Sony Ericsson HPM-85 live pics

This is the supposed to be the best earphones from Sony Ericsson. It consists of a controller unit to control playback, the usual mic with answer button (like on all other SE handsfree models) and high quality headphones. The headphones can be folded for compact and easy storage and it also can be adjusted to suit different head sizes. The mic and controller unit are in glossy black plastic which

More more more Sony Ericsson P700 pics

Like I said before, everyday more P700 pics pop up. This time it's from a French forum called evenmobile. I like the cool icons. We also get a look at how the cam app's UI looks. It is like the P990's UI like PeterKay said in his review. More pics here and here. I wonder if there is another color version and if so, how it looks....

Music Video starring the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic

Check out this Chinese music video that was sponsored by Nokia. Nokia took this opportunity to promote their new 5700 XpressMusic phone which will be available soon. Well the phone appears in the clip alot and stands out since most of the clip is in dull colors. I find the music video funny and amusing.

Sony Ericsson K810 released and available

The phone has been released and available to buy in Hong Kong. Sony Hong Kong started to take pre-orders for the phone around 10 days ago but they will only start shipping the phones in the 3rd of May. It's great to see this phone released...now I am considering whether to buy one or not. The phone is also available from Ebay seller X1387 (plemix). Like all new phones, the price is high in the

Motorola launches E6 Jay Chou Edition

The special limited edition E6 was announced by Motorola a few days ago. It joins Motorola's campaign of those special limited edition Jay Chou 12 inch action figures. It is already available for sale in China and Hong Kong. The phone will have orange colors added to it (reminds me of Sony Ericsson Walkman phones). There will be Jay Chou logo with his name printed on the back (on the battery

A cool Chinese made 3.2 mega pixel phone

What I like about this phone is the fact that it looks kind of unique. It isn't directly copying another phone's design. The phone has a 3.2 mega pixel AF camera, 2.6 inch touchscreen, microSD support, FM radio and is triband. It is on a big sale over at Hong Kong since it isn't selling well according to hksincere.

Nokia 6111 disassembly video tutorial

This is about 8 minutes long and has clear instructions. I actually watched the whole clip eventhough I don't plan on opening a 6110 up. It was interesting for me. I would love to see a clip like this starring the Nokia N95.

2 hands on clips of Sony Ericsson's W44S

This is the W44S by Sony Ericsson for the AU KDDI network in Japan. It is a clamshell that opens two ways, one like a regular clamshell phone and the other like a communicator. It has a 3 inch 240x432 resolution 260k color screen (which looks fantastic) and a 3.17 mega pixel CMOS camera. The media player interface looks great. Why can't we have kickass GSM SE phones like the Japanese. Anyways,

Live pics of CECT I-70 : the Vertu clone

The maker of this phone says this is the luxury phone for the common people. Vertu is known for it's extremely high price and this clone cost way less. It is called Veptu instead of Vertu and has the name of CECT I-70. The battery cover is extra shiny and can be used as a mirror. It tries to mimic the real Vertu with a gold housing which unfortunately feels like plastic. The phone makes use of

Nokia E90 gets reviewed by mobile-review

Finally we have a E90 review from Eldar over at mobile-review. As usual his reviews are very in depth and detailed. We need to translate it with the help of Google or Babelfish though, since only the Russian version is up. This is definitely worth checking out. Sony Ericsson T610 with touchscreen

Check out this clip from youtube. Seems to show a T610 with a touchscreen. The clip is short and not very clear. Could this be a fake like the ubuntu running on the Nokia N70 and SE P990? It is highly unlikely that he installed a touchscreen and modified the software to make it work. Perhaps it's one of those fake Chinese clones.

Some pics of a new concept Sony Ericsson Walkman phone

I found this over at the Chinese it168 site. Looks interesting but I doubt anything like this will ever come out of Sony Ericsson. It looks like a PS of a Sony mp3 player, I don't remember the name of the model. In addition, I wonder how this device will be operated...looks to be touchscreen. In conclusion, an interesting fake.

New Nokia 8600 luna live pics

Thanks to darlamac we have more pics of the new Nokia 8600. Well I guess this is almost final. It looks like the previous live pics, the computer pic and FCC approved the phone just recently. Now we just need an announcement from Nokia.

Sony Ericsson W880 in 24 carat gold

This was found at a Swedish site e24.se. Not much details except that this phone is in 24 carat gold and costs 8600 Euros. It looks nice, not great though. I would like to see how the back looks like. At his price, I expect it to be gold in the back as well. Seems like gold is the way to go lately. Nokia 8800 Sirocco gold, LG Shine gold, 6300 gold, MOTO K1 gold and V3i gold to name a few.

Nokia 6110 Navigator live pics in both colors

The Nokia 6110 Navigator is Nokia's GPS phone. It is targeted for people who require GPS capabilities. It is a HSDPA slider with a 2 mega pixel camera and powered by S60 3rd edition. It is only 2 cm thick. The phone uses glossy plastic in both versions. I am really liking the white version just like the 6120 classic in white. The GPS UI looks nice and easy to use. LG SV280 banana phone live pics

This phone was discovered a while back. It is called the SV280 and nicknamed the banana phone because of it's banana like shape (especially when it is opened). The phone looks nice. Live pics of Sony Ericsson's Spiderman 3 accessories

Here are the special Spiderman 3 branded gifts that come bundled with the 4 designated SE phones. The spiderman 3 campaign started a few days ago. The accessories are actually quite nice. The skin is a crystal case with Spiderman designs. I thought it was a slipcase or silicone case. I strap is also alright, not too tacky. I liked the pouch the most. A few days ago I posted about the exclusive luxury Motorola V3i with gold and diamonds by Peter Alloison. Now he brings us the Nokia 6300 in 24 carat gold. LG's dual screen no buttons clamshell phone

This pic showed up over at Esato's forums. It is supposed to be a drawing of an actual prototype phone being developed by LG. It is a clamshell phone with a main screen at the upper area and at the lower area, instead of a keypad, there is a touchscreen. This kinda reminds me of the Nintendo DS gaming device. Look's cool if it is indeed made. Check out the page at the patent office.

Java mp3 player - KD Player v0.5.5

I found this at a Russian site. It is a Java based mp3 player called KD Player v0.5.5. It seems to have a lot of features like support for ID3 tags and creating and editing mp3 files. It is still in development so it could be a bit buggy. It should work in all Java enabled phones (was tested on Sony Ericsson W810, K800, Z710/Nokia Series40/5300). Unfortunately the program is in Russian.

Stylish metal skins for the LG Shine

These are made by a company called Mozedesign. It's a metal skin sticker that sticks to the top and bottom of the phone (in the pics are the LG KE970 Shine). The company emphasizes that these are not stickers but actual skins made of metal that protects the phone. They look nice but I wonder how durable they are and is it easy to remove them.source

Sony Ericsson telescopic radio antenna

Check out this cool home made radio antenna. This was posted by "eyeyousee" over at se-nse's forums. Well this eliminates the use of the wire headset as an antenna for the radio but you can't answer calls. Anyone who is interested in building one should check out the thread at se-nse. There is a tutorial there. Good stuff!

Another Nokia N95 clone and it's a slider this time

Well, here it is guys. The N95 clone that actually looks almost like the real thing (at least from the front). It comes in silver/plum like the real N95. It is even a slider unlike the previous clones I have posted which were candybars. It is a dual band phone featuring a 2.4 inch 260k color QVGA touchscreen, 1.3 mega pixel camera (boo!) and comes with 128 MB internal memory and supports microSD

Pics of Sony Ericsson T610 after the battery exploded inside

I found this at the same site that reviewed the Nokia N70 clone. These guys rock! The site is in Czech so I have no clue what is written there but the pictures are pretty self explanatory. The battery blew up inside the phone...I don't know if it was an accident or purposely done though. That explosion did quite alot of damage and probably generated alot of heat to melt the phones parts.

Nokia N70 clone gets reviewed

I can't believe it. Someone buying this clone I can believe but someone taking the time to do an in depth review is just hard for me to believe. Well I better believe it since mobil.cz did an in depth review of the phone. I have posted a N70 clone in the past. I guess this is the same phone but in black...music edition...hehe. Unfortunately the site is in Czech so I don't understand a word.

Tons of Samsung U600 live pics

The Samsung U600 is a new slider phone which is part of the new Ultra Edition II series phones. It is only 10.9 mm thick. It has a mirror like finish on the front. The phone looks clean and really slick. The keypad

Finally I am seeing something different in Motorola's designs. According to carphonewarehouse it is supposed to

Motorola MOTORIZR Z8 available soon

This is found in the carphonewarehouse's site under coming soon. The MOTORIZR Z8 is a triband HSDPA slider phone (banana style) with a 2 mega pixel camera and most importantly Symbian OS 9.2 with UIQ 3.1. This is the first non touch screen UIQ phone. It says it will be available at the end of April. I wonder if it's true.

New Sony Ericsson S500i phone found at Sony Ericsson's site

Well I did it again. I was really bored again and tried my luck with the UA profiles over at SE's site and I discovered that a S500i device existed. I remember a while back I found the W999i profile this way as well (almost everyone took credit for it =)). Anyways here is the profile. From the profile we know the phone is named S500i. It features a QVGA screen, looks to be quad-band like the W580

RSS in Plain English in 3.5 minutes

I just wanted to share with you a great video that explains what RSS feeds are in plain English in 3.5 minutes:

Just what I've been looking for an introduction to RSS! I'm just amazed that so many people are still unaware of this great technology. But of course that also means that are still many people out there that we can show the magic of RSS to ;) RSS feeds really help me to get all the interesting news; although I admit that I sometimes do feel overwhelmed by so many new items calling for attention and deserving to be read on my own computer :)

Lots of Nokia 5700 XpressMusic live pics and clip

The Nokia 5700 XpressMusic was announced by Nokia over 3 weeks ago. It is a combination of the 5300 and 3250. It has the 3250 twist design. It is a 3G phone featuring a 2.2 inch QVGA screen, 2 mega pixel camera, 2.5 mm earphone connector, stereo bluetooth and is powered by S60 3rd edition. This is quite a feature packed phone. I like the other color though (don't like red). Gophone has more pics

First live pics of the new Nokia 6120 classic

Another Nokia N95 clone and this time with a 5 mega pixel camera!

I found the first Nokia N95 clone over a week ago. Today by chance I found this clone while looking at the W950 clone. It uses the same design as the first clone (don't know why...maybe it's a hit over there in China?). It's a candy bar and not a slider. To me it looks like the N95 front but with it's keypad attached under the navigation keys (even the keys resemble the N95). It's called MB1500

This phone was leaked just recently and now there are live pics of the phone. It looks alot better than the previous computer generated pics. It is shiny (like Sony Ericsson's Z610) and has a hinge that reminds me of SE's Z600. It is unique with the slide down external screen to expose the camera and flash. The inside looks less good though. The screen is small. The top and bottom part of the

Sony Ericsson W950 clone

Just saw this over for sale on ebay. They made a real effort to rip off the W950 (copied the colors and design...more or less). The fact that they flipped the Walkman logo upside down to make in an "m" in mp3 really cracks me up. This dual band phone features a 2.4 inch QVGA touchscreen, stereo 3d speakers, 1.3 mega pixel camera, bluetooth and supports microSD cards. It measures 102x52x12.5mm (

The campaign in HK is different from the one launched in Taiwan. Anyone who purchases one of the designated phones in selected shops will recieve a special limited edition Spidey gift. Nokia Hong Kong messes up it's N95 brochure

Hksincere reports that there were 2 mistakes in Nokia Hong Kong's N95 product brochure. Even if you don't know Chinese, you can see the mistakes. In the first pic Nokia wrote that the phone has a 1.6 million color screen instead of 16 million. The second pic Nokia wrote that the phone supports miniSD cards instead of microSD. Quite funny that they messed up...also on such an expensive phone.

More live pics of the Porsche mobile phone

Phonedaily and hksincere posted some great live pics of the Porsche mobile phone that was discovered a few days ago in Hong Kong. It is called the Porsche Cayenne to be exact. The phone comes with tons of Porsche themed stuff like wallpaper and sounds (start-up sound of an engine, engine rumbling ringtone, shut-down brakes sound). It also features a 2 mega pixel camera tucked away in the hood of

Carnival of the Mobilists #70: Is RIM stupid or lying?

Welcome to the 70th weekly Carnival of the Mobilists. If you're not familiar with the Carnival, it's a collection of mobile-related commentary from the last week, nominated by the weblog authors themselves. The hosting duties rotate from week to week.

This week's articles cover a huge range of subjects, from game-playing cameras to RIM's service outage. I tried to come up with some clever theme to link them all together, but I think the main message is that the mobile market is so diverse that there are no common themes.

And away we go...

RIM's service outage: Are they liars, or just incompetent? Wow. The Mobile Enterprise Weblog gives a scathing analysis of RIM's recent service failure, and concludes:
"Either RIM's NOC is managed by idiots OR RIM's PR department is incompetent OR none of the above."

(With 'none of the above' meaning the company had a more serious failure and is trying to cover it up.) I have no idea what really happened, but this commentary is what occurs online when you try to play down a story. It's far better to be completely open about a problem. Then at least people may trust you in the future rather than assuming you're lying.

MVNOs: Victory of the bottom-feeders? Jason Devitt at Skydeck, a mysterious new mobile startup, contributes a very interesting post on the fate of MVNOs. He argues that the high-profile MVNOs targeting lucrative customers are doomed, and that the ones to watch are those targeting low-end customers.

How to improve feature phones. Little Springs Design reviews some of the flaws of today's feature phones, and makes suggestions on what needs to be changed.

American business executives should all use SMS instead of e-mail. That's the message from Tomi Ahonen's fervent (and very detailed) essay on the benefits of SMS messaging, and its ubiquity outside the US.

The dumbest convergence product of all time (in my opinion). Pocket Gamer brings us news of a new digital camera that comes with twenty video games built in. They treated the product with very polite respect, but I can't restrain myself: I thought I had seen dumb convergence products before, but this one's the new champion.

Using SMS to communicate to students. Mopocket editorializes that universities should use text messaging to communicate with students in emergencies.

The rebirth of Web Clipping? Well, sort of. Web clipping was a technique Palm used several years ago in an effort to overcome the latency problem with accessing web content on mobile devices. David Beers predicts that Palm's going to use something similar in the future.

Anger over mobile data charges. Helen Keegan editorializes on the charges for mobile data in the UK, and she's not happy.

Enthusiasm for Nokia's web tablet. b-trends brings us a very enthusiastic review of the Nokia n800 Internet tablet device. They tested a nice range of websites, and there are good screen shots.

Checking out a new operator in Spain. WAP Review gives a hands-on review of the Spanish operator Yoigo.

The future of mobile advertising. Always-on Real Time Access summarizes a recent panel on mobile advertising.

Future barcodes. The Pondering Primate speculates about possible future competition between Microsoft and Google in barcodes.

Mobile phone myths corrected. Shackkdiesel tackles some interesting myths about mobile phones.

Which devices to target in enterprise? Mobbu talks about the process for choosing which devices to target when creating an enterprise mobile application. It's not always best to pick the most advanced device.

Bloggus interruptus. My submission for this week is a short commentary on trying to use the mobile Internet while riding on a train.

A robot to load the dishwasher. SharpBrains contributes a summary of the recent Stanford Media X conference, a technology conference featuring Stanford researchers and others. Most of the content wasn't mobile-related, but it makes interesting reading anyway. Check out the robot that can load a dishwasher.

Post of the week. Each week's host traditionally picks a favorite post, and mine this week is Mobile Enterprise's rant on RIM's service outage. It's not the longest post of the week, but the analysis made sense to me, and I always enjoy a weblog post with a bit of passion to it.

So it goes. Next week's Carnival will be at the Silicon Valley Himalayan Expedition. Anyone with a weblog can submit a post to the Carnival. You can use the new online submission form here.

Video of gaming experience on Nokia N95

The games look great on the N95's big and quality screen. The games also run smoothly. The first game is K-rally, a car racing game with weapons. The second game is Skyforce (I don't know if it's the first one or the reloaded second version). The third is the 3d racing game that comes with the phone. I have the first two games on my P990. They are great games. At the end of the clip, the

Nokia E61i unboxing video

Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot K900i concept

This new Sony Ericsson K900i concept is from the creator who brought us the Nokia 74 and Nokia 8900 concepts. The creator's name is Tobias Hornof. This K900 looks quite good. Of course this is just a concept and is not a real SE phone.

FCC approves Nokia 8600

The folks over at engadget have discovered the Nokia 8600 in the FCC's archives. It is confirmed that the phone will be quad-band and support EDGE. There were no pics of the phone in the documents except for the one above showing the back, where the labels are supposed to be. Hopefully more info and pics will surface. Click for FCC

Yet more Sony Ericsson P700 pics

This time the pics focus on the UI of the phone. Wow the screen looks awesome and I am impressed with all the apps running at once. The stylus is bigger than the P990's stylus. Here is a sample video shot with the phone's cam. In case you didn't read the review, I highly recommend reading it. Click for review Click for more pics

Weird phone accessories

The first accessory is self explanatory. It's a piece of shit and you can squeeze it too. The second is a case design to look like a bar of chocolate. It even has a chocolate smell. The last two are just fancy cases for the fashion conscious.

Samsung U600 live pics

I usually don't like Samsung sliders. I find them all boring and look so similar to each other but this one is an exception. It really looks nice. It's quad-band, measures 103.5 x 49.3 x 10.9 mm and weighs only 81 grams. It features a 2.2 inch QVGA screen (looks of good quality) and a 3.2 mega pixel camera. Too bad it doesn't support UMTS.

Video proof of Sony Ericsson's M600 running W950 firmware

A few days ago a guy claimed to have succeeded in flashing his M600 with W950 firmware. He posted many pics and even a video clip but unfortunately they were not of good quality so lots of people suspected that it was a hoax. Now this clip from youtube is really clear and I think it proves that it is possible.

Ultimate Windows Mobile gaming phone?

This phone has a huge 3 inch screen, 4 speakers in the back around the camera (with mirror for self portraits)and light effects on the side of the phone. It also rips off microsoft and pretends to be a Windows Mobile device. The highlight is the option of attaching a game controller pad and an emulator for NES games. I must say that the device looks rather ok even a bit on the good side...the

More live pics of Motorola's latest phones

I have posted tons of pics from gophone of the RAZR Maxx V1100, KRZR Maxx K3, W510 and SLVRL72. Here is another good pic gallery from phonedaily. I must say that the MOTO style hasn't really changed in my eyes for quite a while and all the clamshell share some strong resemblences (it's getting a bit boring for me). Enjoy the pics!

Motorola MOTORAZR Maxx V1100 live pics

This is a brand new HSDPA clamshell with 1.3 mega pixel camera and another VGA cam for video calls. The phone also features stereo bluetooth and mediaplayer can be minimized to the background. The speaker is located at the bottom part of the phone and is supposed to be of really good quality (looks like the

This is a new SLVR series phone and successor to the L7. It is a metal styled candybar and is only 11.5 mm thick. The phone features a new CrystalTalk noise filtering function to maintain a clear call (sounds neat). The phone has a 2 mega pixel camera (with no AF and no leds),microSD card support, bluetooth stereo and FM radio. The cam interface can be used in landscape or portrait (nice touch).

Motorola Maxx K3 live pics

This new KRZR phone is the continuation of the MOTO K1 but with HSDPA. It features a thin clamshell design with mirror finish, 2 mega pixel camera with 8x digital zoom, support for microSD, front VGA cam (phone supports UMTS) and QVGA 260k color screen. New cigarette phone spring edition

Remember the first original cigarette phone? Now they have made a spring panda edition. Instead of red it is now a cool turquoise-green. It does look a bit better. I guess the red version was a success if they bothered making a new version. It is a ridiculous idea in my opinion but well executed though. That dude really looks like he is talking into a cigarette box. The phone features stereo

Student blogging: first impressions

Last night I had another meeting with my RL E-business Management students in Second Life. We talked a lot about different course activities, but mostly our discussion was focused on blogs. Why blogs and what did I learn during the discussion? Read below ;)
Waiting for students
Waiting for students
I already mentioned in a previous post that we'd introduce research blogs as an obligatory study activity this year (for our postgraduate students), and this Monday was the end of their first week of blogging. My task was to read them all though, assign grades, and write comments on blogs as a whole (I think the commenting part was THE important part of my task). I was really impressed with some of our students' blogs: many have managed to write really interesting posts, and it was really enjoyable to read some of their posts, get to know my students a bit better through their opinions and writing styles. We all still have a lot to learn about blogging, but the results of the first week show that some students have potentials for becoming good bloggers (I'd certainly love to some of them choose to continue blogging after the course), and that the majority of them will have no problems in completing this activity successfully.

But of course, that was just my personal observation of the activity, so I was really excited about last night's meeting in SL, as I saw it as a perfect opportunity to talk about how they feel about their blogs and blogging. Some students said blogging really engaged them, and that they really enjoyed this activity although it is quite time consuming (that's pretty close to my personal experience of blogging). A few students said they still didn't understand the point of blogging: why would someone want to make his/her own journal public? That is quite a usual question related to blogging that I often hear (not just from my students). People often see blogs as public, personal journals and don't understand why people are willing to let everyone know what's going on with their lives. I think that a lot of people don't know that the blogosphere isn't just about people writing about their personal lives, but also about people sharing their professional experiences and their passions. I don't like to blog about my personal life, but I enjoy sharing my professional experiences - both to keep track of my own development and to contribute my knowledge and experiences to the community.

During last night's virtual discussion I was also positively surprised by some of the questions my students asked. For example: how can we tell the relevance of information on blogs? Another student figured out that blogs can't be the only source of information when doing research. This shows that they have a positive critical attitude towards blogs. Although most of them never used or even read blogs before, they approached them both with an open and a critical mind. They don't just do what we told them to, but they ask their own questions! Isn't that great? One student even asked: who invented blogs? And I must admit I couldn't answer that question *blushes* But I find it extremely positive that students think of such questions! Especially because my students are adults, most with kids and jobs, and some with little or no experience with ICT - but still they show great readiness to learn, and great curiosity! I really feel lucky to have such students.

Having a discussion about blogs
During our discussion about blogs
Of course, I realize that the students that were willing to come to our virtual meeting in Second Life were probably the ones that had the most positive attitude towards the course or are naturally more motivated to learn new things, but still; honestly, I didn't expect so many students in SL, and I didn't think that so many of them would feel so positively about blogs, and all other course activities. But I guess it goes to prove that our educational systems have to be reinvented (call it Education 2.0 if you want :) ) and that the problem is not always with students not being interested.

I'd like end this post by pointing out some of the important lessons that I've learned from last night's discussion and our first week of student blogging:
  • Number one: the students really appreciate the fact that we're showing them new, real-life tools and giving them an opportunity (or even a reason) to try out new tools and learn about them in a different way (learning by doing). They like the fact that we challenge them, put them outside their comfort zone, and show them new tools.
  • Number two: not everyone likes the concept of blogging. Some still think forums are the best way to express yourself and connect with other users. However, those that like blogging feel really engaged by the activity.
  • Number three: Second Life is a good place to have discussions with your students. Adult students can put their kids to bed, and meet with their fellow students and instructors in the comfort of their own home. It can be a bit confusing to have multiple people trying to talk at the same time, but their "physical" presence does add a special feeling to it.
  • And last but not least: it is all worth it. It does take a lot of time to read students' blogs, it does take a lot of time to master new tools like SL. In fact, since we've started with our online course I've often felt overwhelmed by having around 80 students to follow more times a day (also during the weekends), 32 blogs on different topics to read and to comment (and not being to use RSS as their blogs are private), preparing the SL meetings, and all other every day obligations. But in the end, when you see happy avatars typing about how much they enjoy your course... that's really the reward every educator wants to get at the end of the day, isn't it? :)
Yes, it is all worth it.

More pics of LG Shine KE970 diamond clone

I posted a few days ago about this LG Shine clone. Despite the threats by LG, their phone has been cloned and also sold. These pics from pconline.com.cn gives us a better look at the phone's screen and keypad. The screen looks of good quality and the keypad also loos good. It's a decent clone that doesn't look cheap.

Sony Ericsson and Spiderman 3 campaign begins

Sony Ericsson W660 with new UI?

This pic was also posted by aboveconnection who posted the non walkman W580 phone. This pic is interesting because the UI of the phone seems to be in landscate mode. Maybe it has that rumored accelerometer (like the iPhone)?

First live pics and clip of a new non walkman W580

This is one nice phone. It appears to be a non walkman version of the recently announced W580. Maybe this is the Shinobu (the rumored specs don't match though...)? One thing is for sure, it looks awesome. The color combo is not typical SE but I really like it. There is also a very short clip showing the phone. Convert your Sony Ericsson M600 to W950

The Chinese iPhone clone ready and available

This is the closest to the real deal that I have seen. Ripping off the logo (the leaf of the apple switched sides), name, design and graphics...the box is so butt ugly. So much stuff written in big white fonts. The phone features a huge 3.5 inch touchscreen, support for T-flash cards and has 6 speakers (wow!). It is also dual mode supporting CDMA and GSM networks. It comes with a matching pouches

Pics of new Nokia 7XXX?

This just popped up over at Mobile-review's forum. The phone measures 106x44x14mm. It is a S40 phone featuring a 2 mega pixel camera with flash, 2 inch QVGA 16 million color screen and has 512 MB of internal memory. it might be a 7XXX series device. It has an unusual design especially the keypad arrangement. Also the back is designed to match the front. So many pics and leaks lately...

New pic of Sony Ericsson's W999i?

This just popped up over at Mobile-review's forum. I will sum it up in one word...WOW! I am really liking how this device looks. Slider Walkman phone with the M600 QWERTY keypad. I don't see a front cam for video calls though. If this was real, could this be the W950 successor?

The world's first Windows XP mobile phone

The Chinese have done it again. Just when I thought nothing can top the Porsche phone or the AK47 phone, this pops up over at phonedaily. This one brave rip-off...wonder what Microsoft thinks? Sony Ericsson W970 and deviantART

Remember that SE W970 Adriana pic that was posted yesterday? A visitor (thanks Sandro!) pointed out that in the bottom image of that pic, a deviantART user pic (called "The Music Machine") was used. This either discredits the pic (or at least that part of the pic) or there will be some promotion or collaboration?

Motorola MOTOKRZR K1 in pink

I found this over at carphonewarehouse's site. In their coming soon section where that unknown fashion Nokia phone (they took that down) was found, there is a pink Motorola KRZR K1. It says that it will be available in May. The pic looks nice and this will attract the ladies. Seems like the trend to release phones in many fresh colors. Take a look at Sony Ericsson.

This is really cool. It a greatpockets themed memory game. You have to find the all matching pairs behind all the pockets. There is no description where this is located...it's in English so maybe the UK? I guess this is good to entertain people waiting for the bus. I wonder how long before it breaks or someone vandalizes/sabotages/steals it. It is a great idea though. Check it out.

Yesky reports that SE will be releasing the phone in 4 new refreshing and fashionable colors, orange, red, light blue and light green. They will be available just in time for the summer. This reminds me of all those colorful VAIO's. Is SE following in the steps of Sony VAIO?

Unfortunately I found only 2 pics (from Yesky). With the phone released yesterday, I am sure there will be lots of pics and video clips soon. The phone looks nice.

Sony Ericsson W880 vs Samsung F300

Mobile-review have posted an in depth comparison of the W880 and F300 (with focus on music capabilities). It is in Russian so use Google to translate. In conclusion the W880 wins in their comparison, however the W880 costs more than the F300. I personally would pick the W880. It looks better to me and seems easier to use than the Samsung.UPDATEmobile-review have posted an english version

Sony Ericsson W660i gets reviewed

This is the first review of the W660 I have seen on the net. Eldar from mobile-review does an excellent job as usual. Very extensive and tons of pics. Unfortunately the review is in Russian so use Google to translate (probably an English version will be up soon). To sum it up, nothing new or revolutionary (similar to W610 except for 3G, cam and design). The phone looks great in both color

Sony Ericsson K818 approved by FCC

Mobilewhack has discovered from the FCC site that the K818c has been approved. The K818 is a non 3G version of the K810 just like the K790 is the non 3G version of K800. I am guessing that the release of the K810/K818 is not too far away.

The Porsche mobile phone

And I thought the AK47 phone was funny...behold...the Porsche phone (pics from phonedaily)! It's supposed to resemble the Porsche 911. There aren't many details about the phone. It has a cam near the windshield of the car. It is being sold in Hong Kong and costs about 165$ US.

New Sony Ericsson W970 Adriana official pic?

The first pic was found on imageshack and posted by a member at sumovil.com. The pic's name is W970 preview. The second pic of the W21S (a Japanese SE phone) was posted by Xumdeo to show the resemblance in the keypad buttons (he didn't say the first pic was a fake though...). The first pic was also supposedly also seen on some Chinese sites. It'is a W-series phone codenamed "Adriana" with some a

How vs. what: Why so many new tech products fail

Here's something I wrote for the Rubicon newsletter. It's relevant here.

One of the advantages of working as a consultant is that you get to look at the big picture across corporations. You can see trends and common themes that might not be obvious to somebody working in a single company.

A theme that’s become very clear lately is the tech industry’s difficulty telling the difference between “how” and “what” when designing products.

Most of our companies tend to focus on building what I call “how” products. That means products that focus on enabling technologies to let people do a wide range of tasks. For example, building a web browser and a WiFi connection into a product that doesn’t currently have them is a classic “how” move, because it enables the user to potentially do a lot of different interesting things.

As technophiles, we’re all very good at figuring out how to make use of a “how” feature. For example, we’ll say, “Gee, with a browser and WiFi in that product, I can install Skype and use it as a free mobile phone.” Then we’ll go out and find the Skype client, install it, maybe tune the configuration a bit, and sit back in amazement at how cool our industry is.

The problem with the “how” approach is that normal people don’t think this way. They are much more focused on “what,” as in “What does the product do for me?” Because they don’t understand technology at a deep level, they can’t see the possibilities created by a great enabling technology. And even if they could see the possibilities, they don’t have the skills necessary to adapt it to their needs. Even an (allegedly) simple act like pairing a wireless device to an unfamiliar WiFi router can be enough to give a typical user hives.

In competitive situations, “how” products usually lose to “whats”...

New offers for startups, and established companies that need insight fast

Please forgive the commercial message, but I wanted to let folks know about a couple of new services that we're offering at Rubicon Consulting. We're trying to design services tailored to the special needs of tech companies, so I'm interested in feedback and suggestions.

Most of the work I do in my day job is big, traditional consulting projects for tech companies -- defining a product strategy, creating a marketing plan, etc. But we noticed two situations in which people needed something smaller and faster. That's what the new offers are about.

Boot Camp: Bringing a team up to speed on a critical industry issue

A Boot Camp is an interactive half-day working session, led by Rubicon's principals (that's me and our other principal, Nilofer Merchant), focused on one of the most important issues facing tech companies. We teach your team what's happening, opportunities and pitfalls, and best practices. And we lead them through brainstorming on exactly what you can do about it. The session is designed to drive alignment, set priorities, and challenge conventional thinking.

In 2007 we're offering Boot Camps on:
--Moving from the enterprise market into small and medium business
--How traditional software companies can compete with Web 2.0 (hint: It's not about posting your app for free online and selling ads)
--Mobile market essentials for non-mobile companies
--Defeating an assault by Microsoft
--Online marketing: Best practices and killer opportunities

The Rubicon Consultation: Advice for startups

If you're an entrepreneur, you often don't need a project, you just need seasoned advice. The Rubicon Consultation is designed and priced specifically for that situation. Our principals work with your core team in a custom half-day or full-day session focused on a deliverable, plan, or issue that you need to resolve. Just like a consultation with a doctor, it's a great way to get quick insight from a trusted advisor.

Consultation topics can include:
--Review and tune a key presentation
--Refine the pitch for an important alliance
--Brainstorm product features and value proposition
--Define a market opportunity
--Get independent feedback on your strategy
...or whatever else you need. Just call us and ask.

We've been doing consultations for about six months now while we tested the process, and they're a lot of fun.

Click on these links for more information on Rubicon Boot Camp or the Rubicon Consultation. Or drop me a note.

Thanks for listening.

Why Web 2.0 still doesn't cut it for mobile devices

About a year ago, I wrote an article on "why Web 2.0 doesn't cut it for mobile devices." My basic argument was that because wireless web connections are intermittent and unreliable, a completely thin client architecture for applications won't work. (A thin client application is one in which the code for the app stays on a server, and all you have on your PC or mobile device is a little user interface widget. Every time you do something with the web app, your device has to talk to the server. Almost all web 2.0 apps are thin client apps.)

So here I am riding the BART train out of San Francisco, after spending the day at the Web 2 Expo. I'm using a Pantech/Sprint EVDO card in my computer, which gives the rough equivalent of low-speed DSL connectivity all over the city. Even though it cuts my notebook's battery life in half, I still think it's cool as ice cream in July.

Anyway, I'm having a good time working on a couple of blog posts, using the thin client Blogger interface, when the train goes through a tunnel. Guess what, no connection. Then we come out of the tunnel at a station, and my connection comes back for 30 seconds. Quick! Load that page! Then we go back into the tunnel again. And on, and on, and on.

Think of it as Bloggus Interruptus.

I guess I could ding Sprint for failing to extend its network to the subway tunnels, but this sort of problem is ubiquitous around the world for high-speed data networks. They have much less coverage than the voice networks, and that's changing only gradually. Even as we get more coverage, it won't be possible to depend on always having the connection when you need it.

The way mobile web apps need to work is that they download the full app and a copy of your data to your device, so you can work independently. Then in the background, they should sync the data whenever you're connected. That's how RIM's e-mail works, and it's still the state of the art for giving you the illusion of always-on wireless connectivity even though there's no such thing in the real world.
