (first pic below), however, when using my first gen. iPhone's Google Map locate me service, it pin-pointed to the corner of 35th Street and 7th Avenue (where I am!).
This technology will enable some vendors or retailers to provide up to the minute inventory or location based services to help consumers make a sound decision on where to go.
Keep in mind that this is currently available for Opera's desktop browser. I hope to see this feature make its way to the Opera mobile browsers.
Correction: I was explained that this technology will be available on mobile browsers as well. Nice!
