Taiwan-based carrier Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) will procure 19,000 thin-client IP set-top boxes (STBs) from open-bid winner HwaCom Systems in combination with Pegatron Technology for its MOD (multimedia on demand) platform, according to CHT.
As compared with regular IP STBs, the thin-client model has no other functions than watching movies and TV and is intended to extend MOD services from living rooms to other parts of the family, CHT said.
It is the first time that CHT has procured thin-client STBs, and the carrier hopes some of its MOD subscribers are willing to have a second STB and even a third.
HwaComm is a Taiwan-based provider of networking/telecom integration services, while Pegatron is a Taiwan-based EMS (electronics manufacturing service) provider.
