When the bootloader is not the bootloader...

I'm going to address the two comments I received in this post. This basically has nothing to do with Linux, and more to do with iPhone hacking. There's a lot of confusion around with the jailbreak/unlock. The two comments basically hit upon the main points. The main confusion centers around the fact that when you buy an iPhone, you're not just getting a computer, you're getting TWO computers.

What I'm interested in is the S5L8900, the thing that runs the iPhone software. There is another device called the commboard, which has its own processor, nonvolatile memory, boot sequence and everything. It's barely an oversimplification to state that the system board (the S5L8900) and the commboard can only communicate with each other over a serial UART. That is, the only way the system board can control the commboard is with human-readable AT commands! Not very low level at all; they're not very integrated. Being able to hack kernel mode code like iBoot does not give us any more access than we had through minicom on a jailbroken iPhone.

kavkan asked me if iPhone Linux would obviate the unlocks. He then started talking about putting on third-party applications, etc. Putting third party applications on your iPhone is usually referred to as jailbreaking: stuff we do on the S5L8900. When we say unlock, we're usually mean a SIM-unlock. That necessarily means breaking a whole other, entirely distinct, set of security that's on the commboard. A jailbreak makes it easier to do that (because you can now talk to the commboard with that serial UART I discussed earlier), but it's entirely separate.

marc asked me about "bootloader corruption" as it pertains to basebands. As I said earlier, the bootloader I am talking about is on the S5L8900. The baseband/commboard has its own bootloader and its own non-volatile memory (also NOR flash, probably the same bit of flash its bootloader and firmware sits on too). The recovery mechanism on the baseband is far less robust than the one on the S5L8900. The only sure way seems to be using that hardware testpoint to force it to accept a new bootloader, and even that can be defeated by carefully crafting the NOR contents. In other words, it sucks.

In addition, a lot of the problem is due to bad software overwriting the seczone with bad data, stuff that's unique to your phone. Therefore, information is irretrievably lost and there may not be a way to recover.

The disclaimer is, of course, I'm not a baseband expert. This stuff is only what I've surmised by hanging out with some of them. It's kind of funny. On the dev team, w___ and Zf (they're baseband guys) and I were talking about how little we each know about the others' work. We do pretty much the same work, but on different platforms. After I explained what we do on the S5L8900, I think w___ said that he did the same thing "only on the baseband, you have a man sitting on top that does stuff to you for unknown reasons". And for the S5L8900 people, we have a little black box connected to us that either magically works and lets us call people... or not.

iPhone EDGE on 2.0 Firmware, Slow, Confirmed!

I've noticed this myself over the past week, the 1st gen. iPhone running firmware 2.0 is excruciating slow when launching applications (such as: contacts, photos, camera, etc.). It is also becoming more buggy as it would randomly quit 3rd party applications to homescreen or just restart the iPhone.

Personally, I find that speed issue becomes more bearable if I keep the third party applications to a minimum of 6 or 7. However, I find a lot of problems with synchronization with iTunes (ie. Not sync'ing back with Address Book, no option to set backup settings as it takes so long, etc.)

Just so you can rest assure you are not the only one seeing this slowness happening, I found the following links confirming the same thing: TUAW | MacWorld | 37 Signals

PS - On my 3G iPhone, its a bit faster, wonder if its because of better hardware or the slight difference in the 2.0 firmware build.

BlackBerry KickStart Flip Phone Video

The folks at CrackBerry.com got a hold of the latest BlackBerry entry, the KickStart which is a flip-phone styled BlackBerry. This is the first time in RIM history to produce their tried and true device in a flip form factor. Engadget posted a video here if you want to see a good video review.

As I watched the video of the KickStart 8220 bootup, I can't help but getting a Deja-vu feeling of the Nokia-empire. It feels very much like seeing the good ole' Symbian S60 3rd edition OS appearing on various form factor smartphones Nokia has to offer (Eseries, Nseries, etc.).

Its amazing to watch Research In Motion to transform its once small empire into such a wide array of products. If they keep up the reliability end of things, I see lots of good things to come.

Review: Griffin’s Tune Buds Mobile

I’ve been looking for a pair of 3.5mm stereo headphones with in-line mic for quite some time. I wanted something with value & performance and willing to go up to $50. There are some serious contenders when it comes to headphones but to require built-in mic and set a cap at $50, this is where it filters down to zero. While most multimedia phones come with OEM stereo headphones/mic (ie. Nokia N95 and iPhone) the quality is just not quite what I am looking for.

Background: For a long time, I’ve been pretty satisfied pairing up a set of Sony Fontopia (EX51LP)with my classic iPods. They have a good in-ear design, sounds great and is very good value for the performance (Amazon.com has them for $20, MSRP $35). If only the Fontopia is available with an inline mic.

Griffin Tune Buds Mobile: Griffin Technology decided to get into the game with their Tune Buds Mobile. It offers in-ear design which is something I must have for plane rides to block out ambient noise and a built-in mic to take calls. The 3.5mm jack design is slim to fit the poorly designed first generation iPhones. It, of course, will work with any smart phones with a 3.5mm jack. The built quality is decent, with a nylon-woven-braided material to cover the cords. The cords length are no different than any standard headphones, however, I do miss the Fontopia’s wrap-around-neck design where the right ear bud is a little longer and sits behind my neck instead of hanging in front of my chest. I like the black finish as it matches up quite nicely with my iPhone using a black protector (ClearBoost). The glossy finish on the buds tops off the Darth Vader style I am going after. At $39.99 MSRP (some vendors on Amazon has it for $30), this product fits all of my search criteria, so it looks like we have a potential winner here.

Performance: The sound quality is good; the bass is low and the highs are crystal clear. The in-ear design is important to block out ambient noise which heightens the music playback fidelity. The package comes with three sets of bud adaptors (small, medium and large). By default, it has the medium size installed, while inserting the buds to my ear, I can ear some funny rubbing noise which I believe comes from where the rubber adaptors rubbing against the base of the buds. No harm here, just something I have to get used to. I like the nylon-woven-braided cords; it feels more industrial and being black, it obviously hides dirt and stain marks better than the white/rubbery cords I am used to. The high sensitivity mic worked as promised with a button in the cord which lets me receive calls at will. I noticed I have to hold the mic unit closer to my cheeks or turn my head towards it to provide a better sound for my recipients. This could just be me as I am not known to be a loudmouth while speaking on phones in public.

Conclusion: I find Griffin’s new Tune Buds Mobile a very good alternative to OEM headphones providing high quality sound range and a built-in mic. In this price range, there isn’t anything on the market so I would recommend this earphones for those interested in something better than what your phone comes with. As for me, I refuse to use Bluetooth Headsets, simply because they are counter-productive, both the Bluetooth headset and device will end up draining battery faster than what I would like. That said, these headphones are great for mobile warriors, the package even comes with a little carrying pouch to protect your investment on the go.

Mobile Applications Finally Getting Deserved Attention

So, the red headed stepchild known as the mobile application is finally getting big, many thanks to Apple's recently launched Apps Store and the PR machine of Google Android OS. Apple's mobile applications quickly exceeded 10 million downloads within days of launch.

Mobile applications are nothing new. Palm has always adopted this model for their PDAs and Treo devices. Business like Handango sells mobile applications for a lving. What is different today is the easiness to buy, install, customize and remove these applications. The early mobile applications are clunky and difficult to work with. Majority of them require installation from a desktop machine. Today's mobile applications are vastly improved; they offer simple one-click installation/removal process that utilizes advance functions of smartphones (ie. GPS, WiFi, 3G Data Connection). In fact, as Video Acceleration for smartphones take more precedence, we will see more Widget-like mini applications perform powerful duties on various handsets.

As a marketing or IT professional, you are now required to think about how you would position your company into the mobile world. Depending on your services, you should consider the following options when developing your mobile application or web services:

Customer Demographics: Who are your primary customer target? Are they young or old? Male or Female? Answering these questions will likely help you design a mobile program that is tailored for your core customers. If, for example, your core customer is older and female. Chances are, they will not be very into smartphones. Perhaps a simple SMS alert sales/coupon campaign is more fitting, where as professional BlackBerry users may cater more towards a mobile email campaign. Younger, male audience will be more susceptible to trendy mobile applications that utilizes a smartphone's bells and whistles (hint: social networking?). Omniture just announced analytic features for mobile devices, where they can provide the breakdown of your customer's mobile browser, visit/log, and match back against a library of handset profiles, this can be very helpful to construct a mobile application that is fitting.

Consider your products and services: Are you a content publisher? eCommerce retailer? or a store with offline presence? If you do business online, is there a complicated checkout process? These questions can help you decide what mobile services to develop. For example, if you are a content provider, you may consider a robust mobile-web page that is universally compatible to majority of mobile browsers or simply push your content via an RSS feed which also works with mobile readers. AP Newswire and NY Times both have developed iPhone apps which are customized readers offering their news content quickly/dynamically, just as Travel Channel GO offers mobile applications for BlackBerry and Nokia Symbian S60 handsets. Consider the ability to allow your customers to download your content while they have data connection so they can view it while they are on a plane or in a subway at a later time; the value add here is giving them access even when they are disconnected. Having a mobile application available is going to provide a better user experience because you can take maximize each handset's built-in functions (buttons, Wifi, GPS, etc.), the trade-off is you would have to develop one application per smartphone type (ie. iPhone, Symbian S60, Android, Windows Mobile). Perhaps if you are an ecommerce retailer, an application in this case would be more suitable and justifiable to speed up the mobile experience in browsing catalogs and checkout; as long as you have a decent product feed, your can leverage all sorts of options. Building an application can be easy nowdays thanks to turnkey solutions providers; Godiva and 1800Flowers have both engaged in putting up their catalogs into a customized BlackBerry application powered by Digby. Perhaps your company provide a service with physical stores, try to think of ways to empower your customers with easiest way to get to your store equipped with the knowledge of cost and inventory. I mentioned Bank of America offering a cool application for the iPhones where they can use a user's handset location to suggest the nearest ATM and Branch. E*TRADE Mobile Pro is another financial services firm to join the mobile revolution by giving full account access over a BlackBerry application. Starbucks has a mobile website designed to help you to find the nearest cup of Joe. Generally speaking, mobile applications can provide more robust, simplified user experience that can defy the smaller screen challenge; one of the best example is eBay's iPhone application, simply amazing to carry out all primary functions from its website!

Some companies sees the impact of mobile marketing has on its core products even though its primary service may not have a direct link with the software side. Take Griffin Technology for example, they provide hardware accessories for iPhones/iPods but their software team jumped on the iPhone blitz with two games (5-Card Draw and Slots), apparently, both titles are well-received and have made it to the top spot in terms of download (within top 40 of paid apps). In my own personal experience, I am currently working with a mobile shopping portal called mShopper on one my projects at work. These guys offer a turnkey solution to create a WAP shopping portal for mobile handsets; all I had to do was provide them with a product feed normally used for comparison shopping engines (more reference here).

To sum this up, mobile applications are here to stay and this is just the beginning. It may seem like a fad because everyone is now trying to get into the game. If you are a marketer, consider your demographics, user profile and your own services to build a functional mobile experience for your audience. Keep in mind that you are not replacing existing channels (catalog, phone, web, stores) but to compliment with an extra value-add. If executed correctly, this is probably the most personal and intimate channel than ever since most mobile users would carry a phone everywhere they go up to 10 hours per day.

Early Problems with the "3G" in the iPhone 3G

It appears that on my 3G iPhone, it is doing a poor job switching back to EDGE network when 3G connection is weak. This often leads to an error message prompting me that the iPhone has failed to establish data connection. Since I've owned other 3G devices in the past (AT&T 8525 and Nokia N95-3), I am not surprised that 3G connection is not always available depending on where you are. However, in all my historical mobile experiences, those 3G devices would quickly downgrade it's network into 2/2.5G or EDGE(GPRS) network thus providing seemless internet access with seeing the full signal bars.

To my knowledge, the iPhone 3G has the same ability to auto-detect and switch down to EDGE; however, I think the way its setup is not sensitive enough to coop with real world needs. For instance, I should never have been prompted a failure to establish data network until the iPhone has attempted to kickdown to a slower speed network; because as is, leaving me hanging without any data connection is not a desirable mobile experience.

A work-around is to manually turn 3G off, it will force the iPhone to run on EDGE, and you'll see more bars.

Mobile Experience: Information Management

What do you guys use for managing your mobile data, such as Contacts, Calendar, etc.? As for me, I am still relying on the good ole' Outlook 2007 for my contacts. I can't seem to let go of a tried and true contact system. Although I do, occasionally, export my contacts as a CSV file into GMAIL Contacts. This keeps a virtual address book available for me to access anywhere. (Although I do wish there is an auto sync'ing function so this can be refreshed automatically)

Another benefit of having my contacts imported into GMAIL is that it can easily be exported onto my Mac Address Book via vCards. I used to have a lot of trouble exporting from Outlook into AddressBook, with Gmail in between, it works great as an conduit; perfect for updating my iPhone in OS X mode.

As far as calendar goes, I am slowly shifting to Google Calendars (away from Outlook 2007). The benefit of Google calendar is its ability to share entries amongst friends. It always has a great feature where you can push your calendar via a private subscription link onto Mac's iCal. Google also provides a "sync" tool for Outlook 2003 & 2007.

PWNAGE 2.0 and iPhone Apps Not Working Right?

Some first generation iPhone folks with PWNAGE 2.0 are noticing a bug, when launching applications installed from the App Store, the app would launch for a second or two and crashes back to Home Screen. The fix seems to be easy enough, simply re-PWN it.

I went through the process of re-pwning a new custom firmware, this time, I built the custom firmware by answering "yes" to the question: Have you Pwn'd before? Once built, simply connect your iPhone to iTunes and hold down "option key (mac)" and click "restore" and select the freshly built firmware. Because you've pwn'd it once, you no longer need to boot into DFU mode first to restore the newly built firmware.

The apps seem to work fine after that!
Update 7/25/08: This happened again to me, but I am onto something. It appears that the first set of applications I downloaded reside in iTunes, this somehow conflicts with the same set of apps I re-downloaded onto the iPhone itself. To get a clean scratch, I deleted all apps off of my iTunes, sync with iPhone to remove all apps. Downloaded all the apps I wanted to iTunes again, then sync'd it with the iPhone. So far so good.

Update 7/26/08: The iPhone Apps crashing issue appears to be isolated from PWNAGE. Looks like the general iPhone/iTunes Apps situation is a big mess. Other people are reporting the iPhone Apps crashing as well as another issue (I also noticed it earlier today) that iTunes is not sync'ing up well with iPhone's applications. It appears that iPhones can get application updates without problems but iTunes is not seeing the same updates. Even if you updated your applications via iPhone, it will not sync back to your iTunes library. As for me, because of this complicated update situation, even on an all-stock 3G, non-PWNED iPhone, it is yielding some sync' errors with iTunes.

Mobile Marketing Showcase: Bank of America iPhone App

There is no doubt about the way iPhone and APPLE's app store is going to change the way mobile commerce is going to be in the near future. I am always interested in seeing the big players make their moves in this new territory. Starting with this thread, I will create a new series called 'mobile marketing showcase'.

Bank of America is not holding back any, I saw a paid search ad (Content Targeting, actually) in my GMAIL inbox and it took me to this landing page.

It is nice to see the aggressive move made by BoA to introduce their commitment in mobile banking. I am not a BoA customer, but something like this can easily be viewed as a value add from a financial institution.
