DroidCon: Tattoos and Android™ benchmark ambitions put Sony Ericsson in focus

Sony Ericsson was the benchmark for JavaME, and wants to be the same for Android™. That, and a bunch of temporary tattoos, put Sony Ericsson in focus at DroidCon.

Last week Sony Ericsson participated in the two day DroidCon event in London, UK. The event gathered 400+developers and industry professionals, all keen on discussing the hot topics in the Android world. The Developer World team from Sony Ericsson was there to talk to developers about Android development, and spread the word about Sony Ericsson´s commitment to Android.

Sony Ericsson also had one keynote session at the event, where Karl-Johan Dahlström and Erik Hellman presented their thoughts under the headline Android behind the scenes. In the session, Karl-Johan Dahlström emphasised Sony Ericsson´s strong commitment to Android by stating that Sony Ericsson is aiming to be the Android benchmark, similar to how the company became the JavaME benchmark back in the days. Dahlström explained how Sony Ericsson developed that platform since the early start into an industry standard well known for its performance, stability and consistency.

- We will do the same with Android, Dahlström said.

Dahlström and Hellman went on to explain how this will happen, by naming a number of strategies where the most important one undoubtedly is to contribute even more to the Android Open Source Project. The duo also shared some insights in the design behind Sony Ericsson’s phones, by explaining how design concepts like Human Curvature™ and Precision by Tension™ are used as cornerstones in the creation of a great user experience.

- Going forward Sony Ericsson will have a strong focus on Android, and will continue to build the successful Xperia™ brand, by bringing together the world of Android and the world of Sony in beautiful hardware and software designs, Dahlström said.

A steady stream of visitors passed through the Sony Ericsson booth during the two days. Many were interested in the new Sony Ericsson LiveView™, a micro display that connects to an Android phone by Bluetooth™. By popular demand, the Developer World team made a not yet released pre-version of the LiveView SDK temporarily available to developers during the hackathon that took place in during one of the nights. A number of exited Android developers then went on to create LiveView plugins all night.

But the biggest hit of all at the event was the temporary tattoos provided by Sony Ericsson. A long line of eager developers were happy to get their own Developer World tattoo.
