On my way to pickup some fresh groceries today at the Chelsea Market Place, I dropped by the Apple Store in the Meatpacking district. As expected, both the 8GB and 16GB iPhones are still out of stock. The friendly staff said there had been a couple of shipments but were sold off quickly. I couldn't get anything out of the staff as to what is happening but she did grin and suggested that there are some reasonable rumors floating around.
