O2 has announced it will partner with navigation service provider Telmap to offer GPS tracking for its customers.
O2 says the Telmap application, which offers 3D mapping, traffic alerts and turn by turn voice notifications, will be available on the “majority” of O2 GPS compatible handsets from this Autumn.
Other features will include users with the option to receive local information on businesses, ticketing details and restaurants.
The service will be available for download to both new and existing customers and will be available as part of a number of packages starting from £3.50 per month. Contract customers can have the monthly fee added to their monthly subscription fee.
Customers will be given a 14-day trial to decide if they wish to take up any subscription.
O2 marketing director Peter Rampling said: “This is a pioneering agreement between operator and application developer which we believe will set a benchmark for future agreements.
“We have worked closely with Telmap to build a service wrap around the application which we believe will offer the best customer experience. Navigation is fast becoming one of the most popular mobile services and we look forward to bringing this leading application to our customers.”
Telmap chief executive Oren Nissim said: “This is a very important agreement for Telmap and we are excited to be starting this relationship with O2.
“There is a strong synergy between O2, a leading, innovative operator and Telmap’s innovative technology and vast experience; we believe this collaboration will allow us to deliver the best in class solution to O2 customers and for O2 to create a winning location strategy in the marketplace.”
