YouTube app for Nokia and Windows Mobile phones

One year ago, Google launched the YouTube Mobile app for Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile and the software grew and expanded since then. Today, we’re meeting the 2.4 version of the app complete with tons of improvements. Windows Mobile to Get Flash Lite

Microsoft has finally inked a deal with Adobe for the Flash Lite support in mobile IE along with PDF-support. With Flash Lite, YouTube video support may be in the near future for all of you Windows Mobile 6 folks as well as handling webpages running SWF files. While this is nice, I am generally not a big fan of Flash technology. It has a been a kind of a nightmare for online marketing folks since inception. SWF files are nice to look at but offers zero visibility from an SEO standpoint. Furthermore, SWF renders eCommerce sites useless because you can't send customers directly to a section or allowing bookmark for a specific page. Personally, I would like to see more support in the area for JAVA and AJAX, allowing a Web2.0-like interaction over smartphones.

Other news: Microsoft is on schedule to bring out Silverlight to Windows Mobile. Silverlight is a flash-like solution competing with Flash Lite.

Two YouTube Solutions for N95 (S60 OS)

My latest addiction is hitting up a blog known as Symbian Addict. This blog is a great resource to learn all about phones running the Symbian OS (ie. Nokia N95, etc.).

I came across two YouTube solutions from this site:

1. Google/YouTube Application. (Point your browser to: m.youtube.com/app) Detailed video at Symbian Addict
2. emTube (Go Direct) Symbian Addict claims to be the best YouTube S60 solution out right now

I will test both out and report back. Its a pretty exciting times for the Smartphones right now. Firms are making excellent/robust applications left and right.

Update (1/28 11:00PM): Used N95 and pointed to the Google/YouTube link above and a download started instantly. Within 10 seconds, the phone finished downloading a program roughly 500KB+ onto phone's memory. Within a minute, the installation process completed. The software worked flawlessly. The only thing you have to do in advance is to designate a network for your Real Player application first (in my case - MediaNet) as YouTube is using it to stream. I tested out this video using the search function and it was all good. The software is very Web 2.0 like, with a very smooth cover-flow-ish effect when browsing through videos. I like it a lot!

Moodle Presentation: feedback needed

The past few weeks have really been busy for me, so I don't get nearly as much time to blog as I'd like to :( But today I'm really excited about the fact that I can finally share a Moodle presentation that I've been working on for some time. The presentation will be used at the first Moodle Moot in Slovenia that my faculty is organizing on May 18th. The plan is to have the video play during the conference (at the beginning or/and during coffee breaks), and also include a copy on the conference CD that our attendees will get after the conference.

Digital Ethnography group on YouTube

Remember the Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us video that presented the Web 2.0 concept under 5 minutes (I also posted it on my blog)? It got a lot of (deserved) attention in the edu blogosphere and recently the final version of the video was posted on YouTube. As it seems, we can expect more great videos like this from the Digital Ethnography group, guided by Michael Wesch at the Kansas State University. They've just released a new video: Introducing our YouTube Ethnography Project, in which the students and their professor present themselves and invite all of us to interact with them through YouTube. Take a look:

I think their project is a really interesting one - not just for the fields of ethnography and anthropology. For educators that are exploring possible uses of technology in education this project is a great example of what a powerful tool Web 2.0 has become. These students are now able to interact with a global audience and get valuable feedback on their work from all around the world in different media formats. Wow! All I can say is - thumbs up for the Digital Ethnography group! I hope to see (and also participate in) more projects like this in the future.
