Yahoo Mobile - Weather

Yahoo OneSearch aka Mobile Search is now offering new and improved weather forecast. Not surprised here since they powered iPhone's Weather Widget. Now you can get the same forecast on most phones over browser. I normally bookmark Google's mobile search result for NY 10011 zone, but will test this out on my Treo 680 or N95-3 next time I have the SIM card in there.

BTW - Yahoo GO! Application now includes Olympic 2008 updates, including medal counts.

Microsoft Joins Google and Yahoo in Mobile Banner Ads

Microsoft announced they will be launching mobile banner ads to advertisers interested in reaching customers using mobile Hotmail and Messenger. This is a natural progression for Microsoft to continue its pursuit to compete with Google in two playing fields: Mobile and Advertising. While Google's mobile advertising model is based on a more open-ended network (Adsense publishers can be anyone), Microsoft's staple of users on Messenger and Hotmail is pretty sizable in itself. In addition, its mobile operating system has had a first mover advantage with a large user base.

My only concern is if Microsoft can deliver a solid mobile ad platform with reliability and usability for its advertisers. As a paid search marketer, we find the user interface with Microsoft's search engine advertising to be a bit cumbersome. When compared to Google's adwords platform, it just doesn't feel as intuitive and easy to use. If Microsoft is to be taken seriously in its mobile advertising effort, they should focus on this area.

Microsoft will now join Google, Yahoo, Third Screen Media and AdMob to the mobile advertising space.

Yahoo's Popular Mobile Searches

Yahoo Go 3.0 Beta Review on Nokia N95

Couple days ago, I wrote about Yahoo Go 3.0 Beta being available. I took the time to install it on my Nokia N95 and here is my review:

Installation: Simple. The hardest part is to type in the hard to remember URL into your mobile broswer (get.go.yahoo.com). I would recommend an easier URL like yaho.com/go. My 3G data downloaded the 99K file in less than 10 seconds and installation took place in less than 45 seconds when I chose to install on the phone memory.

Application: Not bad. This application is designed to encompass a suite of "web-widgets". (including: Y! News, Mail, Finance, Sports, Flickr, Weather, Entertainment, Local, etc.). It also has the option to download three additional widgets for MTV News, eBay and MySpace. I played around with most of the programs and they are up to the basic tasks. Althouh having the widgets inside an application felt less robust than its true potential. Not sure if this is a bad software design or too demanding for the N95's already pushed CPU (ARM 11 333MHz). I can see myself relying on the eBay widget to check on my auction listings as it would offer a better mobile eBay experience for me compared to the browser option.

Overall verdict is that I give props to Yahoo for rolling all of its core services into one nifty application/widget pack. The main page carousal has a great widgety feel to it. I still believe that the future of mobile will be relying heavily on powerful and robust apps or widgets. If Yahoo can improve the speed and efficiency of the program (much like iPhone's default widgets), we may have a serious contender here.

Yahoo does offer another URL for iPhone or WM5/6 and S60 devices that is web-based. The URL is beta.m.yahoo.com. This is an update to its original Mobile homepage, the look and feel is much like Google's mobile homepage.

Yahoo GO 3.0 Beta Released

Got an email from Yahoo! today. Annoucing the beta version of Yahoo! GO 3.0. It is compatile with iPhone, WM5/6 and Nokia S60 devices. Yahoo! GO is composed of an array of web services designed for your handheld device (Maps, Mail, Messenger, etc.). In addition, there are some 3rd party mobile widgets available for download (MTV News, eBay, etc.) I'll give it a go and report back shortly. (Note the Nokia N95 8GB used in the photo... sweet!)

Yahoo Mobile Search Panel Invite

These days, the buzz in mobile is nothing new. I can already see industry tradeshows (Adweek, SES, etc.) using mobile as the major buzz word for the next couple of years. In a race that is as intense as the race to the moon, the search giants are trying to get as much leverage as they can to take pole position.

Yahoo GO! recently invited me to participate in a survey which would qualify me to become their mobile search panel. Evidently, being "their panel" gives me an opportunity to be heard. In translation, I'll help them refine their mobile offering for free. Considering my nature in exploring all things mobile, I graciously signed up for the survey. 15 minutes later, I was told that I should expect something in the inbox shortly for more instructions.

As it stands, most of the Google mobile products are reigning supreme. I've not used Yahoo products since the early days (circa 2004-05). I hope these initiatives will help the overall mobile community to grow as a whole.

I will provide more updates later (assuming I am allowed to do so). Of course, if you don't hear from me, it could also mean that I am not allowed to disclose.
