More Evidence of a New iPod Touch Emerging

Its not like I needed to beat this dead horse any further or wanted more proof about a new iPod in the horizon. At this point, pretty much all the media outlet is speculating a new iPod Touch w/ Camera and Mic to be revealed on Apple's 9/9 Rock and Roll media event.

But if you would like more proof, take a look around the top iPod accessories makers' websites and you'll noticed something in common. Either they are slashing prices on the 2nd gen. iPod Touch cases or simply running out of stock. Its not an uncommon practice for businesses to reduce inventory by lowering prices to move items that is soon to be outdated; screenshots included to support my theory:

Griffin - Most of the 2nd Gen. iPod Touch cases are offered at "Special" Pricing

Incase - Their popular Slider case as well as others pull up error 404 not found (out of stock?)

Speck - is offering a 25% off pricing on every iPod Touch 2nd Gen and Nano 4th gen.

With PS3 Slim Price Cut, XBOX Heats Things Up

Microsoft isn't about to take the video game war lying down. With the PS3 80GB Classic and the hot new PS3 Slim 120GB coming out with a price reduction down to $299, the XBOX camp is throwing you the Elite edition for a price cut of $299. While the good 'ole XBOX can't playback the Blu Ray discs, having Netflix streaming is a very nice plus+

Whats your Mobile Internet Data usage?

Lately, it seems like everywhere you look, the topic of unlimited internet usage "cap" seems to pop up and upset the general public either for your smartphone or home broadband. While I find it as much oxymoron calling a plan "unlimited" data with a cap as the next guy, I was curious to find out just exactly how much unlimited data I was using up, the results are not that extreme (approx.):
July: 89MB
June: 76MB
May: 114MB
April: 125MB
March: 63MB
I am using an iPhone 3G with AT&T's $30 unlimited data plan (w/ a 5GB cap). I use my iPhone in the morning and afternoon to get the latest news and check on emails. Occasionally throughout the day, I'd check on emails, weather or directions/maps. I find myself using the mobile internet more when I am out of the house (waiting for an appoint), out of town(business trip) or on vacation. I'm kinda curious to know how many of you actually come close to the 5GB cap because you stream live music via Pandora or listen to MLB broadcast through respective apps. Furthermore, if you are a Palm Pre, Android user, what is your monthly data usage?

Some interesting data I found on the web:
Hong Kong: average 44MB per user (as of April, 2009)
UK Orange: mobile data doubled year over year (as of May, 2009)
Sweden: increase 4.5x year over year (as of Aug, 2009)
Australia: iPhone Browser avg session is 2.07MB vs. 0.30MB (as of Sept, 2008)

Use iPhone Google Maps to Add or Manage Contacts

When it comes to managing my contacts, I would say I am pretty obsessed. Because of my iPhones, I've been keeping my Apple Address Book up to date. The reason I am so obsessed with contacts management is because it really gives your smartphone that extra flexibility and reliability when you are on the go; as you are out and about, its absolutely important to have a person's phone, email or address handy and maximize your smartphone's built-in function to call, send mail and pin point their GPS destinations.

One of the handy little functions on your iPhone or iPod Touch's GMAP can help you add contacts to your address book quickly. Saves me quite a bit of time from copying/pasting or re-typing the contact info which is prone to error. Simply search for a person, establishment, restaurant or landmark and click on the arrow to expand to full detailed disclosure of their information. From there, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Add to Contacts". This will give you the option to "Create a New Contact" or "Add to Existing Contact" if you already have partial information. Either choices will give you the option to edit to your liking. Screenshots here is showing me adding one of my favorite Hoboken Sandwich joint Vito's to a group of contacts I created just for my favorite take outs!

Surefire E2D Flashlights are pretty sweet gadgets!

I've been looking around for a compact flashlight that is both functional and offers cutting edge technology and a friend of mine introduced me to Surefire lights. These little guys have been doing some amazing stuff for the flashlight industry. In my heart, there will always be a place for my trusty Maglites but when it comes to the newer LED technology, Surefire sure looks amazing.

The E2D Defender series having been catching my eyes as it offers a mobile and durable solution while powered by a strong LED module. At time of writing Amazon offers two models, a 65-Lumens version (E2d-BK) for about $109 and a 120-Lumens version (E2DL-BK LED) for $149. Both lights are extremely bright and capable of leaving an intruder temporarily disoriented if they stared into the lights. Being part of defender series, Surefire E2Ds are made of aerospace grade aluminum and military grade anodized finish; also included are strike bezels for personal defense. Both units are powered by Surefire SF123A 3-volt lithium batteries which has an amazing shelf life of 10 years.

Costco getting in the Unlocked Cell Phone Biz?

Just noticed an offering from a Costco email tonight, apparently they've started to sell unlocked Nokia smartphones. Clicking through the email link, the page pulled up four smartphones:
N97 ($599)
E75 ($419)
5800 ($299)
E63 ($229)
The deals are not bad but certainly not the best price we've seen.

Nokia plans to launch mobile 'banking'

Nokia's first touch screen phone, the Nokia 5800, seen here in January 2009. Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, will launch a service enabling people to make financial transactions with their cell phones, the Finnish telecoms giant said Wednesday.

Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, will launch a service enabling people to make financial transactions with their cell phones, the Finnish telecoms giant said Wednesday.

The "Nokia Money" service will make it possible "to send money to another person just by using the person's mobile phone number, as well as to pay merchants for goods and services, pay their utility bills, or recharge their pre-paid SIM cards," the company said in a statement.

The service, available 24 hours a day, will be rolled out from early 2010.

Nokia said it was building up a large network of Nokia Money agents where consumers can deposit money or withdraw cash from their mobile accounts.

"We believe mobile financial services offer a market opportunity with long term growth potential," Nokia's chief development officer, Mary McDowell, said in the statement.

"In many countries, mobile phone ownership significantly exceeds bank account usage," she said noting that there are more than four billion mobile phone users worldwide compared to 1.6 billion bank accounts.

Nokia is the world's biggest manufacturer of mobile phones with a 38 percent market share. It is racing to diversify its operations as its rivals Apple and Research in Motion experience raging successes with their respective "smartphones", the iPhone and the Blackberry.

The Finnish company announced earlier this week the launch of its first mini-laptop, a highly-competitive sector currently in development.

China iPhone launch plans due this week

.
China Unicom and computer giant Apple are to announce plans by the end of the week to sell a stripped down iPhone without Wi-Fi in China, the world's biggest mobile market, local media said Thursday.

The two companies have reached an agreement on major issues including prices and order volumes, Caijing magazine reported on its website, citing an unnamed source close to the negotiations.

The eight-gigabyte and 16-gigabyte iPhones could be sold as early as September, with their wireless Internet functions disabled in compliance with a Chinese ban on the device, the report said.

The government opposes phones equipped with Wi-Fi out of fear that state-owned telecoms companies will lose revenue due to the large number of free wireless hotspots in the country, according to analysts.

The iPhone is likely to be priced starting at 2,999 yuan (439 dollars) with a requirement that customers also buy 3,000 yuan worth of pre-paid calls, the report said.

China Unicom, the smaller rival of China's largest wireless operator China Mobile, started iPhone negotiations with Apple after the government issued third-generation, or 3G, mobile phone licences in January.

A Beijing-based Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the report when contacted by AFP, while China Unicom officials were not immediately available for comment.

China is one of the last major markets where the iPhone has yet to go on sale.

But consumers here have not waited for Apple. Analysts have said the country is the world's biggest market for smuggled, "unlocked" and counterfeited iPhones.

Book: Android Wireless Application Development

Couple weeks ago, I made a bold statement to which I believe Google's Android will ultimately win out the mobile OS war; I still believe that statement which is why I think this book will help anyone who agrees with me to get a head start. Android Wireless Application Development is dubbed as "the start-to-finish guide to Android development–from concept to market!" Sounds like just the book to help anyone to get their hands wrapped around the hottest new mobile apps marketplace. The book is to be released tomorrow (8/27/2009) and retails for $45 ($30 shipped on Amazon).

The excerpt from Publisher:
Android Wireless Application Development combines all the reliable information, sample code, and best practices you need to build, distribute, and market successful Android mobile applications. Drawing on their extensive experience with mobile and wireless development, Shane Conder and Lauren Darcey cover everything you need to execute a successful Android project: from concept and design through coding, testing, packaging, and delivery.

Conder and Darcey explain how mobile development differs from conventional development, how Android differs from other mobile platforms, and how to take full advantage of Android’s unique features and capabilities. They present detailed, code-rich coverage of Android’s most important APIs, expert techniques for organizing development teams and managing Android projects, and dozens of time-saving tricks and pitfalls to avoid.

Free NYC Subway Map iPhone / iPod Touch Apps

When the iPhone app store first arrived on the scene, I remember spending $2.99 for an Official NYC Subway Transit map application on my wife's iPhone. This is a necessity because as soon as you go below ground level, you'd lose all cell phone signal so you need a map that is already loaded on your handset. I was too stingy to pay it twice for my iPhone so I had been searching for some work around solution. For smartphones that support saving PDF files or image files w/o supressing its quality this is a no brainer. To make a long story short, I failed to find an iPhone work around w/o exhaustive effort; for the most part, iPhone's default ability to supress image quality pretty much ruins every detailed map I created. The only work around requires this clever "album" where each image becomes tiles of the five borough.

Recently, my buddy Dan introduced two applications which worked great, and both are FREE of charge!

The applications are: NYC Subway Map (by Gotham Wave Games) and NYC Subway Map KICKMAP (by KICK Design). In my opinion, both applications features a more intuitive map than the NY Transit maps which can help tourists understand the difference between local and express stops better. While other paid maps may offer fancy things such as service advisory or a time table, these two maps serves the basic purpose of showing you the stops. I am quite pleased with these two applications. While I find the map load time during scrolling (going from blurry state to clear) a bit slow, it sure beats not having a map on my iPhone. I wish they would draw up a NYC bus map that overlays the subway map so I have the option to review the closest bus stop for connecting a commute.

Overall, these apps are fabulous and they simply worked as well as provided a solution of not having access to data network underground. It sure beats having to make my way over inside a subway cart and ask people to move out of the way to read the small map hanging on the wall.

Nokia N900 press shot trickles onto the interwebs

See that image up above? Looks like our mockups from waaaaay back in May were about as spot on as it gets - though the in-the-flesh shots from a few days ago already proved that.

Though there’s not much left to be revealed at this point, the fact that the above promo shot is all wrapped up and being leaked further cements the idea that Nokia will be announcing the N900 at Nokia World in just a little over a week. It’s also the first time we’ve seen the “N900″ text appear on the device, indicating that that’ll be the name it hits the shelves with. Remember folks: this one’s supposed to be heading to T-Mobile USA and be just as much of a phone as it is a fancypants internet tablet, so keep an eye on it.

Leaked Samsung S3650 Corby pictures

What’s black, yellow, red, and just a wee bit ugly all over? If you guessed the Samsung S3650 Corby, good job! We also would have accepted “Clint Howard wearing a bumblebee suit and a red fedora.”

The Corby, pictured here, rides that fine line between “Budget featurephone” and “Phone you’ll still like 6 months from now” quite well. Its got quad-band GSM, a 2.8″ QVGA touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, a 2MP camera, and FM radio. Alas, it’s all packed behind Samsung’s proprietary OS running TouchWiz to the core, so what you see up front is pretty much what you get - at least until Samsung launches TouchWiz widget downloads, that is. Rumors pin this thing at around $200 sans contract, though no price has been officially confirmed.

MINI brings roadside assistance into the 21st century with mobile app

Drive a MINI? Have an iPhone or Blackberry? Well then, you are in luck my friend. MINI has recently released a free app, MINI Roadside Assistance, to better assist its customers in times of need.

Should your street legal go-kart break down, be involved in an accident, blow a tire, or suffer some other incident while you are out motoring, MINI Roadside Assistance will use your device’s GPS and your vehicle’s unique identification number (VIN) to help expedite, um, roadside assistance. All the user has to do is launch the app and hit the “call” button.

While it sounds rather simple (although not quite as easy as OnStar’s automatic accident detection and alert system), simplicity is key in emergency situations…every second counts.

On a lighter note, the app not only provides direct roadside connection and vehicle location info, but it also includes other services/info regarding your MINI’s battery, tires, fuel, mechanical troubles, or lock-out situations.

The MINI Roadside Assistance (iTunes link) app is free for MINI owners (technically, it’s free for anyone, but offers zero functionality if you are MINI-less) and works alongside the free roadside assistance service while your MINI is still under warranty. (However, if you don’t have a MINI, but you are a AAA member, there is a similar app, AAA Roadside (iTunes link), available for the iPhone.) For more on MINI Roadside Assistance, check out the FAQ.

Happy Motoring!

Android Developer Challenge 2 open for submissions

Android Developer ChallengeThe time has come! The submission site for Android Developer Challenge 2 is now open. You can now submit applications for the Challenge at http://market.android.com/adc. Full instructions are also available on the site.

The key thing to remember is that all submissions must be entered by 11:59:59pm Pacific Time in the United States on August 31, 2009. If your applications are not submitted by that time, they won't be eligible for participation. Please carefully note what time that is in your local time zone.

It's very important that your apps only use published APIs. Some users might be judging your submissions on new phones you haven't seen or tested. If your apps depend on unpublished APIs, they might not work on some of these phones. Please note that you won't be able to submit new versions of your apps after the deadline!

Since you'll be competing against developers around the world for users' attention, it is important to focus on the fit and finish of your app. Your apps will be judged by users as a final product and not just a cool demo.

As a final note, if you've uploaded a version of your app to Android Market, you'll need to use a different Android package name for the version you submit to the Challenge.

I look forward to see all the great apps and innovations from you all.

Seiko 5 Automatic Watch w/ Black Ion Finish

Wristwatches, in my opinion, is one of the coolest mobile gadget. It comes in all flavors and can be as simple as telling time to Temperature, Barometric Pressure, Moon Phase, Chronometer, Speed, Calculator, Phonebook and lots more...

One of the classic technology is the use of automatic movement (aka mechanical watch) that self-winds and keeps time w/o the use of battery. Such movement typically would cost a watch collector at minimum $500 to get an entry level grade. This is what makes Seiko 5 watches so fascinating.

The Seiko 5 series watches are entry level mechanical watches known for its simple elegance and reliability. The Seiko 5 watches are named as such because of its five basic functionalities: 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. The best part is that they are often a 21 or 23 jewel movement and comes within the range of $60 to $300+. The only challenge is they are hard to find within the U.S.

When I came across this watch from Amazon (actually sold by Amazon which includes free shipping a 3 year warranty), I had to give it a shout-out. This Automatic Black Ion Plated Watch #SNZD15 is considered to be a bit higher end then your typical Seiko 5 watch. It has a slightly larger 40mm face and offers a unique Black Ion finish on its metal casing and bracelet. While it isn't a true diver's watch (water depth up to 99 ft.) it does give that diver's watch style. For anyone who's interested in starting a collection in wristwatch, I would highly consider this model as it offers quite a bit of features and functionality w/o having to pay through the roof on pricing. At the asking price of $262 shipped, you'll get a high quality Japanese Automatic Movement and Seiko endurance.

Amazon takes PS3 Slim Pre-Order

If you can't wait much longer, Amazon is now taking pre-orders of the new slim 120GB PS3. According to a highly possible rumor, they will likely to ship these new PS3s a few days earlier on 8/26 than the previously noted 9/11/2009 release date. Happy gaming!
