T-Mobile Cell Site Now Powered by the Sun
T-Mobile is hoping the sun is shining down on one of its cell towers in Chalfont, Penn. That’s because the gear is T-Mobile’s first solar-powered cell site in the U.S., and enables T-Mobile to tap into the sun to power a selection of gear that provides wireless broadband services.
T-Mobile didn’t give more details on how much power the 12 solar panels attached to the site would generate, only saying the power was enough to take the cell site off-the-grid and then “at times” feed power back into the grid. T-Mobile can use the cell site for lowering its carbon footprint (and green marketing) as well as potentially saving on its energy bill, but savings on electricity costs via solar often times have a long pay back period. Solar can also be used as a backup power source for cells if power grid blackouts occur.
The T-Mobile solar-powered cell is somewhat unusual in that it wasn’t built in a developing country. Phone companies most often turn to solar-powered cells in countries like India, and parts of Africa, where the sites can be few and far between, and phone companies want to use solar to replace or augment diesel-powered back up generators (see our report How Mobile Networks Can Cut Carbon, GigaOM Pro, subscription required). According to Pike Research, 4.5 percent of the world’s cellular base stations will run off of solar and wind by 2014, up from 0.11 percent in 2010.
In certain developing regions, solar-powered base stations can be economical. Phone companies are increasingly factoring in diesel fuel costs over the life of the system compared to the free fuel that is solar. Mobile operators are also taking into account potential carbon legislation (that makes carbon-based power more expensive), as well as the likelihood that the cost of clean power will drop in the future. Connecting into the grid can also be quite expensive in certain regions: for example, it’s $8,000 per kilometer to connect into the grid in rural Namibia, according to Kuwait-based Mobile Telecommunications Co.
Chalfont is a small, several-thousand-person community, but well developed, so those typical developing-world economics aren’t likely at play for the U.S. solar cell site. Solar-powered cell sites generally cost two to three times more than grid power in many regions, according to the GigaOM Pro report. My guess is this first tower is mostly a way to test the technology and use it as a marketing tool. Phone companies have boosted their green efforts in recent months as a way to cut costs, and get some good PR.
But as we note in our How Mobile Networks Can Cut Carbon report: “the first, and most effective, strategy for reducing energy consumption in mobile networks is to improve the energy efficiency of network infrastructure equipment itself.” Base stations actually make up 70-to-80 percent of the energy consumption from cellular networks, so it’s really important to reduce their overall power draw, instead of just switching them over to clean power. Pike Research says that clean power technology, like solar and wind and fuel cells, combined with energy efficiency, could reduce the carbon emissions due to mobile infrastructure in 2013 by at least 101 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e), a decrease of 42 percent from business-as-usual trendlines.

T-Mobile G2 to Pack Android 2.2 Froyo, Qualcomm "Scorpion" CPU

If you're determined to get an Android slider on T-Mobile, then perhaps the upcoming T-Mobile G2 is the phone for you. However, its specs may change your mind.
The company's insider newsletter T-Mobile Scoop reveals that the HTC Vision, aka the T-Mobile G2, will be using an 800 MHz MSM7x30 chip. That chip uses the Qualcomm's Scorpion ARM CPU, also found in the 1 GHz Snapdragon.
The lower clock speed seems like a bit of a blow. But when you factor in that the 1 GHz Snapdragon crunched approximately 2.5 times less frames than the Samsung 1 GHz Hummingbird (a Cortex A8) in the GLSBenchmark, it appears even worse, given that the CPU core appears to have certain design shortcomings in the first place.
The good news is that the slower CPU will at least be somewhat offset by the operating system; the G2 will run Android 2.2 "Froyo" (which notably comes packing Flash 10.1). As we previously discussed, Froyo brings a Just-in-Time Java compiler to the table, which allows Android applications to run up to five times faster. Thus even this slow CPU may be capable of some decent performance.
Reportedly HTC isn't going to lay the Sense UI on top of this particular Froyo build. That should offer better performance, and either improved or deteriorated usability, depending on your perspective on HTC Sense. T-Mobile does brag that the phone will include "one-touch quick keys" to quickly access key functions.
The G2 has a couple of key advantages -- namely, that it has a physical keyboard, it's T-Mobile's first HSPA+ phone, and that it's on one of the most appealing networks in terms of contractual obligations and price. However, in the face of phones like the Epic 4G and HTC EVO 4G -- also on a well-priced network -- the G2 faces some stiff competition.

T-Mobile Takes Action to Prepare for Hurricane Earl
Readying Network Throughout Eastern Seaboard.
T-Mobile USA, Inc. is preparing for the potential impact of Hurricane Earl, with wireless network preparations underway throughout the Eastern Seaboard, especially from the Carolinas and north to the Canadian border. The company is fully mobilizing all necessary resources to restore service to its customers and emergency first-responders if its cell sites are affected by the storm.
The T-Mobile Incident Command Team stands ready throughout the Eastern U.S., with local Command Centers established in the following areas: Charlotte, N.C.; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, Pa; New York, N.Y.; Parsippany, N.J.; Long Island, N.Y.; Hartford, Conn.; and Boston, Mass. In addition, T-Mobile has a National Response team monitoring the event, with backup support from Snoqualmie, Wash. T-Mobile technicians and engineers will be mobilized to support and assist any network restoration that is needed as soon as post-hurricane conditions permit. Finally, the company’s Network Operation Centers (NOCs) will also be responsible for managing network traffic during this event, and the company has redundant support in place for each NOC.
T-Mobile is taking the following additional steps to prepare the company’s network for the storm:
* In the event of widespread power outages, T-Mobile has access to additional fuel to supply our generators and company repair and transport vehicles, and for other emergency circumstances.
* Backup generators and fuel tanks for regional network switch operations are in place, have been tested, and fuel has been topped off.
* To further supplement the fixed and portable back-up generators, T-Mobile currently has in place at its cell sites throughout the region dozens more portable generators, ready to be transported to impacted areas.
* Microwave radio equipment has been trucked into the region to facilitate data communication from the cell sites to T-Mobile's network switches, as backup, in the event T1 fixed-line service fails.
* T-Mobile has several Cells-On-Wheels (COWs) pre-staged in neighboring markets to move in and provide additional wireless communications capacity in the hardest-hit areas.
* T-Mobile will monitor evacuation efforts and routes, and will take steps to increase wireless capacity in those areas as customers move inland.
* The company also is coordinating recovery efforts with local, state and national officials.
T-Mobile is also preparing for storms that are expected after Earl, including Fiona and Gaston.
T-Mobile Customer Tips
In order to better facilitate communication between families and loved ones, and to alleviate anticipated network congestion before, during and after any storm, T-Mobile recommends its customers follow these important tips:
* Use text messaging to communicate instead of voice calls. Text messaging has a greater success rate in getting through the network during high-usage periods versus voice calls.
* Keep your voice calls short in duration.
* Make sure your phone is fully charged prior to the storm. Consider obtaining a vehicle charger in the event of power loss.

* To further supplement the fixed and portable back-up generators, T-Mobile currently has in place at its cell sites throughout the region dozens more portable generators, ready to be transported to impacted areas.
* Microwave radio equipment has been trucked into the region to facilitate data communication from the cell sites to T-Mobile's network switches, as backup, in the event T1 fixed-line service fails.
* T-Mobile has several Cells-On-Wheels (COWs) pre-staged in neighboring markets to move in and provide additional wireless communications capacity in the hardest-hit areas.
* T-Mobile will monitor evacuation efforts and routes, and will take steps to increase wireless capacity in those areas as customers move inland.
* The company also is coordinating recovery efforts with local, state and national officials.
T-Mobile is also preparing for storms that are expected after Earl, including Fiona and Gaston.

In order to better facilitate communication between families and loved ones, and to alleviate anticipated network congestion before, during and after any storm, T-Mobile recommends its customers follow these important tips:
* Use text messaging to communicate instead of voice calls. Text messaging has a greater success rate in getting through the network during high-usage periods versus voice calls.
* Keep your voice calls short in duration.
* Make sure your phone is fully charged prior to the storm. Consider obtaining a vehicle charger in the event of power loss.

Federal Agency to Leverage Company’s Fast HSPA+ Network, Wi-Fi Calling Capabilities.
T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced that the company has been awarded a three-year blanket purchase agreement (BPA) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Under the terms of the agreement, the EPA and its 17,000 employees will have access to a full range of T-Mobile products and services – from the company’s global Wi-Fi calling capabilities and broad selection of government-approved devices to its super-fast HSPA+ mobile broadband network, which now covers nearly 50 metropolitan markets. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network is the most pervasive to offer 4G speeds in the country1.
The first major carrier to offer Wi-Fi calling, T-Mobile helps enterprises, like the EPA, take advantage of this technology to enhance domestic and international coverage, reduce domestic and international minute usage, increase enterprise mobility cost savings, and improve productivity benefits from open Wi-Fi access points across the globe. The company now hosts approximately 40 million Wi-Fi calls per month.

T-Mobile: Samsung Galaxy Portal will get Android 2.1 “within the next month”
Hooray! The Samsung Galaxy Portal, which is a very nice if slightly bland 3.2″ Android phone, launched with Android 2.1 as its OS on the Three network – but the T-Mobile version of the phone has been literally LANGUISHING with Android 1.5 since it appeared in March of this year.
But that’s about to change. While the rest of the world bangs on about Android 2.2, Galaxy Portal owners will be glad to hear they’ll get 2.1 very soon. Here’s a man from T-Mobile UK confirming the arrival of 2.1 for the Portal:

T-Mobile G2 Running On New MSM7X30 Chipset: Native 720P 30FPS Recording And Playback, Better 3D Performance And More
Based on a tweet by Cyanogen, the G2 isn’t going to be sporting another rehash of the Snapdragon family of chipsets that has come to dominate HTC devices for the past 6 months.
You may remember back in November of 2009 (or maybe not, I didn’t) that Qualcomm demoed an updated family of chipsets for mobile multimedia devices. The name of that chipset is the remarkably catchy MSM7X30 (really has a ring to it, no?), and it’s bringing a little more to the table than its predecessors.
We already knew the G2 would be shipping with HSPA+ connectivity (the first phone to have it), but that’s only one of the goodies Qualcomm’s upgraded chipset will be offering:
720P video encoding (recording) and decoding at 30FPS
Integrated 2D/3D GPU’s with OpenGL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 API support
5.1 surround sound output
Up to 12 megapixel camera support
Integrated GPS
Support for processor speeds between 800MHz and 1GHz (Scorpion CPU’s, same as Snapdragon’s)
All of this considered, the G2′s spec sheet could really cause some heads to explode. Aside from what we’ve listed, Qualcomm is also touting that it is one of their most power-efficient chipsets. The new GPU could make the G2 the must-have gaming phone among Android devices, perhaps even besting the currently 3D-frontrunner, Samsung’s Galaxy S.
All of this information is derived from what we know of Qualcomm’s chipset, though. The actual specs of the G2 may vary, depending heavily on HTC’s work to integrate the chipset’s new features into the Android OS. Only time will tell, but this beats the next-to-absolutely-nothing we knew about the G2′s spec sheet just yesterday.

What’s inside the GAPPS for the T-Mobile G2? Google Voice.
This is some pretty interesting stuff. Our very own Andrew Steffy decided to flash the GAPPS (Google-Apps) found in the recently leaked T-Mobile G2 build over a CyanogenMod 6 nightly on his Nexus, and voila… it works!
Inside the GAPPS you’ll find the all the new widgets and apps you’ve come to know and love from stock Froyo (Market widget, tips, etc.), and a whole lot more. As far as we can tell, just about every Google app available for Android comes already installed on the device. When they said “with Google,” they weren’t kidding. What’s more, there’s even something new: A Google Voice widget. The new Google Voice widget shows how much money is in your GV account, and features handy buttons for quick access to your inbox, a compose message function, settings for when to use GV, and a button to turn Google Voice off.
Could the revolution continuing have something to do with T-Mobile and VOIP? Exactly how Google Voice will work with your G2 and T-Mobile isn’t quite clear yet, but we know that with the calling features recently added to the web-based GMail client, Google is pushing it hard. Of course, this could just be a good time for Google to push out a new widget, but hey, we can dream right? Look for more information to develop when we find it. T-Mobile UK: FroYo update for HTC Desire due “next month”
T-Mobile has today updated its customers (scroll down) on when they can expect the Android 2.2 update to arrive for owners of T-Mobile branded Desires – and the answer is “next month”. So while Vodafone users should get Android 2.2 on Monday, T-Mobile owners are being told/asked to wait until September.

Recent Trademark Filings Hint at T-Mobile’s Future
I decided to poke around the US Trademarks website this morning to see if I could glean anything about T-Mobile's upcoming projects or handsets. Every once in a while I will do this to see if I can confirm rumors or substantiate a claim. So did I find anything today? You bet. Looking back over the last three months or so, we can see that the carrier is definitely working on something around a successor to the beloved G1. Among the recent trademark filings, I came across the following:

* G1 Blaze - May 26th
* G1 Rocket - May 26th
* Rocket - May 26th
* DRIVESMART - June 10th
* G2 - July 12th
* Jet - July 29th
* Cliq 2 - August 6th
My gut tells me that Blaze, G1 Blaze, G1 Rocket, and G2 are likely all one in the same. T-Mobile has probably not formally decided which name they'll be using, although G2 is the most recent filing. The description given for DRIVESMART indicates smart phone software that switches to a safe driving mode where text messaging, e-mail and other apps are disabled. As for Rocket and Jet, I would not be surprised if these ended up as 3G/HSPA+ USB devices for laptops and netbooks. The Cliq 2 filing from earlier this month could be related to one of two Motorola devices coming later this year. You may recall the roadmap from July that showed Jordan and Begonia codenames tied to the handset maker. Both projects were due in November.
Anyone care to chime in with their own ideas as to what might be going down later this year?
