AT&T iPhone 3G Dropped Calls...

Generally speaking, I don't use my iPhone for too many voice calls, hence I have a bunch of rollover minutes on my account. That said, I was rushing out of the office last night at around 5:15PM but had to jump on a conference call, I was dropped 3 times from the conference call. Not sure what is going on but I find that experience extremely irritating. Stumble acrossed this article about iPhone Switchers in which the executive editor of GigaOm was fed up with the dropped calls hence his switch from an iPhone to Tmobile's BlackBerry.

I don't know what to make of this just yet, but the whole Google Voice rejection rumor is starting to piss me off too...

Nokia N97 | Pictures

A little less than a month and a half ago, someone from Vodafone fucked up and mistakingly leaked details about the Nokia N97 Mini. I took a screenshot of what he leaked inside in a public forum, and it was the right thing to do because less than an hour later he deleted his blog post. Other than “competitive pricing,” not much else was revealed … until now.

A tipster has sent Engadget 2 images, and I’ve found a third. Check them out below:

No timing, no pricing, no spec sheet, so don’t ask

iPhone vulnerable to hacker attacks

iPhone

LAS VEGAS - Security experts have uncovered flaws in Apple Inc.'s iPhone that they said hackers can exploit to take control of the popular device, using the tactic for identity theft and other crimes.

IPhone users needed to be warned that their devices were not entirely secure and Apple should try to repair the vulnerability as soon as possible, they said at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, one of the world's top forums for exchanging information on computer security threats.

"It's scary. I don't want people taking over my iPhone," Charlie Miller, a security analyst with consulting firm Independent Security Evaluators, said in an interview.

Miller and Collin Mulliner, a Ph.D. student at the Technical University of Berlin, also discovered a method for hacking the iPhone that lets hackers easily knock a victim's iPhone off a carrier's network.

It prevents users from making calls, accessing the Internet and exchanging text messages, they added.

The two showed how they can disconnect an iPhone from the cellular network by sending it a single, maliciously crafted text message — a message the victim never sees. The messages exploit bugs in the way iPhones handle certain messages and are used to crash parts of the software.

They even said it's possible to remotely control an iPhone by sending 500 messages to a single victim's phone. Those messages contain the necessary commands for the attack and would get executed automatically by exploiting a weakness in the way the iPhone's memory responds to that volume of traffic.

Miller said messaging attacks are so attractive, and are going to become more common, because the underlying technology is a core phone feature that can't be turned off.

"It's such a powerful attack vector," Miller said. "All I need to know is your phone number. As long as their phone's on, I can send this and their phone's going to do something with this. ... It's always on, it's always there, the user doesn't have to do anything — it's the perfect attack vector."

They said the information they presented at Black Hat will give criminals enough information to develop software to break into iPhones within about two weeks.

They said they warned Apple of the flaw in the middle of July, but that the company has yet to fix it.

About 4,000 security professionals were in attendance, including some who are really hackers. While experts ferret out software flaws to fix them and protect users, hackers use the same information to devise pranks or commit crimes.

It is not illegal to disclose ways to hack into computer systems, though it is against the law to use it to break into them.

When asked why they would hand over such information to criminals, they said they felt it was necessary to alert the public that iPhones were just as vulnerable to attack as personal computers.

Apple support docs blame jailbreak for Visual Voicemail failure

Apple support docs blame jailbreak for Visual Voicemail failure

The iPhone Visual Voicemail problems are apparently the fault of iPhone customers. Apple has posted a support document that blames the Visual Voicemail bugs on the iPhone jailbreak. Apple is calling the jailbreak an “unauthorized modification to the iPhone OS” (which it most definitely is), but says that jailbroken iPhones will see disruption of services:

“such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device.”

Perhaps the Visual Voicemail problem wasn’t AT&T’s fault, after all.

But, Apple doesn’t just stop at Visual Voicemail. The iPhone jailbreak is being blamed for iPhone instability, unreliable voice and data services, compromised security, shortened battery life and even preventing future iPhone OS updates.

Apple is really pushing to keep the iPhone protected under the DMCA. Whether or not this just-posted support doc helps their case, that’s another matter altogether.

Samsung Solstice Announced for AT&T

Samsung Solstice Announced for AT&T

Starting August 2nd., AT&T will be selling the Samsung Solstice, a full-touchscreen handset with that all-too-familiar TouchWiz user interface. The A887 comes with a 3″ screen, 2 megapixel camera, dual-band 3G, quad-band EDGE,and a virtual landscape QWERTY keypad. Preloaded software ranges the gamut of Facebook, MySpace and Yahoo widgets to Napster Mobile and the usual AT&T services. It’s not much, but a pretty good deal for $99.99 on a two-year contract - if this is your bag, it should be popping up on the AT&T online store soon, although I’m not sure why anyone would grab this over a refurb iPhone 3G…

Bell on the Cusp of Launching the Palm Pre

For all of the Canadians out there that have been waiting… and waiting… and waiting for the Palm Pre… here’s another great sign that the device will be arriving sooner than later. I just finished reading a post by my bud John over at MobileSyrup, detailing the fact that Bell has started to ramp-up their in-store advertising for the Palm pre. All of the ads features a prominent ‘Coming Soon’ line, however, there is a notable ‘Order yours today’ mention. Awesome. Pre-orders anyone?

Oddly enough, after reading this report, I went back to my usual morning ’surf session’ where I noticed on more than one occasion online ads from Bell with the Pre in-tow. Looks like Bell have topped up the tank of the PR machine and are getting ready to roll.

Still no word on pricing or a hard release date, but still… it’s gotta be soon. Stay tuned for more.

New LG Chocolate Gets Official

The next generation of LG’s Chocolate lineup was spotted two weeks ago has been officially announced for a third quarter release in 54 countries. Although we don’t have any solid information on which countries, nor price point, we’ll certainly take these pictures and drool over the 4″, 800 x 345 “Real VGA” screen in a crazy-long 21:9 aspect ratio. Other reported specs include HSPA, WiFi, GPS, FM transmitter, 355 MB of on-board storage, and a respectable 5 megapixel camera. If you’re hoping to nab one, we heard Verizon and possibly Telus will be picking up this beauty, so keep your eyes peeled.

Unofficial Google Voice client available for the Palm Pre

Unofficial Google Voice client available for the Palm Pre

Palm Pre users can now grab the Google Voice client called dkGoogleVoice for their beloved device. It’s an unofficial app — i.e. not made by Google — but it should do the job just fine. From the UI, you can choose contacts from your address book or dial a number, and call or text them using your Google Voice number. Be aware that it’s still under development and comes with quite a few bugs. Still, if you need it, there’s no reason why not to try it out. Moreover, if you find is useful, you can donate and help developers make it even better. ;)

Samsung R560 heading to MetroPCS?

Samsung R560 heading to MetroPCS?

Don’t quote me on this, but it looks like Samsung’s full QWERTY keyboard-equipped feature phone, R560, is heading to MetroPCS. Apparently, the carrier wants to replace its now outdated R450 Messager with this baby. And how we know this? Well, the device with MetroPCS branding has been spotted at Samsung’s website, though when I checked it later, it wasn’t there.

Specs wise, we’re talking about a tri-band CDMA device with EV-DO 3G connectivity, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, memory card slot and so on. Few carriers in Canada are already offering it as the Samsung Vice…

Motorola Morrisson with T-Mobile 3G is at the FCC house
all in its T-Mobile 3G glory. As we’ve already seen/heard before, it’s the full QWERTY keyboard equipped device with touchscreen, which we hope is of capacitive “kind.” Now, I guess, it’s all about the timing for T-Mobile and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) to go all official with the announcement. We’re waiting…

Orascom to bid for French 3G license?

Orascom Telecom is considering joining one of the consortium which are expected to bid for France’s fourth 3G license. In an interview to French daily Le Figaro, Orascom’s Chairman, Naguib Sawiris said that they are open to all options, acquisitions included.

He said: “Eight million North-Africans live in France and I think it makes sense from an industrial point of view to set foot in the French market.”

Speaking of acquisitions, when asked about prospects of buying Bouygues Telecom, Sawiris said that the company was overvalued, but that Orascom has the financial muscle to absorb the acquisition.

Things around French 3G spectrum auction are certainly heating up, and we’ll make sure to watch closely…

Layers is a great iPhone app for artists

Layers is a neat iPhone app I recently spotted. It allows folks with talent to draw on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Sure, we’ve seen some similar apps in the past, but what makes Layers special is support for, well, layers — just like in Photoshop. Of course, don’t expect the versatility or feature set of the full blown desktop application on your beloved handset, but Layers will give you just enough tools to draw more comfortably while on-the-go.

For those who like to know some background details, Layers was created by a senior in computer engineering at Vanderbilt University - Ben Gotow…

Anyway, that’s about all I wanted to say about Layers. In case you’re wondering how much it costs, the price is 5 bucks ($4.99) and the download link is here (iTunes link).

Microsoft kills Windows Mobile brand, births Windows Phone

Today, we learn that Microsoft is planning on ditching, nay killing, the Windows Mobile brand. What about Windows Mobile 6.5? Windows Mobile 7? Nope, it’ll be known as Windows Phone. The change also applies to past WinMo platforms. From this point forward all Windows Mobile 6.x operating systems will be referred to as Windows Phone.

Rather than stick with a household (at least in the mobile world) name like Windows Mobile, Microsoft wants to distance themselves from all the bad press that the Windows Mobile platform has generated over the years. There’s also talk of “un-boggling” consumers’ minds so that the brand “reflects the upcoming desktop operating system release where people away from their PC can have the same experience everywhere.” Right, now we’re all less confused.

So, to recap. If this report is on point, Windows Mobile is no more. Windows Phone, people. Learn it, love it.

Apple says iPhone jailbreak supports terrorists and drug dealers

Apple has fired another salvo against the iPhone jailbreaking scene with their claim that jailbroken iPhones could be used to attack and disable cell-towers, as well as helping drug dealers avoid getting pinched by the “fuzz.” In the ongoing battle between Apple and iPhone hackers, Apple would have us believe that iPhone hackers could levy “potentially catastrophic” cyber-attacks against wireless networks.

At issue is whether or not consumers have the right to jailbreak their iPhones, or any other mobile phone for that matter. The “jailbreak” refers to a process that frees a cellphone’s file-system, allowing the user to install third-party software that would otherwise be impossible. In the case of the iPhone, the jailbreak essentially hacks the security measures Apple has put in place to protect the iPhone’s operating system. Under the current version of The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998, “no person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” As it stands, the iPhone jailbreak violates the law of the land.

But, there’s hope yet for consumers. The Copyright Office takes requests every three years for exceptions to the DMCA, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation has put in a petition to allow consumers to jailbreak their handsets as they see fit. After all, once the consumer buys the device, it should be theirs to do with as they please.

Apple’s latest filing claims that the jailbreak gives hackers access to the iPhone’s baseband processor (BBP) code, which controls how the iPhone connects to cellular networks. With a little clever hacking, cyber-terrorists could send commands to a cell-tower that could leave it completely useless. Apple claims that allowing the jailbreak exemption to be approved is tantamount to giving hackers the keys that open the doors to cell-tower controls.

And, as if to hammer home the idea that jailbreaking is no good, Apple mentions that the jailbreak also allows an iPhone hacker to alter the handset’s identification number. That would allow the iPhone to make calls anonymously - which “would be desirable to drug dealers.”

Feel like sticking it to the “man” and jailbreaking your iPhone? Check out our iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock guide! (works with iPhone and iPhone 3G as well)

Protect Your Mobile Experience w/ 3M

When I am at a public space, I am always aware of my surroundings especially if I have to key in my login and password to important websites on my smartphone. Usually on a my commute, if I see someone stand over me, I'd rather not sign in to a secure site just incase by chance this person is trying to get a look at my information. If I must, I will try to key in the password first and purposely make a few errors which requires me to erase a couple of key strokes and re-enter just to manage the paranoia. Well, I am happy to see 3M stepping up to the plate and offering a sound solution.

3M's Mobile Privacy Film works just like the desktop privacy filters which protects your information from peeping Toms. From an angle, the information is blurred or blacked out minimizing the chances of your private information being picked up by people next to you. We still recommend mobile users to watch their surroundings and avoid viewing sensitive information if people are within super close proxmity.

3M's Platnium Mirror Film (coming soon) takes it up another notch turning your screen into a mirror like finish when your screen isn't lit. If anything, the ladies probably would like this which doubles as a mirror.

For those just looking for basic LCD protection, 3M also offers a Glossy LCD screen protector for your needs. Both products are available with various handsets with pre-cut sizes or you can purchase a generic sheet and trim to size. Even though the iPhones are known to have pretty strong glass LCD, I still use a screen protector out of habit, just to minimize the chances of scratches. Cost is about $10 for most sizes.

iPhone SMS text message bug puts all iPhones at risk

Security researchers have just stumbled across an iPhone SMS bug that could be used by nefarious pranksters to “quickly take over every iPhone in the world.” The iPhone SMS text message bug was discovered by Charlie Miller and his similarly-named research colleague Collin Mulliner. The iPhone bug, says Miller, exploits flaw in the way the iPhone OS processes SMS text messages. Using the exploit, hackers could send a succession of SMS text messages to an iPhone, allowing them to gain complete control of the handset. Hackers can then commandeer the iPhone to send similar text message strings to other iPhones, spreading like wildfire.

“SMS is an incredible attack vector for mobile phones,” says Miller. “All I need is your phone number. I don’t need you to click a link or anything.”

Miller and Milliner plan to reveal the SMS text message security vulnerability on Thursday at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. The duo say they’ve alerted Apple to the security hole, but the iPhone-maker has yet to release a patch to the iPhone SMS bug. Once announced to the world, the iPhone bug could potentially allow iPhones around the world to be hijacked in a very short time.

Apple, the ball’s in your court.

T-Mobile USA Debuts HTC Touch Pro2 in the U.S.
New Tilting Touchscreen Device Available to T-Mobile Customers in mid-August

Bellevue, Wash. — July 29, 2009 — T-Mobile USA, Inc., and HTC Corp. today announced the upcoming availability of the HTC Touch Pro2™, a powerful, stylish device with an intuitive touch screen and user interface that enables customers to simplify their communication and mobile Internet experience while staying connected, informed and in control of work and life. The device will be available in a mocha finish to T-Mobile customers beginning Aug. 12.

Enabled for T-Mobile’s expanding high-speed 3G network and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), the HTC Touch Pro2 offers fast data delivery and an enhanced Web-browsing experience along with popular features such as built-in GPS and location-based services. Featuring a 3.6-inch color WVGA touchscreen that slides back and tilts up to reveal a full-QWERTY keyboard, the screen is perfectly positioned for reading and creating e-mail, browsing the Web, using applications, and playing videos and games. A 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus also provides customers with an easy way to capture and share high-quality images and video as well as view that content on the crisp display.

The HTC Touch Pro2 also offers an efficient way for customers to manage their daily lives, whether at work or play. A single contact view displays the individual conversation history regardless of whether voice, text or e-mail was used. The HTC Touch Pro2 also includes Straight Talk technology, an integrated e-mail, voice and speakerphone experience that provides a simple way to respond to e-mail via a call, allows organizing conference calls from group e-mail, and makes it easy to turn any location into a conference room. Straight Talk delivers a high-fidelity voice and sound experience enhanced by asymmetric speakers and advanced noise suppression with full-duplex acoustics.

HTC’s latest TouchFLO 3D interface is deeply integrated into a customized version of Windows Mobile 6.1 to deliver maximum consistency throughout Windows Mobile applications and menus. This makes it easy for customers to view, edit and update Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) documents, conveniently access calendars and manage to-do lists. Access to Microsoft Voice Command also simplifies locating contacts in the address book, making phone calls, getting calendar information, playing music and starting programs. The HTC Touch Pro2 is also stereo Bluetooth® capable.

“This summer, many people are balancing summer vacations and time away from the office with the pressures of the workplace,” said Travis Warren, director, product marketing, T-Mobile USA. “We are pleased to announce the HTC Touch Pro2, a uniquely designed device that will help customers manage their day-to-day activities, whether they are in the office or working from an airport, the local playground or the car.”

Guided tour of the HTC Sense UI | Video

The HTC Hero that you see in this video is a great Android smartphone. It’s a great smartphone that can go heads-up with the heaviest hitters - the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre and Touch Diamond2 come to mind. The Hero is endowed with high-end hardware like GPS, 5-megapixel camera, WiFi, 3G data, speedy processor and capacitance touchscreen - which is great. But, the Sense UI really make the handset shine.

Watch in awe as we tour the camera/camcorder app, and marvel in wonderment as we check out such delights as Flash-capable Internet browser. All this and more can be found in the HD video below:

Now Vodafone throws its hat in the ring for the iPhone!

It wasn’t so very long ago that I wrote a post reporting on the supposed attempts of T-Mobile and Orange to secure distribution rights for the iPhone in the UK. The specifics were that they were looking to sell the iPhone 3G, with O2 apparently retaining exclusivity on the 3Gs.

Well now The Guardian Newspaper in the UK is reporting that Vodafone is chasing to become a retail outlet for the iPhone too, which would destroy O2s exclusivity in spectacular fashion, were it ever to happen. Now, Vodafone DOES sell the iPhone in some countries that it has operations, but there are some key ones missing in that set - the UK being one of them.

So could it happen? Well, I think there’s a good argument from Apple (’s perspective to open the distribution of its 3G model, and then perhaps keep the latest (3GS) model back for its exclusive deals - you could see Apple wielding its marketing magic to get this deal in fact. But would it be reasonable for Apple to ditch the exclusivity arrangements that have served it so well, so far? Not in my view, though with speculation being rife now with 3 Operators in the UK, anything could happen! Watch this space, methinks!

Orange partnering with Blyk for Mobile Ads

Reuters is reporting that Orange is going to partner with Blyk in the UK to offer Mobile Ads on a much larger scale.

Interestingly, this means that Blyk will wind down it’s own MVNO-type offering - instead leading to the development of some special tariffs on the Orange network for those willing to receive lots (relatively speaking) of Ads.

Another interesting point is that the approx 200k Blyk subs (they call them members) will not automatically go over to Orange - instead they’ll be able port off wherever they want (and I think as should be the case, to be fair).

For those of you have either been following Blyk, and/or remember older news, Blyk were originally pioneering a largely free subscription for their subs - and were expanding in to quite a number of countries using their MVNO model - it seems that now they will be acting more like a traditional Mobile Ads company, albeit with the scale and understanding that comes with having previously run Mobile Network elements.

O2 Germany expands Mobile Advertising using targeting

According to Cellular News, O2 Germany is going to expand it’s mobile advertising services to do more targeting of Ads, based on anonymous group classification.Things such as gender, age, and interests will be will be used as indices to target the Ads.

As is more and more the case these days, users have to explicitly opt-in to receive the Ads - those that do can expect portal Ads, and SMS/MMS messages containing the same.

Me personally, I’m not an Ad fan - I like a clean user experience no matter what platform I’m using - but if the Ad-serving is twinned with some kind of financial incentive, we could end up seeing more and more of these appearing.

Sprint focuses on pre-paid with acquisition Virgin Mobile for $483 million

Sprint focuses on pre-paid with acquisition Virgin Mobile for $483 million

Sprint focuses on pre-paid with acquisition Virgin Mobile for $483 million
The thing about big-time wireless carriers with nationwide networks is that they’re always looking to become even bigger-time wireless carriers. Sprint (NYSE: S), for example, has just announced that it will be acquiring Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) for the not-so-small sum of $483 million. The deal is part of Sprint’s push to focus on the pre-paid wireless market in the US. The acquisition will have Sprint paying $5.50 per Virgin Mobile USA share.

Sprint plans to bring control of its own pre-paid Boost network under the control of Virgin Mobile USA’s current CEO Dan Schulman. The Boost pre-paid network and Virgin Mobile USA’s own pre-paid user-base are considered complementary, and will continue to operate in parallel. The deal will cancel out $248 million in outstanding debt on VM USA’s books, and will boost Sprint’s wireless ranks by some 5.2 million customers. That’s not enough to make the No. 3 US wireless carrier any more of a threat to AT&T (NYSE: T) or Verizon Wireless, but it sure does make Sprint a good deal bigger than T-Mobile USA.

Of course, as with all deals of this size and nature, Sprint will have to wait for feds and regulators to sign off on the deal. As it stands, this fall or early 2010 is looking like a good bet for regulatory approval of the acquisition.

Video: Nokia USA advocating the purchase of unlocked devices; teaches Americans what a SIM card is
I just had to grab a jacket because it got cold all of a sudden in the layer of hell that I currently call home. Nokia USA has created a video that actually advocates bypassing your operator, buying an unlocked devices, and just swapping your current SIM card inside your new mobile. I’ve been wanting to see a video like this since I started writing my personal blog, Ring Nokia, back in 2006. Now that it has finally happened, I’m a bit speechless. It’s magical, it’s surreal, I want to see this being blasted on televisions, put in the center of NokiaUSA.com and read every single USA based technology journalist ranting about the positives and negatives when it comes to owning an unlocked device. The one company that could have pushed this unlocked mentality, and made the American mobile market a little bit more like Europe and Asia, was Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). We all saw how royally they fucked that one up, making a device locked to an operator that everyone hates. You want to know why Nokia has so much trouble getting their devices into the North American market? Videos like this that basically say: “Your operator is a pipe. Pay them for service, buy the device from us, be happy.”

Orange Giving Away Free HTC Hero on Twitter

Fire up your quills, wordsmiths, Orange UK’s social networking guy, Conor Maples, is running a contest for followers to win an HTC Hero. All you have to do is write a poem about Orange and Android to enter. The catch? It’s on Twitter, so you’ve got 140 characters to work with. Maybe a haiku might be the way to go… The contest runs until the end of the week, at which point we will have to rely on Conor’s good literary taste to pick a winner. RIM Releases New Web Development Tools

New plug-ins for the Eclipse and Visual Studio development environments have been announced that will help application makers get started with web apps for BlackBerry . RIM’s latest push to support web apps was made at the last BlackBerry Developer Conference, so there has been sufficient time to get dev feedback and polish the tools. With these plugins, hopefully we’ll see some rich web-powered apps that won’t hinge on limited device-side resources, but let’s give developers some time to make something. Deal of the Day The $99 Palm Pre from Best Buy

Deal of the Day The $99 Palm Pre from Best Buy

Deal of the Day: The $99 Palm Pre from Best Buy
Yesterday, Phil over at PreThinking reported that some incorrect pricing was going on over at Best Buy. It seemed as though the Palm Pre was tagged for $99.99 in-store. All I could think to myself upon reading this was ‘this has got to be an error… someone is getting fired’. And sure enough, today comes confirmation of just that. An error was indeed made, and pricing is back up to the $199.99 price point (no details or news on anyone getting fired though :P ).

Now, don’t let me lead you to believe some folks didn’t take advantage. Multiple reports have come in noted a successful purchase of the Pre for $99. Even wackier, a few reports have come in that Best Buy refunded $100 back to early adopters that purchased the device for the full $199. Craziness.

My advice? Pop by your local Best Buy location and give things a look-see. You never know, some stores may still have the incorrect pricing. Highly doubtful, but worth a shot.

Samsung working on a Tegra-based smartphone?

It seems has found a powerful ally for its promising Tegra processor. Samsung confirmed that it’s on board, and considering the reach of the Korean giant, this could prove as a big win for NVIDIA, which is a new entrant to this space. No additional details were given, but we think Samsung will certainly try to add some TouchWIZ love on the future Tegra-powered smartphone, along with AMOLED screen, while some of the three mobile platforms the company supports — Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile – will sit bellow the UI. We’re certainly looking forward to see what NVIDIA’s baby can bring to the ever demanding smartphone market…

Bell and Virgin Mobile up in Canada are all set to launch the Samsung Link in the very near future. Last I heard, Bell was set to launch the Link on July 30th… No details have been available on a Virgin Mobile launch… until now. A live link has appeared on the Virgin Mobile website, showing off the new Samsung Link in a bold blue color.

With a live page up-and-running, one can only speculate the device will be launched in the near future… probably the 30th as well. No details on pricing yet, but stay tuned for more on the Bell (and Virgin Mobile) Samsung Link.

myTouch 3G Tracking Numbers Are Comin’ Out
If you were one of the proud T-Mobile customers that pre-ordered a myTouch 3G, I’ve got some good news for you this morning. Word has it that tracking numbers are on the way via text message. Now, don’t get TOO excited as the tracking numbers themselves aren’t recognized by UPS just yet, but the fact that folks are starting to receive them would lead us to believe the devices are all packed up and ready to go. They’ll no doubt be available to track within UPS’ systems real soon.

Did you pre-order a myTouch 3G? Have you received your tracking text yet?

Last I heard deliveries of the myTouch 3G were slated for August 5th at the latest. This is the same date the new Android-powered device is slated to go on sale to the general public as well.

Vodafone mulling T-Mobile bid

Tune Up Utilities

Vodafone mulling T-Mobile bid
In a story picked up on by numerous weekend papers, and also MobileToday.co.uk, it would appear that Vodafone (and perhaps others) are mulling over a bid for T-Mobile

As you might or might not know, the UK Mobile Operator market is a rather packed one, with O2 , Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3 as the infrastructure-owning Operators, then a bunch of MVNOs running services too!

Vodafone’s CEO, Vittorio Colao, was quoted as saying that consolidation of the MNO situation in the UK wouldn’t be a bad thing - and of course adding a number of millions of subs to the successful bidder wouldn’t do that Operator any harm either!

The current situation in the UK means we have a three-tier Operator classification in terms of sub - two big(ger) players in the form of O2 and Vodafone, with approaching 20m subs each, and then another tier with T-Mobile and Orange on it (with a third tier occupied by the smaller 3) - that makes T-Mobile, Orange, and 3 themselves all viable targets - but of course, which ones represents the best value? Well that would entirely depend on the profitability of the user base, and I’d imagine, the network fit with the topology of cell sites, between the purchaser, and er… purchasee! :-)

On a more serious note though, I think we can expect to see signs of a purchase, and maybe even a rushed completion, within the next 12-24 months. As for the target(s), I say T-Mobile and 3.
