Donations...

A couple of people asked for a donate button of some sort. I hesitate because of the sudden complexity of things when money is involved. Here is what I think would be best:

  • Donate your time and skills if you can rather than money.
  • If you cannot do so, please consider sponsoring something we could directly use: Such as a USB serial cable (about $45 for parts from Sparkfun), or perhaps upgrading the Slicehost slice we're borrowing from pumpkin ($60 per month, though it would only be useful if we could get enough money for at least six months), used or broken devices for testing, etc. Or something like a pizza for one of our contributors on a late night hacking binge (we will distribute food donations on a round-robin basis =P)
  • My paypal address is my gmail e-mail address (planetbeing). If you do make a donation, please specify exactly what it is for. A gigantic slush fund is something that I wish to avoid.
For the record, contrary to what was published by some media sources, the iphonelinux group is not associated with the group commonly known as the "iPhone Dev Team". I'm a member of the Dev Team, and other members sometimes lends assistance or advice, but this is an entirely separate project. The Dev Team does not accept any donations whereas this project tentatively will.

Updating and uninstalling openiboot

It's actually slightly problematic to use the "Update Firmware" feature of iTunes with openiboot installed, so I updated openiboot with an uninstall facility.

I uploaded the binaries and instructions necessary to update openiboot (and then uninstall it if you wish) to: http://www.iphone-dev.org/planetbeing/openiboot-uninstall.tar.gz

Sony PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I've lined up a group of friends to go online and play with Resistance 2; absolutely amazing game. However, with 4 to 5 friends at once, I had a hard time strategizing with them with just one or two mobile phones. So on Thursday night (night of Thanksgiving), I placed an order on Amazon for a SOCOM: Confrontation bundle which includes the official Sony PS3 headset (game itself is $39, Bundle package is $59, Headset itself would have been $49 alone). Overall, for $59, I got a game and a Sony official headset which has been receiving positive reviews.

Today, Saturday, less than 48 hours later, Amazon shipped out the package and I actually received it! Needless to say, I was stoked. The package in the game doesn't have any instructions to the headset. After researching online, I found an archive of the Sony Gaming Manuals here and the Bluetooth Headset instructions are here.

This thing is so easy to use, simply plug the actual mini-USB cable to the headset itself (top of headset, not the cradle) and it will auto pair with your PS3. When connected to Cradle, it works as a USB Mic (just by turning it on). I am asking friends to hookup their own bluetooth headsets now to take our gaming to a new level.

iPhone Flip? Say No to Knock Offs!

We’ve seen our share of iPhone knock offs but this one gets a top 3 entry. It’s a flip iPhone and it was conceived in China. If you were to chose, what would you prefer? The regular candybarish iPhone or the flip iPhone? As for specs, this knock off will get you a 3 megapixel camera, a 2.6 inch display and a resolution of 240 x 320. It’s pretty small at 105 x 53 x 17mm and in weighs about 110

The 5800 XpressMusic from Nokia Is Coming

Try as one might to describe the 5800, sooner or later, it becomes clear that the specially designed music features can no longer be denied or regarded as useless, even by those who would never even think about purchasing this device. Just to help you get the general idea, the XpressMusic comes with 8GB of memory for thousands of tracks, a graphics equalizer, a 3.5 mm jack, built-in stereo

The iPhone Now Offers TV-Out Performances

Only a couple of days ago, iPhone developer Erica Sadun managed to get the hang of these TV-out performances, and also made useful observations for all users interested. As you will come to realize from the following paragraphs, these TV exporting capabilities come with some, probably undesirable catches, and make the usage pretty complicated, at least for now.To get started, we must first point

Google acknowledges skirting App Store rules

It seems Google has confirmed the notion that Google Mobile uses APIs that are undocumented, opening up the ability to use the built-in proximity sensor in the iPhone for verbal searches. This goes against the iPhone SDK, which states developers can only use APIs that Apple published within the kit.Google was quick to dismiss more serious claims that they were linking to dynamic frameworks,

Tell if someone is lying with Lie Detector

The iPhone has had a lot of odd applications in the past, but apparently we haven’t seen them all. The newest one to fall into our lap is the Lie Detector application by John Freeman. Now you can get answers on the fly with little notice. The Lie Detector claims that it can tell when a person is lying but it seems to be more of a guessing game. Your chances of getting the right answer really are

Apple Not Happy With Google iPhone App

We should all be familiar with Apple’s style by now; they want things done their way, and no other way. So when they don’t approve of using undocumented API calls with iPhone apps, they mean it and the fact that Google’s app uses them surely can’t sit well with Apple. There is a reason that they don’t support these undocumented features, as Apple can’t guarantee the firmware updates won’t break

Linux on the iPhone!

I'm pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones as well as the first generation iPod touch. This is a rough first draft of the port, and many drivers are still missing, but it's enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.

What we have:

- Framebuffer driver
- Serial driver
- Serial over USB driver
- Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc.

What we have in openiboot (but hasn't been ported yet):

- Read-only support for the NAND

What we don't have (yet!):

- Write support for the NAND
- Wireless networking
- Touchscreen
- Sound
- Accelerometer
- Baseband support

The current userland we're using, in the interest of expedience, is a Busybox installation created with buildroot, but glibc works fine as well, and we're going to build a more permanent userland solution.

A demonstration video can be seen here: http://www.vimeo.com/2373142

Instructions here: http://www.iphone-dev.org/planetbeing/LINUX-README.txt

Download here: http://91.186.26.18/iphone/files/iphonelinux-demo.tar.gz (look for mirrors in the comments)

EDIT: The instructions are missing the step that you have to select openiboot console from the menu before performing the "sudo ./oibc" step. Just be aware you have to do that if it seems like you're not getting a response from the oibc client.

EDIT: I was asked a couple times by people who wanted to donate (financially) to the project. I made a post discussing this possibility, if you are interested.

Mobile Phones and Fringe Coverage

Mobile Phones and Fringe Coverage.I have this habit with mobile phones and cell coverage that when I see something that interests me, even if I am holiday, I have to see what I can find out about it there and then. Whilst on holiday in Cornwall I noticed the area I was staying had fringe coverage. I thought this was strange as I would have expected to find the Cornish village of Mousehole to have

PS3 Hookup to LCD Monitors

A friend of mine is getting a PS3 pretty soon. His problem, however, is that he has an older tube television which will be crappy to play his console with (at best 480 output). Until he decides to buy a new television, he asked if he can just hook it up to his 20" Dell LCD Monitors that accepts DVI input.

I did some research and believe this can be done. Here is what I proposed:

For the VIDEO Portion
1. Make sure your Dell Monitor is HDCP complaint (most late models are)
2. Buy an HDMI to DVI cable (this provides the video portion of the feed). Connect HDMI end to back of PS3 and DVI end to back of monitor. You'll have to play with PS3 output setting to figure out if it does 1080i or 1080p or whatever
Note: From my understanding, HDMI and DVI are similar in standard, HDMI offers the audio channel otherwise.
For the AUDIO Portion
3. Use the PS3 proprietary cables that come with the system w/ the Yellow-White-Red output and connect to back of PS3 where it belongs
4. Go to Radioshack and buy a cheap RCA to 1/8 Mini Stereo (must have 2 black rings for stereo) adaptor. Like this one.
5. Just plug the Red and White (audio feed) end of the PS3 proprietary RCA cable into the adaptor and plug this adaptor into any computer speakers and you should be set.

PWNAGE 2.2.1 Out, Simple Mode Bug Fixed

After my saga last night testing both PWNAGE 2.2 and QuickPWN 2.2, the amazing iPhone Dev Team released the new PWNAGE tool 2.2.1 and have now fixed the issue with building a custom .ipsw file. Apparently, the error was because it was only meant for iPod Touch. Dev team orginally asked us to go through EXPERT MODE instead of SIMPLE MODE but instead, they released the 2.2.1 version.

I downloaded the latest release and was successful in building a custom firmware. I am going to run it on my iPhone first generation because I noticed some bugs here and there where the Insomnia app gets turned off on its own.

PWNAGE 2.2 Tool for iPhone Firmware 2.2 Available!

Yup, these guys are super awesome, within a day of iPhone's 2.2 firmware release, they have disclosed full instructions here. Pretty Amazing.

Update 1: I am trying to build a custom .ipsw firmware using Pwnage 2.2 but it is not working. I am prompted "I haz failed" shortly after entering my system password. The iPhone of choice is one of my first gen iPhone which has been pwn'd via firmware 2.1. According to the iPhone Dev team, the official instruction is to just restore to 2.2 via iTunes then run QuickPwn (which if you remember my previous story, it worked partially, I ended up option-restored a custom 2.1 .ipsw firmware back on the iPhone to work completely). So far, I can't figure out why along with many people commented on iPhone dev team's blog that PWNAGE 2.2 won't build a 1st gen firmware, I am guessing Pwnage 2.2 is developed for 2nd gen (3G iPhone) only. I am tempted to just restore up to 2.2 and run QuickPwn to find out. Will update shortly.

Update 2: Interesting... I used iTunes to upgrade my Pwn'd 2.1 iPhone to the latest 2.2. Once the phone has been setup, it automatically recognized everything via iTunes (hence restored my contacts, calendar, mail, music, etc...). It didn't get locked again. The 2.2 upgrade must have only been an update to the OS/Application side, not the baseband phone/internet portion as mentioned by iPhone Dev team. QuickPwn will still be required to go in and get Cydia and Installer back on for all 3rd party applications. Since the problem with iPhone won't wake up after deep sleep still exist, I have to get "Insomnia" back on again. (I only did this update for that reason, but since the baseband wasn't upgrade, problem is still there). Atleast I get Google StreetView now :) Will update after QuickPwn.

Update 3: I haz success! That is what I got after few DFU reboot (remember the DFU boot trick? this time, I released power button around 6 seconds on screen) and got QuickPwn to do its thing! iPhone dev team definitely put in more efforts in this build the animation on the iPhone screen during QuickPwn installation is pretty cool. Nokia 5800 a real copycat of apple i-phone

if you have read my previous posts, i have posted many i-phone copycat phones. but most of them are samsung or LG phones. but now nokia is in this list because of this phone.
For the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of Nokia's most widely talked about (and leaked) phones of recent memory. There's no doubt that it is going to garner attention, coming in the wake of the recent spate of touch phones, including, of course, the Apple iPhone. While it's not Nokia's first touch phone (Nokia 7700/7110) or its first recent touch device (Nokia N810), it is the first S60 touch enabled phone and is a significant landmark in Nokia's mobile device story. However, it is worth noting from the start that it is not "Nokia's touch phone", instead it is the first in a portfolio of touch enabled phones from Nokia. This is an important distinction because, while the 5800 can tell us much about Nokia's touch platform generally, it can only be fairly assessed in the context of its own market positioning (music focused, cost of 279 Euro before taxes and subsidies).

Samsung S7330 Soul junior the new smart phone

The samsung Soul is a famous phone. But samsung has announced this phone as Soul junior. I don’t know what the similarity is because this phone is not similar to old samsung Soul. Any how this is a great phone and it has unusual loock.
The latest incarnation - Samsung S7330 - packs in stylish exterior, well-rounded feature set and a moderate price tag. And what sounds like a good recipe already is spiced up by the yet exotic touchpad. No news so far, but knowing what to expect can actually turn hard on the S7330. Users will feel entitled to more than passable performance, so let's see if it delivers.
The S7330 may as well be noteworthy for marking a shift in the Samsung naming patterns. It is the first model by the South Korean manufacturer with a four-digit model designation (the rugged B2700, M3510 Beat and 8510 INNOV8 follow suit).
Samsung S7330 is clearly in for quite a challenge. The price tag will be decisive here, and we can't ignore the fact that at 300 US dollars price point users can go for a juicier spec sheet.
Anyway, it's more than obvious that the slick Soul exterior is a strong enough selling point. We're back exploring it after the jump.

All features

• 3G with HSDPA support
• Quad-band GSM support, usable worldwide
• Touchpad navigation

iPhone's Phone Function Not Up to Par?

Yesterday, while waiting for an appointment, I overheard a conversation from a lady telling a complete stranger her feedback on her iPhone 3G. She said she loves every aspects of the iPhone besides the actual phone. She "recommended" that total stranger to wait until the next generation when Apple gets the phone straightened out.

A few thoughts came to my mind after hearing this. First, most people do not realize that a smartphone is really a small computer. For every function to work, it must be written as an application, hence a "phone" application or "email" application, etc. The only difference or challenge, is to include a baseband software so the device is always keeping the phone application running with minimal power-draw while it anticipates calls, SMS or VM alerts.

That said, if there is a complaint against the phone application, most of the functionality can be improved or enhanced over time via software or OS updates (unless of course, if you have a complaint against hardware for example: loudspeaker is not loud enough or the voice quality is always choppy because of a bad phone modem or poorly located internal antenna).

In all fairness, I feel the Phone application in the iPhone is pretty well written; I distinctly remember coming from a Windows-Mobile 6.0 device and the usability was night and day. Overall, iPhones onscreen GUI is large, well thoughout and responsive. Its easy to dial or browse using your finger tip whereas my previous smartphones like my AT&T 8525 or Treo 680 pretty much required a stylus to provide precise input on the touchscreen. Although when compared to my Nokia N95-3, I must say that the Nokia is a step above in terms of its phone application. Of course, having a numeric keypad helps and having louder volume and dedicated phone/end key just gives you that much more functionality as a phone.

As for me, I am not a big talker on the phone. My rollover minutes are always racking up in thousands. For the small amount of phone calls I make, I find the iPhone tolerable. Its ability to aggregate and make good use of the meager EDGE or 3G data pipeline over other powerful applications is what impresses me. So, I guess no complaints here.

Poorlad's menu implemented; Porting issues resolved

Yesterday night, I merged in a branch I was working on for poorlad's menu. A version of that beautiful menu is now in Git. His menu included a version string at the bottom. We didn't have any way to keep track of versions and builds before, so this was actually a good idea that I had to implement. Because I didn't want to implement support for non-fixed width fonts, or add another space-consuming font, I just used the console font I was already using for that part. I also had to brighten the gradient on the bottom of the screen, since it was basically invisible due to gamma issues otherwise.

The border between the gradient and the "black" is clearly visible on my device. This is probably because of a gamma issue. When poorlad comes back, we can ask him to calibrate it more.

Otherwise, it looks pretty good! In order to make this possible, I added in stb_images.c, a great tiny little image library that can read PNG, JPEGs and even PSD files and does zlib decompression as an added bonus. This will be a great help if we decide to change things or need to add more stuff that consumes a lot of space. I also added in a basic function to perform alpha blending (albeit comparatively slowly).

Sadly, while I was busy making these changes, ius from IRC actually begun to implement poorlad's menu without me knowing about it, so we ened up duplicating each other's efforts. He was able to compile in zlib and libpng, but the cost was to inflate the final binary to 347 KB. Whereas taking out the old menu images, and adding small, compressed PNGs and the stb_images library instead actually made openiboot smaller than it was before! His decision to preblend the images, rather than attempt alpha blending on the device, was probably more optimal from a performance perspective.

Steven Troughton-Smith told me on Twitter that he has actually implemented his own boot menu as well. I'm not sure if he used the new PNG code or not, but the new code makes it pretty easy for a competent programmer to add in whatever menu they would like. I'd tell everyone to skin away, but we should keep as few wild branches of this project as possible, since everyone randomly installing openiboot just for kicks (especially a modified version) and then coming to us (read: me, ultimately) for support is something we don't have the resources to handle at this moment.

On the porting side, the issues with installation, optimizing NOR access on iPhone 3G, NAND access on a few devices all seem to have been fixed, so we can basically scratch the first two items off of the list I put up in the last post. I'm pleasantly surprised at how relatively easy it was.

Anyway, now for the kernel. Well, if I don't get distracted by writing to NAND.

New operamini 4.2 free mobile web browser

now lets lockat this new version.
the main disadvantage in opera mini was, you cant watch streaming videos like youtube in previous versions. but the new beta version allows you this feature.
also file downloading feature has improved in new opera mini.
you can customize the skin in this new operamini version.also it allows you to synchronize your notes

Porting to iPhone 3G and iPod touch

Hey guys,

The lack of updates for the past few days is because many of you decided to visit us in IRC, thus enabling work to be done on porting openiboot to the iPod touch and the iPhone 3G (in particular because I don't have an iPod touch at the moment).

I'm pleased to report that everything now seems to be working on the iPhone 2G and the iPhone 3G (albeit NOR read/write on the iPhone 3G is unoptimized and is unacceptably slow). There is apparently an outstanding issue with the NAND ECC on some (?) iPod touchs, and also some people can't seem to actually install openiboot to NOR on both iPhone 2G and iPod touch. Unfortunately, the problem is that these things happen on devices that I don't have physical access to, and IRC is often a frustrating medium for communicating with testers. I'm confident these issues will be resolved soon, though.

So, current simultaneous projects:

1. Resolve openiboot porting issues
2. Implement poorlad's boot menu
3. Work on write support for FTL

After at least one of those things are done, we'll be working on the Linux kernel.

NAND filesystem now readable!

Amazingly enough, the FTL_Read stuff from last night was pretty much correct! After that, it was relatively trivial to port over the HFS+ code I've already written (which was in pure C... finally that [fail] design decision has been vindicated =P).

As you can see in the screenshot below, with the latest Git revision, you can browse the filesystem from openiboot!

Next on the list is to port openiboot over to the iPod touch and iPhone 3G. It's probably just a matter of putting in different numbers for the GPIO ports, but we'll see.

After that, I will implement poorlad's bootmenu (which everyone seems to like).

After that, well... We have pretty much all the devices now, so we'll start looking at the Linux kernel. If you're a Linux kernel guy who would be willing to help (preferrably you have experience porting Linux to new ARM platforms), please leave a comment here. I can do most of the muscle work, but it'd be nice if someone can show me how to set up the source tree properly for the new port.

LG KF700 with touch of slide and touch of scroll

If you have seen LG viewty phone, you may feel this is very similar to viewty. But there is a small difference. Instead of viewty’s touch screen KF700 has both touch screen and scroll.
The LG KF700 (codenamed Virgo) is among the latest LG full touch handsets. Besides being one of the most affordable one among those, it stands out with multiple control-and-navigation methods. LG KF700 puts together a 3" touchscreen display, a slide-out standard keypad and a side mounted scroll wheel with an adjacent OK key. The neat and solid KF700 blends together elegance and great web surfing to broaden its appeal beyond the fashion-savvy.
LG KF700 has a remarkably responsive user interface, fashionable looks and strives to deliver most of the multimedia applications you might want in a mobile phone. The three input methods are diverse enough for you to find your preference. However, all the three types are rather fused - the only one you could go without is the scroll wheel. The touchscreen display does the job for most tasks, but you need the keypad to enter text. The keypad is useless on its own too, because it has no D-pad. So in the end, you are bound to use at least two of the input methods described.
LG KF700 is currently selling at about 230 euro (or 340 US dollars), which basically is a really competitive price - you would be hard pressed to find a sleek touch phone for less, unless of course you go for an at least year-old UIQ or Windows Mobile device.
