The Xperia Play is expected to run on Android 2.3, with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary Android skin.

A Playstation app will allow users to access the gaming function of the phone, with games controlled either using the built in gyroscope or the traditional Playstation buttons.

The phone also sports a 1GHz Snapdragon Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM.

Sony Ericsson has yet to name a launch date for the phone.

Both Sony Ericsson and Everything Everywhere said they ‘would not comment on rumours and speculation’.

Motorola’s revolutionary webtop application makes Motorola ATRIX the only smartphone to carry the power of mobile computing inside your pocket. Designed to bring unprecedented computing capabilities to your smartphone, Motorola’s webtop application runs a full Mozilla Firefox 3.6 browser and supports Adobe® Flash® Player to open up all the rich graphics, animations and video on the web. Motorola ATRIX includes a dual core processor with each core running at 1 GHz, delivering up to two GHz of processing power, and 1 GB of RAM. Put simply, Motorola ATRIX is the world’s most powerful smartphone.

“We want to empower individuals, giving them new ways to stay connected, informed and entertained at home, on the job and anywhere in between,” said Andrew Morley, vice president of marketing for Motorola Mobility, EMARA. “We are finding that consumers are increasingly using smartphones as their primary digital screens. Motorola ATRIX ushers in a new era in mobile computing and has the power to deliver on its promise to empower individuals as it comes loaded with the Motorola webtop application, which enables consumers to enhance the capabilities of their smartphones and simultaneously reduce their need for additional mobile computing screens.”

“We are proud to be the UK launch partner for Motorola ATRIX, a ground-breaking product that delivers on our ongoing commitment to offer customers the latest multimedia devices,” said Phil Roberson, director of Devices, Everything Everywhere, the company that runs Orange UK. “Motorola ATRIX offers our customers a new and exciting way to stay in touch with the people who matter the most to them.”

Motorola ATRIX is designed to essentially become a user’s primary digital hub to create, edit and enjoy documents, media and content. This is facilitated by Motorola’s webtop application and by the optional Motorola HD Multimedia Dock and Motorola Laptop Dock that provide users with a larger screen, keyboard and trackpad – enabling an enhanced and more interactive experience with their devices.

While in webtop, users are given a window into the smartphone that enables access to all of the device’s functionality within Android. Calls continue uninterrupted if Motorola ATRIX is removed from a dock. Plus, the new Entertainment Centre feature lets you show all of the photos, music and videos you already enjoy on-the-go on a big screen in your living room.

Motorola ATRIX provides consumers with instantaneous access to all their emails, files and media. While using the webtop application, business customers will benefit from the Citrix Receiver application for complete access to commercial desktop-licensed software. In addition to the full suite of office productivity and email applications, users can also access a great number of web applications such as Salesforce.com, Google Docs, and any HTML application or service from a full desktop browser.

Motorola ATRIX runs Android™ 2.2 with access to more than 100,000 apps and games in the Android Market™.

Motorola is highlighting two industry-leading companion docks for ATRIX:

The Motorola HD Multimedia Dock as three USB ports and an HDMI port enabling connections to a keyboard, mouse, speakers and HDMI-compatible monitor for working at your desk, or connecting to an HDMI-compatible television and home theater audio system for enjoying video, music, games and more.
The Motorola Laptop Dock has an incredibly thin design with an 11.6-inch screen, 36Wh three-cell battery that delivers up to eight hours of battery life, full keyboard, stereo speakers, and weighs just 1.1 kilograms. Users simply dock their Motorola ATRIX into the back for true mobility at work, at home and playing on the go in a form factor that’s lighter and smaller than most laptops on the market.

Key features and specifications:

A dual core processor capable of opening web pages twice as fast as most other smartphones, rendering games faster and displaying HD video on big-screen TVs
A full 1 GB of RAM for twice the RAM of most smartphones to deliver effortless multi-tasking, such as watching a movie while receiving and responding to email

Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award

Orange announced that Orange Wednesdays customers will now have a decisive say on who is nominated for the established Orange Rising Star Award, the only award at the Orange British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the British public.

This announcement comes at the same time as the call for the 2011 Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award recommendations goes out to all industry professionals, who are asked to put forward talent that they forecast to be stars of the future.

The role and purpose of the award for identifying talent destined for stardom will remain the same. The format will change to give

Orange Wednesdays customers the chance to have their say on the five nominations, which will then be voted on by the British public before the winner is crowned at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on 13th February 2011. To reflect the new role of the Orange Wednesdays customer, the award name has changed to the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award.

Orange has a long standing association with film through its hugely successful Orange Wednesdays initiative. This year the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award will strengthen that association further, bringing BAFTA and fans of the much-loved Orange Wednesdays closer together.

Finola Dwyer, Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Jury Chair, comments: “I am extremely pleased to be working with Orange on the Award this year. It is a truly credible award that opens up all avenues of opportunity to new talent and it is a fantastic way to bring new rising stars into the public eye.”

Andrew Pearcey, Head of Brand Sponsorships and Partnerships at Orange, comments: “This year, we really want to bring the excitement of the Orange BAFTAs to our Orange Wednesdays audience and this is the perfect opportunity to do that. Involving Orange Wednesdays customers in the decision making process ensures the award format remains fresh and relevant while continuing to shine the spotlight on film talent of the future. To support this initiative we also have more exciting plans to come throughout the BAFTA campaign, that will bring Orange Wednesdays cinema fans even closer to the glitz and glamour associated with the Orange British Academy Film Awards.”

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over 90 films before she died in 2004. Previous winners include James McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008, Noel Clarke in 2009 and Kristen Stewart in 2010.

The deadline for recommendations is Friday 1 October. For further information on last year’s Orange Rising Star Award go to orange.co.uk/bafta and then email your nomination to bafta2011@cakegroup.com

Beaches, boats and barns - UK offices get creative

A recent survey of 1,8171 Orange small and medium business customers has revealed more business owners working from locations better suited to their lifestyle. Almost nine out of ten (88%) businesses said that they now have the option to work away from the traditional office set up; with 74% of those choosing to work from home or a flexible workspace. This increasing workplace freedom has paved the way for new imaginative offices – with respondees citing the beach, a football ground, and even a barn at a diary farm as their alternative office.

Orange also found that 82% of business owners surveyed believe they are able to work as productively in a flexible workspace or at home compared to a traditional office. It seems this improved productivity - a result of flexible working, subsequently means that business owners can finish their work earlier with 55% of respondents working six hours or less a day.

In fact, over a third of respondents said they focus solely on work so they can finish earlier than they would working in an office and in order to do this the majority (46%) said they relied on a mobile or smartphone to work flexibly. This contrasted with the 26% who continue to work in an office and said their average day lasted at least eight to nine hours.

Martin Benson, owns MB Design and regularly works by email from a field says: “Working flexibly means I have more control over my time. While I spend half of my time working from home, the other half can be in all types of locations – usually a field in North Yorkshire. Working from home also means that I get to spend more time with my family. If my job was based in a city centre office, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to spend the quality of time I do with them. So rather than fitting family around work, I fit work around my family.”

The findings of the research mirror the outcome of Orange’s recent debate into the future of connectivity which found that ‘pub hubs’ could be the new home of flexible working. So enabling local venues (such as the village hall or local pub) to provide places for individuals to hot desk and in turn eliminating the work commute enabling people to use this time more productively.

Martin Lyne, SME Marketing Director, Everything Everywhere says, “When running a business, many dream of shorter more flexible working days with the hope of leading a better quality of life. Whilst there is no denying that setting up a company can involve a lot of blood, sweat, tears and time; what this research highlights is that small and medium business owners are able to work when it suits them and make the most of their free time. The Orange business customers that were surveyed felt that they were able to get a lot more done in the day, not only in terms of finishing their day earlier (or starting later), but by also having the option to mix work and daily chores throughout the day through working more flexibly.”

Orange launches Orange Integrate to give businesses better control over phone orders

Orange announced the launch of Orange Integrate – a secure purchasing solution for its large business customers, making it easier for them to manage their device fleet & employee mobility. With the product, employees can order new phones and accessories directly, choosing from a pre-authorised range, and a fully auditable approval process means peace of mind. Businesses can also save time and money by easily keeping control of the phones and accessories that are ordered.

Orange Integrate works by joining an organisation’s catalogue of Orange handsets and accessories with its existing eProcurement system in a single, easy to use platform. This means that customers can access their Orange product catalogue – which is hosted in a secure environment – using their own familiar systems.

Once the system is fully live, organisations can benefit from:

* Ability to choose the handsets and accessories
* Option to set the approval process for orders
* Option to choose who’s allowed to order what
* Opportunity to free up IT and purchasing resource
* No hold up with paper work or phone orders as the order goes direct to Orange

Michael Lawrence, Head of Corporate Propositions at Orange UK said, “Orange is committed to making it easier for our customers to manage their accounts the way they want to. Businesses looking to get the benefits of eProcurement for their mobile communications don’t necessarily need to make major investment to do so. By understanding the benefits of consolidating existing systems rather than having multiple systems, customers will feel the benefits by saving both time and money.”

Orange Integrate is an Orange-branded solution, which is hosted and managed by leading eCommerce provider ProcServe. It is compatible with most purchasing solutions such as SAP, Oracle, Ariba and Zanzibar and available from the Orange direct sales team.

Orange launches the UK's best value home broadband and calls packages

* Orange simplifies home broadband and calling with the introduction of a new best value pricing structure
* New unlimited anytime international calling bundle and ‘Peace of Mind’ promise also unveiled
* The new price plans form the first part of significant broadband evolution plan for Orange’s home broadband service over the next 18 months

Orange announced a range of new home broadband price plans to offer Orange mobile customers the UK’s best value broadband and calls. The move is the first in a home broadband evolution roadmap planned for the service over the next 18 months under newly appointed Vice President of Home, Bruno Duarte.

Spread across three price plans, the new packages make it simple for UK consumers to choose a home broadband package that’s right for them – and rewards Orange mobile customers with the best value for their loyalty.

From 17th September, the following three home broadband packages will be available from Orange:

1. Broadband & Off Peak Calls
For just £7.50 per month1, Orange mobile customers will receive up to 20Meg speeds and inclusive2 evening and weekend landline calls3 - ideal for those who are away during the day and have limited need to use the home phone before 6pm.

2. Broadband & Anytime Calls
For just £10 per month1, Orange mobile customers will receive up to 20Meg speeds on their home broadband and inclusive2 anytime landline calls3 – offering the best value bundle on the market.

3. Simply Broadband
For customers who just want to take advantage of Orange’s up to 20Meg wireless broadband, then Simply Broadband is only £10 per month.

Customers taking Orange’s ‘Broadband & Off Peak Calls’ or Orange’s ‘Broadband & Anytime Calls’ package, can also benefit from unlimited international landline calls to over 30 countries for only an extra £4 per month4.

Additionally, Orange has also introduced a new ‘Peace of Mind’ promise for hassle free set up - promising all new customers will be up and running within 10 working days, and if they’re not, they can end their contract within the month without any charge.

Bruno Duarte, Vice President of Home said: “We’re rewarding our existing mobile customers by giving them the UK’s best value home broadband on the market. When combined with the network and service improvements we’ve already made, and the plans to evolve our service over the next 18 months – there’s never been a better time to be on Orange”.

The move follows news earlier this year to significantly change how Orange delivers home broadband in the UK, as well as a range of new improvements made to enhance the customer experience. As a result, Orange’s home broadband service has already been short listed in three categories at this year’s Top-10 Broadband Awards - which includes the award for Best Value Home Broadband.

Additional inclusive benefits with all home broadband packages include:

* Free online protection – McAfee Family Protection plus parental control
* Unlimited downloads – So customers can surf and email to their heart’s content
* Free wireless router – Customers get a free top of the range ‘N’ class wireless router for the best speeds and range
* No connection fees – All customers pay is the monthly charge and line rental, with no extra fees

Non Orange mobile customers can also benefit from the great new plans from just an extra £5 per month5. Orange’s new home broadband deals will be available from the 17th September. For more information please visit www.orange.co.uk

UK’s biggest mobile coverage boost enables 30 million people to use phones in more places than ever before

Orange and T-Mobile to offer customers access to both networks at no extra cost as first benefit of newly merged company Everything Everywhere.

* Orange and T-Mobile customers invited to sign-up to get access to both networks to make calls and send texts in more places at no extra cost
* Billions of pounds of network infrastructure investment now instantly available to Orange and T-Mobile customers
* CEO Tom Alexander outlines vision for a 'multinet' future, combining mobile, wifi and fixed technologies to deliver an unrivalled experience for consumers

Everything Everywhere, the UK’s biggest communications company, announced the first consumer benefit of the merger between Orange and T-Mobile, opening up its two mobile networks to customers of both brands. Available to almost half of the UK population, the move marks the start of the single, biggest improvement of network coverage since the birth of mobile.

From 5th October, 30 million customers – the combined customer base of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK - will be offered the opportunity to access both networks, enabling them to make calls and send texts in more places in the UK for no extra cost.

Tom Alexander, CEO of Everything Everywhere – the company that runs Orange and T-Mobile - said: “This is the beginning of an ambitious plan to give our customers instant access to whatever they want, wherever they are – instant access to everything everywhere.

“From next month, we will give almost half of the British population the opportunity to use their phones in more places than ever before. As well as continuing to benefit from their existing network, Orange customers will be able to make calls and send texts on the T-Mobile network and T-Mobile customers will be able to do the same using the Orange network. This is the first major consumer benefit of the merger between Orange and T-Mobile, and it delivers an unrivalled and unique experience that no other operator can offer.

“Until now, the industry has been working in a single network environment. We have a vision of a ‘multinet’ world where the consumer will be able to access what they want, when they want, at the touch of a button. It will all be possible due to a complex system of interweaving multiple networks, bringing mobile, wifi and fixed technologies together to act as a super network.”

Customers who sign up for access to both networks will benefit free of charge, with no changes to their existing tariffs or call or text charges. Once registered, should a customer lose signal on their existing network, they will then automatically pick up the signal from the other network where it’s available, meaning that they can make and receive calls and texts in more places than ever before.

Everything Everywhere’s ambition is to provide all Orange and T-Mobile customers with the best network experience in the UK, with the best network capacity, reach, speeds and coverage available.

Next year customers can expect benefits such as automatically switching to whichever of the two networks has the strongest signal while they’re mid-call, and enhanced data and internet coverage.

Customers from either network who want to sign up to benefit from the initial network improvements should register their interest at either www.t-mobile.co.uk/share or www.orange.co.uk/share. Mobile customers including pay as you go, pay monthly and business can sign-up to enjoy the benefits of access to both mobile networks.

Orange to enable up to £300m savings for the UK healthcare market with launch of Orange Health Gateway

* Continued healthcare drive through NHS approved messaging platform
* Modular service designed to allow better patient care and more effective internal resourcing through improved communications
* Opportunity to improve attendance rates, free up appointment slots and cut the cost of missed appointments by up to 38%
* Easier communications with patients and employees through familiar, everyday medium of mobile

Orange announced the launch of its second new service specifically aimed at the UK healthcare sector. The Orange Health Gateway allows hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies to use mobile communications to transform patient services and become more efficient through a selection of two-way messaging modules.

The Orange Health Gateway can help every healthcare organisation get messages to patients and employees quickly and easily, whether to remind them of upcoming appointments, improve the communication of test results, speed up the resourcing of replacement nurses or improve patient adherence to medication. The applications are available through a simple, secure web environment, which allows mobile technology to become an integral part of the way healthcare providers communicate with patients and employees.

Orange Health Gateway powered by iPLATO

The Orange Health Gateway is available as a series of modules that can be selected to meet healthcare customers’ specific needs.

The Appointment Reminders module enables organisations to send timely, personalised appointment reminders to patients and manage cancellations and confirmations, which could reduce the number of wasted appointment slots by up to 38%1. With missed appointments estimated to be costing the NHS £790 million per year2, this module alone could lead to savings of £300 million per year. Appointment Reminders has a very low start-up cost and can be deployed within days.

Additional Messaging modules from the Orange Health Gateway can also enable healthcare providers to:

* Track and communicate routine medical results to patients
* Distribute emergency contact messages to employees in case of an incident
* Send and receive employee messages to help with effective resourcing, particularly when reaching out to contract staff
* Send out bespoke messages by working with Orange and iPLATO to create a tailored solution for their specific needs, for example creating automated messages for employees or patients

Michael Lawrence, Head of Corporate Propositions at Orange UK said, “Orange Health Gateway offers the healthcare sector the opportunity to improve patient services and deliver real savings by capitalising on the everyday use of mobile. It enables healthcare providers to make better use of time and resources, at a time when efficiency gains are front of mind. As well as helping to provide excellent patient care through shorter waiting lists and quicker updates, healthcare organisations can also transform their entire communications system, proving that technology and partnerships can enable real change. With minimal management commitments combined with maximum efficiency and cost savings, Orange Health Gateway will ease the lives of patients and professionals across the healthcare sector alike.

“Orange Health Gateway comes hot on the heels of our first healthcare solution in the UK, Orange smartnumbers, and demonstrates the Orange commitment, as part of Everything Everywhere, to providing the very best products and services for all types of businesses”.

iPLATO Healthcare powers the Orange Health Gateway, as well as providing professional services to help healthcare organisations launch and evolve their eHealth services. The platform is hosted on N3 and complies with the NHS’s data security and information government requirements.

London, UK - Orange and Nokia announced a new integrated Ovi service that widens the developer ecosystem and gives Orange customers using Nokia handsets easier access to more content. Orange is integrating Ovi content with the best of its apps from the Orange Application Shop to give customers simpler, more secure access to a wider range of content and services, creating one easy and seamless experience. Nokia's Ovi Store with Orange will be accessible by Orange customers in the UK and France in 2011.

Orange is working with Nokia to create a single sign-on for customers on a range of new handsets that simplifies the registration and purchasing process. Orange first to launch mobile High Definition Voice for UK businesses - the biggest advance in calls in twenty years

Hearing is believing: business conversations on the move and in noisy environments just got easier with crystal clear calls
75% of business owners stated clear call quality to be the most important functionality of their mobile device
33% of business owners say they constantly struggle to hold phone conversations in noisy environments

Orange announces the biggest advance in voice calls in 20 years with the launch of its mobile High Definition (HD) Voice service, enabling businesses to benefit from the next era in mobile communications. Increased call clarity and the filtering out of background noise make important business conversations possible no matter where they are conducted.

Call clarity has emerged as a necessity for many businesses. Recent research* from Orange has shown that 75% of business owners believe clear call quality to be the most important aspect of their mobile device; with 33% saying they routinely struggled to hold phone conversations due to the noisy environment they work in. With HD Voice, neither a noisy work environment or being out of the office are barriers to a successful call with customers, colleagues or suppliers.

Orange HD Voice also eliminates the perceived distance between callers making it easier to hear the emotions in people’s voices. According to the research, this is seen as crucial with 80% of business owners stating that it is very important to hear people’s emotions when conducting a conversation. Almost one in five (18%) even admitted that they had lost a deal because of a misunderstanding over the phone as they couldn’t hear what was being said.

HD Voice also opens up new opportunities for better ways of working in business. In addition to benefitting industries with significant background noise like construction and manufacturing, the arrival of HD Voice is hotly anticipated by the broadcasting industry, which believes that the service could reduce both its reliance on expensive ISDN lines and the need to ferry guests to studios for interviews.

The BBC is trialling the solution as a low cost alternative to the traditional methods of live contribution for both its reporters and potentially for guests and to improve the sound quality for breaking news reports which will often be done using a mobile phone.

Robert Ayres, Raycox Turf, said, “Having trialled HD Voice for a number of weeks, I was impressed by the difference it made to my phone calls. The ability to have a faultless call experience regardless of where I was made important business conversations that much easier and meant I didn’t have to worry about being in a quiet space to make any calls.”

Martin Stiven, VP of Business at Everything Everywhere, the company which runs Orange UK, said: “HD Voice is going to change the way businesses are able to communicate through our business mobiles from conducting calls in places that were not previously possible to the ability to hear emotions in people’s voices. We’re about bringing people closer together and HD Voice does just that, making business colleagues feel as if they’re speaking face to face. People are going to love the clarity of calls and the lack of background noise. Once you’ve used it, you will want to keep it.”

HD Voice for business is now available on the Nokia E5 and the Samsung Omnia Pro B7350 handsets with more HD enabled handsets to follow in the coming months.

What is Orange HD Voice?

Andrew Warner, Head of Mobile Voice & Messaging Products at Orange, describes Orange HD Voice.

Crystal clear calling as Orange revolutionises UK mobile phone calls with the launch of High Definition Voice

Orange becomes the first operator to launch mobile HD Voice in the UK, signalling the dawn of a new era in mobile communications for customers
HD Voice reduces background noise and decreases perceived distance between callers by providing crystal clear calls
HD Voice is available from today nationwide at no extra cost for all Orange customers with an HD voice enabled handset

Orange today announced the first major advancement in UK mobile voice calling for 20 years with the launch of mobile High Definition (HD) Voice. Providing crystal clear sound quality for calls, mobile users will see the service set a new consumer benchmark, with today’s move testament to Orange’s continuing focus on innovation.

HD Voice offers a proven improvement in the sound quality of traditional mobile voice calls. The service eliminates the distance between friends, relatives and colleagues to make callers voices sound like they do when communicating face to face. Reducing the background noise, hisses and crackles of normal mobile calls, HD Voice also excels in noisy environments, so whether you’re at a football match or concert, on a building site or next to heavy traffic - HD Voice gives louder, clearer, sharper mobile calls. This will come as a relief for a third (32%) of Brits who blame background noise including road works or noisy chatty friends as the biggest disturbance in conversations*.

Orange HD Voice is available at no extra cost to all Orange mobile customers who take a HD Voice enabled handset. From launch, new variants of the Nokia 5230, Nokia X6, Nokia E5 and Samsung Omnia Pro will be HD Voice enabled with further manufactures expected to offer HD handsets in the coming months. All HD Voice enabled handsets will be labelled with the Orange HD Voice logo, helping customers to easily recognise those devices that support the new Orange HD Voice service. HD Voice demonstration units will also be available in Orange shops.

Tom Alexander, Chief Executive of Everything Everywhere, the company which runs Orange UK, said: “Although what we use our mobile handsets for has evolved significantly in the past few years - the way we make mobile calls hasn’t changed a great deal since the 1990s. So we’re proud to be the first telecommunications brand in the UK to change this and offer customers a revolutionary new calling experience. With mobile HD Voice - hearing really is believing”.

HD Voice also opens up new opportunities for better ways of working in business. The arrival of HD Voice is hotly anticipated by the broadcasting industry, which believes that the service could reduce its reliance on expensive ISDN lines and the need to ferry guests to studios for interviews. Other industries that will benefit significantly from HD Voice include those with significant background noise like the construction and manufacturing industries.

Orange: FroYo Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire “delayed”

Uh-oh! Orange’s official representative on Twitter has just issued a little bit of bad news for HTC Desire owners who bought their phones through the network – the Android 2.2 update for the popular Android phone has been pushed back until mid-September.

Apparently there’s been a delay in getting the update from HTC, whatever that may mean. Someone didn’t check their emails? Here’s the little announcement:

“Android fans there has been a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC, & we now expect it to be available mid-Sep. Apologies”

And as a quick follow up:

“would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device”
